Depending on how early you go in September, there would be a couple opportunities to see a game:

The main hockey league - the NHL - is in the "preseason" near the end of the month and the local team, the Maple Leafs would be playing some games. These would be the most expensive option however.

A maybe better bet would be the OHL - (Ontario Hockey League) which is a junior level league - tickets are relatively inexpensive.
