If I'm going to lie to my children, it's going to be for a good reason or it's not going to happen.
(2) An ethical framework is a much more useful method of morality than a fear- or reward-based monitoring system. If I were teaching my kids about how to behave, I would want them to have a reason to behave even when nobody is watching; otherwise you're not really teaching your children ethics, you're teaching them to put on a mask in order to get something out of it. We have another saying where I come from, that "Morality is what you do when nobody is looking." That includes Santa Clauses, gods, and whomever or whatever else.
