Ash was put in a coma after Pikachu used Thunderbolt on the Spearow
As his mind became more and more detached from the world, his "world" became more and more surreal, hence why there are no real animals (yet, they are known to exist in the Pokemon world)
Team Rocket started off as a threat, but became more of a comic relief after he was put on painkillers in the hospital
Since Ash has daddy issues, he placed his father (Giovanni) at the head of an evil organization
Being in a coma, he'll never be with a girl, which is why he and Misty have never hooked up. Similarly, Brock is constantly rejected because, being an extension of Ash's repressed hormones, which will never be fulfilled
Jessie represents his vanity, James represents his suppressed homosexuality, Meowth represents the possibility of rehabilitation since he doesn't really want to be evil. He can also talk, an attempt at humanizing him by Ash
Gary Oak and Richie, who have become successful Pokemon trainers (and in Gary's case, settled down), are methods of keeping Ash in check with reality so that he isn't the only person to become a great trainer
Tracey represents Ash's pre-Pokemon desire of becoming an artist
Ash's Pokemon also represent different aspects of his personality. Bulbasaur - stubbornness, Charizard - sexuality (starts small and innocent, becomes large and uncontrollable), Squirtle - leadership, Pidgeotto - recklessness (this applies to his other bird Pokemon as well), Butterfree - loneliness, Pikachu - humanity (which is why Team Rocket, his dark side, is after it, and also why he can't evolve it)
If the Elite Four, the most major roadblock on his "journey," are defeated and Ash becomes a Pokemon master, he'll presumably break out of the coma
there's a lot more, but yeah
