Bryan Keith Holland
6' 2" (1.88 m)
One of the greatest punk vocalists in rock history, Bryan Keith Holland was born two days before the end of 1965 in Orange County, California to a father who was a hospital-administrator and a mother who was a school teacher. He is the third of four children of his family. Holland has cited bands/artists such as Aerosmith, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, KISS, Bob Marley, Queen, The Rolling Stones, UFO (with Michael Schenker) and Van Halen, among others, as his early influences.
By the time he was in high school, he got turned on to punk music by listening to the Adolescents, Agent Orange, Bad Brains, Bad Religion, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, The Clash, Descendents, Ramones, The Sex Pistols, Social Distortion, T.S.O.L. and The Vandals. This was when he came up with an idea of starting a band and it wasn't until he formed "Manic Subsidal" in 1984 along with fellow band mate 'Greg K.' and later changed their name to "The Offspring" in 1985 after they found Noodles as their second guitarist.
After spending a few years on the local scene, his band released finally released its first album, simply titled "The Offspring", in 1989, which had been released in limited amounts only in a 12" Vinyl format and a CD release for the album wouldn't occur until 1995. Two years later, The Offspring were signed signed to Epitaph Records in 1991 and their second album "Ignition" came out in 1992. Their next album, "Smash" (1994), finally brought The Offspring into the mainstream success, containing hit singles as "Come Out and Play" and "Self-Esteem". The Offspring then released a number of more albums ("Ixnay on the Hombre" in 1997, "Americana" in 1998, "Conspiracy of One" in 2000 and "Splinter" in 2003) and his band has been very successful ever since.

Tenderhearted and sympathetic to an unusual degree, Dexter Holland has an understanding of other people's feelings and needs which borders on telepathy. Dexter Holland is extremely compassionate and cannot bear to see any fellow creature - human or animal - suffer. Because of his kindness and nonjudgmental attitude, people suffering from pain or confusion are drawn to Holland for help, which he readily gives. Sometimes Holland's soft-heartedness is taken advantage of.
He is a gentle, poetic soul and has a great love and affinity for music. Because many of his feelings are vague and he cannot easily verbalize how he experiences life, music seems a natural language for Holland. He is also extremely romantic and often "in love with love".
His own feelings and emotions are something of an enigma to Dexter, and it is often difficult for him to share with others what he is feeling.
Dexter Holland frequently withdraws from contact with the world, and needs a healing, peaceful environment in order to blossom and come out of his.
Holland identifies with the oppressed, disenfranchised or underdog in any situation and he wants to help them or care for them in some way.
Dexter Holland has a buoyant, cheerful disposition and he reaches out to others in a warm, open and friendly way. His emotional generosity and lack of pettiness is well known among his circle of friends, and people often seek Dexter out for help, sympathy or advice. Dexter Holland is always willing to overlook others' faults, and he sometimes overdoes his charitableness.
His childhood and early home life was in many ways unsettling, and the nurturing Holland received was erratic and unreliable at best. Dexter Holland has had to move a lot, or Holland's family may have been blatantly different from other people so that Dexter was often deemed an outsider or a "weirdo". As an adult, Dexter Holland may long for "normalcy" while at the same time he balks at any routine, structure, formality or restrictions.
Dexter Holland often becomes nervous or shaky when emotionally stressed. Developing a regular rhythm and a steady, consistent (if not traditional) way of life would be beneficial to Holland, both emotionally and physically.
The beauty and harmony of his surroundings have a very powerful effect on Holland's emotions. He is very sensitive and cannot stand to be in an atmosphere where there is discord or dissonance. Gentle, kindhearted, and peace loving, Dexter Holland is prepared to sacrifice a great deal in order to avoid a fight and to "make everyone happy".
He is open and unconventional in his attitude towards love relationships, romance and sex. He enjoys socializing, bringing people together and having many friends of both sexes. Dexter Holland values friendship very highly and in fact, he is more comfortable being a friend than a lover. Dexter desires an intellectual rapport or spiritual bond with his love partner, but deep intimacy and emotional bonding do not come easily to him.
