I think that there are two main reasons why people say vauge words like "stuff."

1. They want to say something in the fewest amount of words as possible and when they assume people get their point, they leave the rest implied in the form of the word "stuff."

2. They really aren't interested in talking at the moment and just want to finish their sentences as quickly as possible.
