I'll kick off with some bands I really like but are not really well-known.
Meat Puppets
A punkband that has made a classic folkalbum back in 1983. Meat Puppets II has kept me listening to them for weeks now. It contains songs that have been covered by Kurt Cobain on MTV Unplugged. (Oh me, Plateau and Lake Of Fire). The album takes a little time to get into, but it gets you it'll never go away.
Their myspace (which only has one song of Meat Puppets II.. and it's not a folk song):

I can't really find some good versions of their songs on Youtube, but here's a link to the torrent file: http://zerotracker.com/download/HTTP/27029/Meat%20Puppets-II%28Darkside_RG%29.torrent
Built To Spill
I have no idea why no-one else posted a thread on Built To Spill yet. Okay, they're fairly underground.. but damn they're good. Their last album, You In Reverse, has been a real eye-opener to me. "Oh, it's indie-rock... this cd will probably be repetitive and boring." Well, the contrary was true. What an astonishing album. Crazy guitar-hooks, catchy melodies and a great voice make this album superior to any indie-rock album I've heard so far. The songs have so much flow.
As of yet I haven't found the time to listen to some more of their albums. But in the near future this will change.
Built To Spill's live stuff is insane as well. Many songs feature long improvisation jams. I happened to catch a cover of Neil Young's Cortez The Killer. Over 20 minutes long, with 13 minutes of guitar solo. Really impressive and as good as or better than the original.
Their official site has the 3 best songs of You In Reverse in the playlist

Porcupine Tree
I've heard some people talk about Porcupine Tree before, but there's never been a thread dedicated to them. They're probably the best that progressive rock has to offer in the last 10 years. The main group of fans think their latter stuff is the best but I think the their earlier albums are a lot better. The album Stupid Dream is in my opinion the best album they've made to this day. It has some similarities to the Bends by Radiohead. It's a very smooth album with catchy guitars, decent vocals and songs that stick into your head.
Their latest album has been released May this year. But I can't say I like it... it's too complex. Earlier albums were easier on the ear. You really have to concentrate and cannot just listen away.
Link to their myspace (only has songs of the later albums):

Discuss. Or post some other random artists you think could use some more publicity.
(I'll post some more soon)