The traditional "husband" and "wife" roles do not appeal to Holland, and he abhors jealousy and possessiveness since he feels that no person truly "belongs" to another. Dexter Holland appreciates relationships in which his love partner allows him plenty of freedom and is not very emotionally demanding.
Holland is a very sociable, congenial person and he wilts very quickly without relationships with good friends and people to share good times with. Dexter Holland thoroughly enjoys working with others on group projects or community activities. He is quite happy when he is a part of a club, support group, or team of some sort.
Dexter Holland's fundamental needs, values, and orientation towards life are symbolized by the four astrological elements. Each person has their own unique balance of these four basic energies: fire (warmth, inspiration, enthusiasm), earth (practicality, realism, material interests), air (social and intellectual qualities), and water (emotional needs and feelings).
Holland's "elemental make-up" is described below. Remember that most people are "unbalanced" or lopsided, and if Dexter is lacking or deficient in a certain element (or elements), it simply means that he needs to consciously develop that particular aspect in order to appreciate and/or work harder in that dimension of life.
Sometimes we overestimate the element that we are least endowed with, sensing it as a lack within ourselves, but more often we neglect or ignore it. The qualities described below will be reiterated and explained in more detail in the following pages.
Dexter Holland possesses a measure of all the elements and is thus less likely than others to overemphasize or completely neglect one dimension of experience in favor of another. He is capable of both thinking and feeling, envisioning possibilities and dealing effectively with the here-and-now. This does not mean that Dexter does not have definite preferences and attitudes (these will be covered in the following chapters), nor even that he does not go overboard in his own particular way. But Dexter Holland is a more versatile and complex person, less one-sided than many other people are, and thus able to draw on all of the elemental qualities as required. In addition, Holland is able to relate to most people, recognizing a bit of himself in their values.
The following is a description of Dexter's basic stance toward life, the way others see him, the way Dexter Holland comes across, the face he shows to the world. In the page about motivation you will read about the inner Dexter Holland - his real motivation, which describes the kind of person he is at heart and where his true priorities lie. Study this page and the next one and compare them - there may be significant differences between the two, in which case "the inner Dexter Holland" may not shine through and others may be in for so a few surprises once they get to know Dexter a little better. This page describes the disguise Holland wears, his role in life, while the page about motivation talks about the real person beneath the disguise.
Dexter Holland meets life head on and throws himself into new experiences with zest and enthusiasm. He is direct, straightforward, assertive, and usually completely aboveboard in all his dealings. Candid and incapable of guile, insincerity or phoniness,
Dexter projects a confident and sometimes arrogant fašade to others. He often lacks tact and sensitivity, and can be completely oblivious to others' needs, and inadvertently selfish. Holland is self-reliant and does not depend upon social approval and reinforcement as much as other people do. He likes to be original and does not mind doing it alone. Dexter Holland may feel that he does not fit into groups very well and that he does not naturally blend in and cooperate with others. He likes to be either a leader or a loner.
Holland is a doer and thrives on freedom, challenge, and activity. He tends to think in clear, black and white terms, and to be somewhat simplistic in his outlook, which enables Dexter to act in a very decisive and self-assured manner. When inspired by an idea, Dexter Holland feels such a sense of urgency and excitement about it that he will often forge ahead and try to implement it in a rather bold but poorly planned and crudely executed way. Patience and careful attention to details are not Holland's forte. However, he never accepts defeat and will experience brilliant and unprecedented successes and discoveries, as well as painful failures. To Dexter Holland it is far better to make mistakes than to play it safe and never try.
He is scornful of what he sees as weakness or passivity in others and also of the human tendency to imitate and follow. Dexter Holland is not a follower. Others see Dexter as a strong individual and perhaps brash and brazen as well. Holland presents a strong front to the world and generally does not allow others to see his vulnerable or insecure side.
