Accidentally giving a shit; or, why Karl Marx doesn't like me anymore

So, I have a job. A job I'm quite good at, but not one I ever saw myself doing. Briefly, I work for a bolting company, helping re-allocate stock to different depots and blah-de-blah etc etc.

Something occurred to me today that really surprised me. I actually do care about what goes on in this place, and it's really snuck up on me. When I was a big dirty hardcore socialist in my youth, I was determined that I would give not a single fuck about any job that wasn't worthy or helping the world or the majority in some way - as is the arrogance of young hardcore dirty socialists - and then suddenly, I give a damn about why this shipment hasn't been transferred from Aberdeen, or why this AJ2 is on the system as an AJ3 and so on. I shout at people for fucking up. And it came from nowhere.

I'm not disappointed in myself or anything like that, but it's certainly an odd feeling. Has anyone else had this?

I mentioned this a few months ago on here...

I like to sort of trick myself into believing that I care about what goes on at my job. Seeing how efficient I can be is sort of like a game so to speak. It's a psychological thing. I don't really care about the company, but the act of actually contributing to something is just more stimulating...which somehow makes work more bearable.


So maybe that's why you feel like this. I dunno though.

That's a good point, actually. It's not the same sort of "care" I have for studying or anything else that's important to me.. maybe I've just become conditioned. Either way, Karl marx definitely doesn't like me anymore.

I am a leftist who somewhat sympathizes with the goals of socialism and sometimes I feel as though by working hard I am going against the right wing stereotype that liberals are lazy. lol.

I wouldn't agree in that I was swayed from my principles, since politically I don't really have any ideals as such anymore to sway from - I just wish I could see the look on my 17 year old self's face as it splutters with rage and indignation.
