More punctuation/vocab/something help

Once again, I am writing an essay, and there is always that one bastard of a sentence.

So, I don't really want to say 'indebted to' or 'owes thanks to', because that sounds really positive, and just doesn't seem to fit in right. Also, the last part seems to be a bit awkward too, or does it? I don't know!

The status and treatment of women in the Early Modern Period is indebted to a number of different societies; those of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, which those during the Renaissance were trying to replicate and reproduce; and of the Christian society of the Middle Ages, out of which they were emerging.

would this work?

Evolved from, descended out of, bears influence of, etc.

And use past tense for the last part. "From which they emerged".

edit ; Also, "Christendom" works better than "Christian society" since it means exactly that.