Bright, alert, quick of tongue and/or of movement, there is youthfulness about Dexter's manner and appearance regardless of his chronological age. Dexter Holland also always appears busy and active, and somewhat restless. Holland needs mental stimulation from his environment, or he will rapidly get bored.
Dexter Holland has a sweet, appealing demeanor and seems instinctively to grasp the concept that "one catches more flies with honey than with vinegar". His personal brand of charm is usually quite winning. Dexter coax rather than coerce. However, if he does not get what he wants, Dexter Holland is likely to resort to insincere flattery, wheedling, whining, or pouting rather than stating directly what he needs, or doing for himself. Holland seems to need others' approval first.
There is a certain depth and intensity about Dexter that may be threatening to others. No matter how gentle or unassuming Dexter Holland may be on the surface, he is also a force to be reckoned with. Dexter has causes, passions, or desires that drive him and when one of these is aroused Holland is quite zealous in his pursuit or defense of it.
He is self-assured and confident in dealing with others and has a positive influence on his environment. Dexter Holland is able to work well with others in a team effort, and advantages through other people could come to him frequently.
In addition to having an independent spirit, as described in the previous chapter, Dexter Holland is also objective, pragmatic and quite ambitious. He is likely to work his way to the top of the ladder in some corporation, academic community or the like through his astute strategies combined with his willingness to take risks. Dexter Holland aims to be

the authority, the one in charge. At times his impulsiveness may be at odds with his conservative, responsible side (which is discussed below). Holland could experience ongoing internal tension between pleasing himself and acting spontaneously versus doing what he needs to do to get ahead and realize his long-range ambitions.
Serious, disciplined and quietly ambitious, he is driven to prove himself and to achieve material accomplishments and success. His work, his position in the world, and his contributions to society are very important to Holland. Dexter Holland will persevere through enormous hardship and frustration in order to reach a goal he has set for himself, and he often sacrifices much in the area of personal relationships and home life in order to do so.
Dexter Holland has a thoughtful, quiet and self-contained disposition and does not readily show his inner feelings and needs. Dexter Holland seems to always be in control, capable, efficient and strong. He is often the person in the family or group who is given more responsibility (and more work) than the others. He is highly conscientious and even as a child he possessed great maturity, soberness, and worldly wisdom.
He is basically a pragmatic realist, and though he may have all sorts of dreams, ideals and colorful theories, he feels that the ultimate test of a concept is its practical usefulness. Dexter has an innate shrewdness and business sense, and there is a bit of the cynic in him as well.
He is clear-headed, detached and objective, and is not swayed by emotional dramatics. He is often authoritarian - strictly fair, but without mercy. Dexter Holland has a great respect for tradition and even if he does not agree with certain laws, he will abide by them or strive to change them, but never flagrantly disregard them. Cautious and conservative, Dexter Holland plays by the rules.
He is subtle, understated, quiet, deep, not easy to get to know intimately, and never superficial. He is a modest person and sometimes overly self-critical. Giving himself (and others) permission to feel, play, be spontaneous and silly, and sometimes weak and vulnerable is not easy for Holland.
Holland's strong points are his depth and thoroughness, patience, tenacity and faithfulness. His faults are a tendency to be rigid and inflexible, and too serious.
World travel, foreign cultures, and studies which expand his intellectual horizons and broaden his understanding of the world are very attractive to Holland.
Dexter Holland has a philosophical turn of mind and is concerned with seeking answers to the big questions of life or getting the overview of any situation. Abstract concepts and/or plans for the future occupy his mind much of the time.
Dexter Holland possesses vision and foresight, and his mind is often occupied with big ideas, plans and goals for the future. He is interested in what is possible and what is on the horizon, rather than what has already been done. Holland is attracted to the study of philosophy, religion, politics or education and he is more concerned with theories and concepts than with specific applications. He is not inclined to focus on any specific,
concrete area; It irks Dexter to deal with details and particulars. Dexter Holland has a gambling instinct and enjoys speculative enterprises and new ventures. Business, advertising and promotion would also be ideally suited to him.
