And yeah, that's what I meant by "hokey." I have this deep, deep fear of lapsing into writing nothing but catchy pop tunes. Which is weird when you think about it, because I really like a lot of pop music (Green Day, Collective Soul, OK Go, etc.).

But yeah, it's pretty hard to deny your roots. I grew up on pop and rock and bluegrass, so yeah.

Hehe, nothing to fear, really. To me Offspring has the catchiest songs ever. A catchy song is super as long as song has some good message and your songs never been poppy message-wise.

In the version I uploaded, I said, "When you don't fear a God, you've become what I am again," but I thought that was a little too blatant so I toned it down a bit. I've redone the vocals and smoothed 'em out a bit because I overloaded in some places (bad habit of mine, heh). But yeah.

EDIT: It's about several things, really, but I guess the one thing it's about most of all is the "xHxcorex" Christian definition of "love," where you're basically driven out of a community and cast out as a social pariah, all under the blanket definition of "love" --- that "we love you and we don't want you to go to hell, so that's why we abuse you like this, because we want you to change!"

And I totally agree about the message thing. That's what I hate about so much pop nowadays, is that there's just fluff and nothing else. That's why I like that some more alternative bands are kind of sneaking into the pop scene, like Green Day and Offspring and Bad Religion --- it's kind of like they're injecting a vector-virus of intellect into a stagnant scene, ya know?

Anyway, I regret not listening to your myspace until now. You've got something and I likey. But the way you have to record drums sounds miserable. What drum machine are you using? If you want to stay in the "free" price range, I'd recommend Hydrogen (somewhere here). And let me know if you need some drum samples. They're not great, but they decent for free.

And yeah, I'm the one with the shrill voice As for the drums, most of our early stuff uses the drum machine on my sister's Casio keyboard (subpar even by drum machine standards), so it requires a lot of equalization to fix up to the point of listenability. However, I got a new electric drum kit a couple of weeks ago, and I've been practicing and experimenting with that on our more recent stuff. The tracks I actually play drums on are (IIRC):

--What I Am (Again)
--D.R.P. (it's not on the Myspace, it's on our purevolume account)
--The Ground (2.0; I still have to put this one up)
--The new collaboration I'm finishing up mixing as I type this (it's called "Forget Me")
--Americana '08

I think that's it for now. I'm also working on another original track called "Giving Up, Live It Up" that I'll play drums on.

I really, really want to learn how to play drums so I can at least record my own stuff without having to rely on a drummer (we can't find a drummer for shit right now; there are like 4 drummers in the tri-state area, and they're all already in like 5 bands apiece). So I'll be experimenting with some simpler stuff, and maybe some basic fills and whatnot, over the next few weeks, until I've gotten comfortable with the drums. Right now I kinda suck 0_0

I tried to focus more on instrumentation in this one, so be listening carefully to the guitars and bass and drums, not just the vocals. I'm getting a little better at the drums, but there's still one slip-up during the first chorus that I couldn't seem to get right. Oh, well --- I guess that's punx or whatever, so it's okay, right? (hah, j/k, you no get mad, please? Good times for everyone!)
