[Warning] Nimrod In Town

I own both systems and their both pretty good.
PSP is a great little gem. It's main feature, the games, can be pushed to limits we could have never thought possible in handhelds 15, 10, hell, maybe even 5 years ago. This has PS1.75 quality graphics, meaning it's close to PS2, but not quite. To say the games aren't graphically stunning would either take a lie or someone with Terminal Nintendo Fanboy Syndrome. However it is a realitivly new system, and the developers don't know how to push it to it's limits. The library isn't big, but come november there should be tons of games coming out just in time for the christmas rush (surprise surprise).
The other features, depending on how much you like them, will be used sporatically. The 2.0's web browser is handy for on the go net surfing, if you can get a decent wireless signal. The picture storing is good if you want to look at pr0n at any given moment, or, even more useful and less perverted, storing some webcomics and reading them at any time. The movies that are coming out for it are steaming piles of crap save some 5 titles. The real gem is the .mp3 player, provided you get a big enough memory card.
The disadvatages are nobody quite knows how to make some good games for this yet. Battery life is short, and the REAL killer... the price. Once you get a decent memory card and a game, it'll run you up $500+. If you want it, find some way for other poor saps to give it to you for free, like I did.
The DS is really only ment for games, though it has something really pathetic added to it... pictochat. It gets crap distance (only 30 feet), but you didnt buy a DS for pictochat... at least I hope not. You bought it for it's innovative touch screen, and the games that use and abuse that screen.
In short, the games are pretty fun. Most will end up using either one of the two screens as a map (I.E. Kirby Canvas Course and Mario 64 DS). There are some real addictive games out there, like Wario Ware: TOUCHED! and Kirby Canvas Course, but there is one drawback. The games aren't nearly as pretty as the PSP. While they are capable of 3-D, most stick to the tired and true sprites that nintendo's handhelds are clinging onto for some reason.
If there's anoter drawback, it's the games are TEENIE TINY. Itty bitty. Easy to lose. Nintendo must not be compensating at ALL, because everything is getting progressivly smaller, unlike the competion (lol xbox is hueg!!1).
Really, I'd recomend either system to anyone, but PSP is worth the $300 because of all it's handy features (I use the .mp3 feature CONSANTLY), but since other things will run the price up, DS is fine for the middle class gamers. It's all up to you, but people, get them both. Show that you care.
Edit: If i have typos, sorry.