Dexter has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and wisdom and for an ever broadening understanding of life. Dexter Holland is the perpetual student and will be involved in higher education, philosophy, or religion. Law, broadcasting, publishing, or fields of communications are also areas that interest Holland. World travel and studying other cultures are also strong urges of his.
He is an original thinker, capable of unique discoveries and innovations, but he tends to scatter his energies in too many directions at once and to make impulsive or hasty decisions. Dexter Holland grasps ideas very quickly and becomes impatient with duller or more conservative minds. A fast-moving, mentally stimulating, and unpredictable atmosphere suits Dexter quite well, even though he may complain about the stress and the crazy pace. Dexter Holland has a technical bent and is interested in the newest scientific theories and findings, electronics, computers, etc.
Never satisfied with the face value of anything, Dexter is always probing beneath the surface for deeper reasons and hidden motives - though he rarely reveals his own. Dexter Holland has a very suspicious, even paranoid, side. His mind is penetrating and Dexter Holland has an aptitude for research, investigative reporting or private investigation. He is keenly interested in the deeper aspects of the human psyche, with a sort of "x-ray vision" of the inner motivations and intentions of others. He is drawn to anything secret, hidden, or mysterious, and may pursue esoteric or occult studies. Holland is also a forceful and convincing speaker or writer, with the ability to influence people's thinking by the sheer power of his conviction.
He is very socially oriented and works well with others. He may be active in community affairs or unite with others of similar ideals and intentions to work toward a common goal. Progressive and democratic, Dexter Holland is not concerned with hoarding personal power or having authority over others. He is a team player.
New, unconventional methods appeal to Holland, especially ideas that involve bringing people together or creating fairer working conditions - such as networking, profit sharing, and job sharing. New technologies also interest him.
His energy level is high but somewhat erratic. Dexter Holland can be impatient, rebellious and inconstant in pursuing his aims.
He is a team player and works well in collaboration with others who share his goals, ideals, and intentions. Dexter Holland can coordinate group efforts and inspire people to work toward a shared goal.
Team sports are also a lot of fun for Dexter, and he could be a leader, coach, or director of any group endeavor.
Dexter has the ability to verbalize his feelings and perceptions well. His judgment is keen and sharp, he is diplomatic and can express himself in good language. Dexter Holland initiates conversations with people and is never at a loss for appropriate remarks.
Dexter Holland has a great talent for organizing projects and the ability to inspire others with his enthusiasm. Having the urge to achieve, Dexter Holland is capable of tremendous effort and uses all the energy at his disposal to gain success with his objectives.
Positions of honor, affluence, influence, and stature in his community can be his. Dexter Holland feels he has a destiny which involves leadership or distinguishing himself in some line of endeavor. Dexter possesses an innate sense of greatness or importance, and a strong drive to achieve recognition for his talent. Dexter Holland should avoid excessive egotism and arrogant pride, for these could limit his opportunities.
Dexter Holland achieves his professional goals and long-range ambitions through self-discipline, concentration, and climbing the mountain one step at a time. Unlike the lucky few for whom all doors seem to magically open, Dexter has to formulate a realistic plan and follow it diligently in order to succeed. Dexter Holland will have to pay his dues and endure a few setbacks. Patience is his ally.
His father or grandfather probably influenced Holland's choice of career, and will back him up - as long as Dexter chooses to follow in their footsteps.
Dexter has the ability to see connections between seemingly unrelated ideas or worlds, and to bring them together. He excels in any field requiring clear intellect, and verbal and communication skills. Dexter has an insatiable curiosity and may read or watch television constantly in order to satisfy his need for mental stimulation. His mind never stops.
Dexter Holland has a great love of learning and an eager, curious, active mind which impels him to travel and see as much of the world as possible. He reads widely, and may excel academically. Dexter loves being in teacher-student relationships and may stay in school for many years, prolonging his studies for as long as possible! Dexter Holland also communicates well and would be an effective, inspiring teacher.
Public relations or any other field that is involving communications and sharing information suits Holland very well.
