View Full Version : The Weakerthans

I had to make a thread about them because they are one of my favourite bands ever (in the top four, precisely), and they've finally released a new album after four years and I'm very excited about it. Indie-folk-punk-country-rock-pop. Mellow. Rockin'. Happy. Soothing. Extremely well-written lyrics. Here are a few songs from their new album, Reunion Tour. They only get better after a few listens.
Relative Surplus Value
Virtute the Cat Explains her Departure
Sun in an Empty Room
Oh, and for all of you You Tube fans, I've also included a silly video:

I picked this up at HMV when it came out; quality tunes

Thanks for the heads up, these songs are pretty good! It's interesting to note that "surplus value" (if you don't already know this, I don't know) is the marxist term for profit. I could go into a longer explanation but it would be boring. That's also my favorite song out of these, although Night Window and the cat song are nice.

Yay, I'm glad you listened Per! I was getting discouraged.
And the singer/lyricist in the band definitely has his political opinions, but is generally not very preachy about it, so that's good.
I just came back from seeing the band. SOOOOOO good. I've been going around all week telling people that it was going to be the "greatest concert ever," and honestly, I may have not have been too far off the mark. Have you ever seen a singer that smiled the entire time he performed, even WHILE singing? Well, that's what this guy does. And the band totally rocks the fuck out, despite the relative overall mellowness of the songs.
Anyway, they are doing a big tour through North America and Europe. If you take my recommendation on anything, it's that you would not be disappointed by going to a show.
Also, download these songs!

I listened to the songs and liked them, but why not upload the whole album?

I have had this album since before it was supposed to come out (I know, tru punx), but I haven't listened to it yet. I will do so right now.

I don't know Jake... the thought never even crossed my mind. I suspect it would be more intimidating for someone to have to download a whole album and listen to it than listen to a few songs.
I've checked the band out on your recommendation before and remember thinking they were pleasant enough but not anything I'd listen to frequently. Is their new album much different from their other stuff? I might give them another shot.

Bump because I am an addict.
I think Left And Leaving is my favorite album of theirs, but I also really like everything else they've done. Gah, it's so good.

Left and Leaving to a while to grow on me, actually. I thought that they could have spaced out the faster songs and the slower songs better throughout the album.
Personally, I like Reconstruction Site the best. I remember when I first got it, it didn't leave my Cd player for weeks--although, really, I don't think this band can do anything wrong.

I downloaded a bunch of their stuff a while ago, I like. But like nieh said, nothing I would listen to frequentley. Though I really do like "Reconstruction Site."

Bump because they're touring in the United States again (http://theweakerthans.org/concerts/)!
Also, they've become my all-time favorite band since this thread made me check them out. I'm so excited for when they come to DC in September!
Btw, here's the album that Betty posted a few songs from!
