I am attempting to do a poetry unit focusing on American Lit themes and using song lyrics as the poetry. I use a few Offspring songs but I want to try to create libraries of songs that fit music genres so that each student can pick the genre of their choice. I am not musically inclined so I was hoping that you could help me out by suggesting specific songs from other bands of similar quality to the Offspring, that fit in rock or punk genre and that follow any of the following themes:
the American Dream
loss of innocence
coming of age
relationship with nature
relationship with society
relationship with science
alienation and isolation
survival of the fittest
disillusionment
rebellion and protest
Sounds like homework doesn't it? But if you could help me out with specific songs that you think bear relation to those themes, I would appreciate it. An example of ways I use the songs to illustrate themes would be Kids Aren't Allright=American Dream (destruction thereof) and disillusionment; Come Out and Play=relationship with society; Pretty Fly=Alienation and isolation (as manifested by the desire to blend)
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Thanks to both of you for the song and the possibility! I liked the lyrics to Bat, hope the music is good to.

Always good stuff to relate what's happening in the classroom to your students' lives and interests. What age levels are you teaching?

Goddess,
I am teaching a group of 16 year olds. I am a teacher for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, and up til now I have taught primarily Deaf so a music lesson didn't really fit their interests. :) I finally have a group of HH students so I figured I'd give it a whirl and see how it goes.

Sounds challenging and like a good idea. I've been thinking about what to recommend to you but I'm not really that up to date with what most 16 year olds listen to these days. But I guess I'd try some Green Day or maybe Linkin Park (God, I crack myself up). Maybe browse through their latest singles/lyrics. I can't give you any song in particular since I myself don't listen to those bands. Good luck.

Oh Jesus, stop this. It's not about if you like Green Day. I don't like Green Day either, so what? And I can't stand Linkin Park, so what?. Music is a question of personal preference. But when you're planning a lesson you have to go for what the majority of your students will like and that's why I recommended it. You understand nothing about teaching or common sense. And it's not like she will have lyrics from these bands only. Everyone will be able to choose what they like best from what I understood. So kindly quit your whining.

Yeah, the latest Green Day CD (American Idiot) should be a treasure trove of applicable lyrics.