Dexter Holland often has a sense of longing or homesickness for something he cannot name or specify, and he may have both: great attraction toward, and fear of, mysticism and parapsychology.
Overcoming feelings of fear, guilt, anxiety, loneliness, or oversensitivity is an important task for Holland.
He may have nebulous but ever-present guilt and fears that are difficult to pinpoint or eradicate. It is as if Dexter Holland does not trust Life itself, and is always seeking ways
12-08-2008, 11:36 PM
to defend himself from its dangers and its unknowns. Dexter Holland must learn to overcome his ingrained habit of discouragement and anxiety, and to see the world more as a friendly place than as a treacherous one.
Basically shy, Dexter may become a bit inhibited when talking with other people. Dexter Holland tends to withdraw from others and likes to live a humble, quiet live in seclusion. He may get involved with a group of a secretive nature, although Holland is not one to join groups in general.
Now we will discuss patterns of behavior which Dexter Holland instinctively and habitually reverts to when under stress - a mostly subconscious process that he is apt to over indulge in because it is so familiar and hence easy for him. The direction Dexter Holland needs to follow in order to develop balance, greater awareness, and wholeness is also described.
Dexter Holland needs to take what he has learned (either through formal education or his own questing and life experience) and share it with others, communicate it or express it in a way that can benefit others. Knowledge and understanding, which does not enhance either Dexter's quality of life or that of persons in his world, is of little real value. Putting Holland's understanding, philosophy, and convictions into practice in his daily relationships, and in the multiple choices he makes every day, will enable Dexter Holland to really test his belief system and discover more about life.
When under stress, Dexter Holland is apt to seek refuge in imagining that the grass is greener elsewhere, rather than working with what is at hand. Dexter Holland needs to cultivate his ability to live in the present!
It is in his dealings with money, financial security, tangible assets and possessions that he is most likely to wrestle with these issues. The qualities described above are ones Dexter Holland needs to integrate in tangible ways: how he makes a living, building assets and a secure material base, what he does with the resources he has. Dexter Holland should try to avoid over involvement or entanglements with other people's money matters, legal business, and personal affairs.
He enjoys relationships with others who can tune into the spiritual world and Dexter Holland is likely to join groups or associations that sponsor psychics and that explore the connection with karmic influences.
Areas Where Dexter Holland is Creative, Unique, Unstable, or Compulsive
His work habits may be unstructured and Dexter Holland may find it difficult to settle down to a routine task or work situation.
He is interested in new technologies or unusual, even revolutionary methods of solving problems in his work. Nontraditional methods of healing and medicine also fascinate him. Dexter Holland may work in an alternative health field or work for change and reform in whatever field he chooses.
Dexter Holland has a very active imagination and powerful fantasies. He may develop an interest in the supernatural, psychic phenomena, or occult subjects. Holland may have strange fantasies and/or nebulous fears of "ghosts", "the astral plane", or death. It is better for Dexter Holland not to dabble in such areas unless he is thoroughly grounded in the practical world as well.
Dexter can become obsessed with his health, self-improvement and personal development. The psychological elements of disease interest him, and Dexter Holland may endlessly psychoanalyze himself and others.
Also, he may work compulsively and exhaust himself through overwork. Dexter Holland can be a tyrant with co-workers, and it may be easier for Dexter to work in solitude.
Dexter Holland has a need to be popular and a strong desire to be successful in his community. He is inclined to attract very unusual people with whom he shares his experiences. But some of his relationships could also be upsetting or have sudden twists.
Emotionally changeable, Holland tends to have little faith, is low-spirited, and he cannot seem to enjoy himself. Perhaps his early upbringing was filled with feelings of guilt and Dexter Holland was made to behave by fear of severe punishment.
He is inquisitive and curious and has great interest in novelties. Dexter Holland has the gift of replying with a swift witty answer when challenged, and flexible in thinking, he changes his plans quickly if necessary, and always seems to make the right choice.
