Screw that. Steve's numerous woman threads will teach you all you need to know.
Everything is a chemical reaction, I don't really see why they try to pass this off as news. The fact that someone dying makes you sad is caused by chemicals. The fact that songs can make you feel happy/sad/whatever is caused by chemicals. Every feeling you have ever had and will ever have is caused by chemicals. The fact that people are putting that much depth into studying it as they are kinda worries me though because sooner or later people are going to try to fuck with it.

EXACTLY! for the fuckin love of god. People use this "love is just a chemical reaction" shit as a legitimate argument.. and it's ridiculous, because SO IS EVERYTHING ELSE YOU FEEL.

"When we are attracted to somebody, it could be because subconsciously we like their genes"
Duh.... it's a way to keep ourselves in check and breed with good genes. Figured that one out myself quite some time ago. Goes with "attractiveness" being connected to good health etc. Nice curves and tits means you'll make a good mother and all that.

Seconded. The argument goes something like this.
Bitter Idiot ; Fuck love! Love is bullshit! Love is just a chemical reaction!
Depending on who they're talking to, the argument can take three different routes.
Another Bitter Idiot ; Yeah man, fuck love! The world is nothing but pain and sorrow! Love is just a drug that the stupid sunshine and rainbow mainstreamers are addicted to! Fuck love! Pass the eyeliner.
A Naive Idiot ; No way that's bullshit cause I love my man soooo much and we always hold hands and cuddle and holding hands isn't a chemical so how the fuck can love be? You're just bitter because nobody loves you and everybody loves me!
or
Somebody Slighty Intelligent ; Yeah..... so?
I think that the more I recognize the fact I'm attracted to guys whose looks and smell remind me of my parents, the more freaked out I am. I'm glad they don't teach THAT at schools.

Nobody believes you.
And killer_queen, don't feel bad. There's nothing wrong with being sixteen and never having been in a relationship. And it's not because of any of your failings that you haven't snagged your dream guy yet. It's because you're Turkish and men hate that.

Plato's Symposium has some awesome speeches about the nature of love - I'm re-reading it right now; Aristophanes' idea is especially interesting.

Exactly. Just cause something is a chemical reaction doesn't mean that you're not really feeling it.
And fuck with emotions, yeah. That's likely to happen.
They already fuck with emotions with things such as prozac and zoloft and that's...ok to an extent (even though it seems like half the world is on something of the sort nowadays and most of them don't really need it). Someday they're going to make a pill to make people fall out of love, and that's going to be awful.

I heard that they're already thinking of using synthetic oxytocin (the hormone released during sex), also known as the trust hormone.
"Men who inhale a nasal spray spiked with oxytocin give more money to partners in a risky investment game than do men who sniff a spray containing no active ingredient, say economist Ernst Fehr of the University of Zurich and his colleagues."
Not sure if this is 100% true.. but, hey, creepy, right? the possibilities of abuse (date rape, etc) could be endless.
*cringe*
Yeah, that is kind of scary.

Yup, read about it on another forum:
Mark Henderson, London
June 03, 2005
SCIENTISTS have created a "trust serum" that could help in the treatment of autism or phobias - but could be a dangerous weapon in the hands of confidence tricksters.
Research in Switzerland has revealed that sniffing a hormone called oxytocin makes people more likely to trust others, raising alarming implications for the manipulation of an emotion critical to social and economic relationships.
Oxytocin might be abused as a "trust serum" that could be sprayed over crowds at political rallies, piped into a casino or business meeting, or exploited as an aphrodisiac to persuade a romantic target to drop their guard.
Oxytocin has even been nicknamed the "elixir of love", because levels of the hormone rise after sex and in the first flush of a romance. It also plays a part in inducing lactation and labour.
The new study, led by Michael Kosfeld and Ernst Fehr, of the University of Zurich, suggests oxytocin is fundamental to trust.
Adblock
The scientists devised a game in which volunteers were split into two groups of "investors" and "trustees". The investors were given money with which to speculate and could spend it or pass it to a trustee. If they gave it to a trustee, the rewards would be greater, but only if the trustee agreed to hand back part of the proceeds.
When the investors were given oxytocin to sniff, they were significantly more trusting than when given a placebo. Forty-five per cent of the oxytocin group showed maximum trust levels, compared with just 21 per cent of those who sniffed the placebo.
Oxytocin did not affect the behaviour of the trustees -- their decision about whether to hand back any money was not based on trust.
To rule out the possibility that oxytocin merely made investors more optimistic, rather than more trusting, the experiment was repeated with money being invested via a random computer game, rather than with a real person. In these circumstances, oxytocin inhalation had no effect.
Dr Fehr, whose results were published in the journal Nature yesterday, said: "It is clear oxytocin changes behaviour, causing a substantial increase in trust. I believe that in the medium to long term this could have clinical applications.
"The main hope is that it can help people with pathologically low trust levels, such as autistic children or adults, or people with social phobias."
Dr Fehr admitted there was potential for abuse, but said oxytocin would be very difficult to deliver surreptitiously in useful doses. "It has a half-life of just two to three minutes, so you would have to spray it permanently like a fog to have an effect."

Been on top of the world since about six months ago,
Marking the first time I laid eyes on you.
I lost all train of thought as I entered the room,
Saw what looked like really good food then I saw you and so did you.
I wanna wake up naked next to you,
Kissing the curve in your clavicle.
Kissing your clavicle.
Been on top of the world since about 1 week ago,
Marking a time when I was drunk enough to talk to you.
I lost all train of thought as your eyes met mine,
Told you I thought you were gorgeous, you gave me your phone number I gave you mine.
Before you left I said that you can bet I'll be bothering you soon
You said "No bother, please do"
I've called you twice
It's been a hellish fight to not think about you all the time
Sitting around waiting for your call
I wanna wake up naked next to you,
Kissing the curve in your clavicle.
Kissing your clavicle.
I wanna wake up naked next to you,
Kissing the curve in your clavicle.

I've always thought that people are attracted to those that have the desirable qualities that they themselves lack
Hmmmmmm, the only desireable qualities that I lack are boobs and multiple orgasms, so that makes sense.

The chemical reaction is the consequence of love, not its cause, let us bear in mind that love makes sex enjoyable only with one's beloved, while sesual arousing can happen only with the right dose of hormones.
Maria
you really have a warped perspective on life o_O
ibid, i think youve got it wrong too, people naturally seek out the best specimin, and if that one is taken, they go for the next one down. humans are more carnal than we like to admit, but basically, it boils down to the fact that both men and women can sense good and bad characteristics in the other, and they only move forward if theres mutual gain.
