It's all about the context clues.

Means that you want or intend to be more of who you are.......
For example: The wealthy who behave as rich....but they are not.....:D

I've been taught to think it means a show-off, showy etc.

If someone called you pretentious, it more than likely wasn't a compliment. More than likely, they think you are mighty full of yourself. ;)

Pretentious is just a fancy way of saying snob, usually about cultural matters.