Holland always seems to be looking for the hen that lays the golden eggs. Hoping for personal luck and good fortune, Dexter Holland should beware of taking risky chances or speculating. Things that seem too good to be true usually are not.
Holland may feels that he cannot rely on anyone but himself and that force is needed to get ahead in life. He tends to go his way alone and can be rather stressed and anxious at times. Dexter Holland may deny himself things and rather go without than asking others for help.
Here we will discuss characteristics and traits of Dexter Holland's generation. Of course, Dexter may not share all of the characteristics of his generation, but he is greatly affected by the tone that is set by his generation.
The first topic focuses on the subconscious and emotional drive of this age group. In this section we will describe a deeply felt urge - and even compulsion - of Dexter's age group. This deeply felt drive comes to the surface very forcefully, thereby leaving considerable upheaval and change in its wake. The second topic concerns the dreams, fantasies and spiritual aspirations of Dexter's age group. The third and last topic describes what is new and different in his age group; it highlights areas in which Holland's age group tends to be innovative, inventive and unusual, as well as where it may be unstable and unreliable.
The characteristics described below may affect a group of people for anywhere from a
few years to about 30 years. There are one or more different astrological factors described in each of the three sections below.
The Subconscious and Emotional Drive of Dexter Holland's Age Group
Dexter Holland is part of a 15-year group of people that are driven by the need to find an ethical standard and a clear sense of what is right and what is wrong. There is a subconscious drive to remedy all of the world's evils and create a world of perfect order. There is a feeling of repulsion to anything ugly, dirty, or grotesque. Oddly enough, this group is also often fascinated with these very things that are so unsavory, thereby creating a sense of hopelessness and despair about the world's condition.
These inner, conflicting emotions are reflected in the attitudes and life styles of Holland's generation. Most people of Holland's age group are conservative and ethical, and a small minority goes to the opposite extreme and relishes being strange or unusual in appearance, and sloppy or even grotesque in their demeanor. There seems to be no middle ground for Holland's generation. Usually, the rebellious behavior surfaces during adolescence and subsides thereafter, and Holland's age group tends to be very conservative in later life.
Dexter Holland's age group is not very good at compromising and tends to have strong ideas about what is right and what is wrong. There is a strong feeling that they must eliminate evil from the world. Fostering good deeds is certainly very commendable, but a categorical and simple-minded response to complex issues is not helpful. His age group will undergo tremendous fluctuations in their attitudes toward Good and Evil and will swing to great extremes. Dexter's generation will also make great contributions in the areas of medicine and nutrition, ecology, and education.
Dexter Holland was also born during a period that lasted approximately 5 years and is characterized by extreme restlessness and an impatient, dynamic attitude towards life. He is part of a group of people who can be explosive and even violent in their reactions to situations. This group does not tolerate being restricted, and rebels with force and anger against oppression.
The Ideals and Illusions of Dexter Holland's Age Group
Dexter Holland is part of a 14-year group of people that have very intense psychic sensitivity and imagination. Dexter Holland's age group is very attracted to the strange, the bizarre and the unusual. Their affinity for things macabre is reflected in much of the music, art, and fashions of Holland's age group. Novels and movies with mystery and chilling suspense are also popular with Dexter Holland's age group. Emotional depression, drug use, and suicide are likely to be relatively high in Dexter Holland's age group. There is also a deep mystical sense, and Eastern religions and meditation are very attractive to his age group.
He is quite open to psychic experiences and altered states of consciousness, and does not have to work very hard to achieve them. Dexter Holland belongs to an idealistic, free-thinking group of people who will advance the spiritual progress of humankind as a whole.

W hen Offspring frontman Dexter Holland attended USC, he could never get KSCR to air any of his songs. Since then, the Offspring arguably has achieved more commercial success than any punk band in history, with the possible exception of Green Day. Holland (also the head of Nitro Records) appeared on KSCR's "The Bear's Den" with host Barry "The Bear" Levine on Friday, one day after the 10th anniversary of the release of their breakout album, Smash.
