I never got a flu shot, either. Well, when I was a kid, I think I did.
Vaccines don't make people sick, they use a dead virus. They take a couple days to kick in, and it can take a few days for a flu virus to make really obvious symptoms, so they were probably already infected when they got the shot and just didn't know it, or got a cold or unrelated virus (which isn't uncommon considering the time of year flu shots are given).
And I think you're thinking of mercury, not aluminum.
I'm pretty sure that if the body reacts to the dead virus as if it were alive, you show some symptoms.
