Prohibition in the Czech Republic
Just thought I'd try posting something interesting that maybe people will actually want to talk about without fighting? I dunno. Alcohol seems like a pretty good uniting conversation topic, right?
It's not really that indefinite, as they plan to end it as soon as the perpetrators are caught. Beer and wine are still allowed, and that's what most people in CZ seem to drink, anyway. But what's crazy to me is that 19 people dead is "only" the worst case of alcohol poisoning in 30 years... :-SShop owners began clearing off their shelves on Friday following the government-issued a ban on liquors that contained more than 20% alcohol after 19 people died from drinking spirits that contained poisonous methanol. The ban applies to restaurants, bars, street vendors and supermarkets and to every brand of liquor.
The outbreak, the worst of its kind in decades, has left thirty people in the hospital, some of those who have gone blind and some who have been put into artificial comas by doctors.
The widespread poisonings have been blamed on outdoor shops where alcohol can be bought cheaply, and so far, 10 people have been arrested and over 5,000 liters of spirits seized.