Holland received a bachelor's degree in biology in 1988 and a master's in molecular biology in 1990, both from USC. After failing to get into medical school, he started work on a doctorate, and was working on his dissertation when Smash came out. Although he admits he didn't have much school spirit at the time, he now describes himself as an enthusiastic alumnus.
Holland actually had never attended a football game until last year, when he learned the marching band had been performing "The Kids Aren't Alright." He said he is flattered that the band wanted to play his music, and he thought there were some songs on the new album the band could do, including "Hit That" (which the band performed at the UCLA game) and "Neocon."
The Offspring traces its roots back to the members' high school days in the early 1980s. Holland remembers that they hung out in the quad at lunch and liked many of the same bands. Although none of them played instruments, when they tried to go to a Social Distortion concert and couldn't get in, the friends decided to form their own band.
Growing up in Orange County, they were influenced by local bands such as Social Distortion, T.S.O.L., the Vandals, D.I., the Adolescents and Channel 3, as well as punk rock staples the Dead Kennedys, the Sex Pistols and the Ramones. As Holland and the others started to improve as musicians, they began playing shows at local clubs and became involved with the 924 Gilman Street Project, which helped launch bands such as Green Day and Operation Ivy.
After putting out their own self-titled album in 1989, the Offspring signed with fledgling Epitaph Records, and things began to pick up for the band. "Something was just starting to happen at that time," Holland said. "It was just post-Nirvana and Epitaph was on a roll with Bad Religion, Pennywise, and NOFX. Our record, Ignition, all of a sudden, shot from 15,000 to 50,000 in a few months and we were recording Smash, so it was an exciting time. We thought if that one did 50,000 maybe we could do 75,000 but it got on the radio, and it really took off.
"It was weird to see it because it was getting played in L.A., and then you'd hear it in Vegas and Phoenix, and pretty soon, MTV got on it. It was a weird thing to watch."
Smash went on to sell 12 million copies worldwide - not bad for a band that finished last in a "battle of the bands" at its former high school two years before.
After signing with Columbia Records following Smash, people from independent labels and fans alike have criticized the Offspring for their major label status. Holland said that their time at Epitaph had been a great experience, but the band reached a point when it was time to move on. The band has been happy with Columbia because they have been able to continue working in the D.I.Y. spirit.
"There are so many horror stories about what happens to bands when they go on major labels," Holland said. "When we got signed to Columbia, we basically said, 'We don't want any input from you guys. We want you to put out a record when we're done, and if you guys are cool with that, then we've got a deal.' We've been able to run things ourselves, so it's been great."
Holland called the notion that the Offspring has sold out "ridiculous" and decried the elitism that plagues the punk scene today. "What I saw about punk was that it wasn't confining, but that it was liberating," he said. "It was about an event that drew the crowd in and made it something that this group of people shared together, so the fact that our record was heard by a lot of people was exactly what I would want."
He went on to joke that William Hung, the infamous American Idol reject, was a sellout.
"You should have seen him before. His old stuff was actually really good," he quipped, drawing laughter from "The Bear's Den."
Holland discussed some of the songs from their new album, Splinter, on the air, including "The Noose," "Spare Me the Details" and "The Worst Hangover Ever." Like their other six albums, Splinter features a trademark Offspring sound, but includes several songs in which they try new things. The title is a reference to this eclecticism.
"On this record, we have a lot of songs that sound like what people think of when they think of the Offspring, and a lot of songs that splinter off into different directions, so 'Splinter' just seemed to make sense," Holland said.
Holland, who writes almost all of the Offspring's songs, said that much of the inspiration for these new sounds comes from boredom. In graduate school, he commuted to USC from his parents' home in Garden Grove. He would come up with songs in his head to pass the time, and to this day, he still writes some of his music in the car.
Holland has employed Middle Eastern motifs, especially in his earlier songs, and he also cited surf bands like the Ventures and Dick Dale as inspirational. His inspiration can come from anywhere, however - the Conspiracy of One song "Special Delivery" was actually inspired by a sound effect from the "Donkey Kong" arcade game.
On "The Bear's Den," Holland also discussed the Offspring's latest tour, which kicked off Saturday in Vancouver with the (International) Noise Conspiracy and The Start. The tour will stop in Los Angeles for a show at the Universal Amphitheatre on Friday. This will be the first U.S. tour for the Offspring since veteran drummer Ron Welty left the band last year. After 16 years with Welty, the band added former Rocket from the Crypt drummer Atom Willard to the lineup. Holland said that Welty's departure was a mutual decision.
"We grew up together in a lot of ways, but unfortunately, everybody changes over time. There was a point where we just weren't getting along very well anymore."
He hesitated to say for sure that Willard would be a permanent replacement, but he added that they have enjoyed working with Willard, and that he has made the transition easy.
In addition to the Offspring, Holland heads up Nitro Records, the label he started in 1994. He had always wanted to have a record label, and had been inspired by other labels founded by punk rockers, such as Brett Gurewitz's Epitaph Records. When the Offspring cohort Guttermouth needed a label, Holland pressed their records in his kitchen, and Nitro was born. After the success of Smash, he suddenly had the startup capital he needed to expand the lineup. Holland said that he always wanted to be a band member who had a label on the side, not a record mogul, and its success has also allowed him to have enough people on staff to run the label on a day-to-day basis.
During the second half of Friday's show, Holland showcased some Nitro bands, including A Wilhelm Scream, Ensign, the Damned, A.F.I., Rufio, T.S.O.L., the Original Sinners and touring partners The Start. One perk to having Nitro, Holland said, has been getting to sign bands that he idolized, such as T.S.O.L. and the Vandals. T.S.O.L. was his favorite band and most significant influence, he said.
"They changed me from just a music fan into someone who really wanted to be in a band."
Holland was also enthusiastic about Rufio, who played a KSCR show in 2001 and outdrew the headliner, the Stereo. He had very high praise for their musical talent, and said he expects great things to happen to them.
Holland also discussed A.F.I., who, after five releases with Nitro, went to DreamWorks for their latest album, Sing the Sorrow. He revealed that A.F.I. had been under contract for another album with Nitro, but had reached a point where they wanted to move on, and he didn't want to stand in their way. Holland said he was proud to have been a part of their development.
"I like to think of them as a good example of how a record label is supposed to work," he said. "You sign a band and give them a chance to develop, where they're not under pressure to come with an instant hit right away."
So what's next for Dexter Holland? After 20 years, he said it might be time for the Offspring greatest hits album. The band has discussed the possibility of putting out a greatest hits or a live album, but nothing is in the works yet. He also said he would not rule out playing a show at USC, and he would eventually like to come back and finish his Ph.D. For now, however, the Offspring shows no signs of slowing down.
"I've always said it would be a few more years because it's hard to imagine going on beyond that. But every time, when it's a few years later, I'm like, 'Maybe we can go a few more years.' Maybe there's a point where it just doesn't feel good anymore, or starts to feel ridiculous. For now, we're still having fun with it."

The entire generation to which Dexter Holland belongs has tremendous opportunities for spiritual rebirth and awakening. This will not be forced upon Holland or precipitated by unavoidable events, rather it comes from an inner yearning and a natural propensity to seek the depths.
What is New and Different in Dexter Holland's Age Group
Dexter Holland is part of a 7-year group of people who employ their skills and creativity to promote a great deal of practical reform in education, medical care, and other social services. Their innovations are not radical or unusual, but they are usually effective.
Dexter's generation also boasts a curious mixture of both conservative, ethical people, and rebellious, disruptive people. There seems to be little middle ground for Holland's age group, and he swings from one extreme to the other. The conservative people strive to reinstate strict moral standards, want to swiftly punish criminal behavior, and strive to highlight the importance of old-fashioned values in our lives, laws, and overall life style. On the other hand, the rebellious people of Holland's generation are angry at the established way of doing things and act in a defiant, crude, and coarse manner.
