Indeed, Weezer's blue album is unbelievably overrated. I like it quite much, but it's still quite overrated.

As much as I want to sex BREAK for his incredibly awesome last few posts in this thread, I still want to officially flip him the bird for including The Strokes on that list. Fuck. Ing. HELL, they need to die, repeatedly and painfully.

Some albums that I think are very good (a lot were mentionned by Break and/or others)

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
Sleater-Kinney - One Beat
Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Love Bad News
Alanis Morrissette - Jagged Little Pill
The New Pornographers - Mass Romantic
The Vindictives - The Many Moods of the Vindictives
The Weakerthans - Reconstruction Site

I still think the Offspring are pretty fantastic however.

Definitely Fleetwood Mac, but Modest Mouse? No fucking way.

Betty
10-04-2005, 02:04 AM
These aren't my "greatest albums ever" cause then I wouldn't include Modest Mouse, or a lot of the others, but really, in comparison with some of Jake's totally random choices, I think it's fair. Rumours is definitely on the best ever list though.

When I first listened to Good News... I had heard all these negative opinions about the CD... so I was prepared for the worst, but as it turns out I really enjoy it.

I agree with a lot of this, but:

This should never be put on any list without the title "WORST FUCKING ALBUMS/BANDS EVER".

The Strokes are probably the only modern 'retro' band I actually like. They're song-writing isn't quite as derivative and retro as it sounds. While there is a good deal of older influences, it's mostly just muddled by the retro production. You can't listen to a Strokes song and say "Hey, this song sounds identical to something (insert band-name here) would've written" but you can listen to someone like Jet and go "this sounds identical to Iggy Pop and AC/DC" or the Vines and go "each song on this album sounds identical to some other brit-rock band from the 60s/70s". The Strokes are really no more retro than bands like Soundgarden (with all their Zeppelin influence) and early Pearl Jam (with all their 70s era Aerosmith influence) were in the early 90s. Plus their first album was just so friggen catchy that I don't really care either way.

bd007h, shut the fuck up. I hate Weezer and every last one of their fans.

I'll admit to still having the Offspring as my favorite band and loving almost all of their stuff. However, when it comes to good albums that can rival or beat The Offsprings', a few come to mind.

Chevelle - This Type Of Thinking (Could Do Us In)
Muse - Origin Of Symmetry
Kyo - 300 Lesions
Swordfish - The Album
Flashlight Brown - My Degeneration
Papa Roach - Infest

Whatever - this tires me out. All great albums, though.

I'm not gonna stick to the one album per band rule

Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium
Mr. Bungle - Disco Volante; California
ATDI - In/Casino/Out; Vaya; Relationship of Command
Minus the Bear - Everything except maybe their first EP
Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity
Blood Brothers - Burn, Piano Island, Burn
Blind Melon - Soup; Nico (even though half of it's only 'meh', the good half is great)
Cursive - Domestica; Burst and Bloom
Dismemberment Plan - Change
Flaming Lips - Clouds Taste Metallic, Transmissions from the Satellite Heart
Guster - Keep It Together, plus a mix cd of the best songs from their first 3 albums
Isis - Panopticon
Jets to Brazil - Orange Rhyming Dictionary; maybe Four Cornered Night as well
New Pornographers - everything
The Notwist - Neon Golden
Pearl Jam - pretty much everything after Vs except for Binaural
Presidents - Freaked out and Small
Primus - Frizzle Fry, Sailing the Seas of Cheese, Pork Soda, Tales from the Punchbowl
Queens of the Stoneage - Rated R; Songs for the Deaf; Lullabies to Paralyze
Radiohead - Ok Computer; Amnesiac; half of Kid A
Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come
Sleater Kinney - All Hands on the Bad One
The Vandals - Live Fast Diarrhea (the rest of their catalog could disappear off the face of the earth so long as I could still listen to this album)
System of a Down - s/t and Steal this Album
Unwritten Law - Elva
Tomahawk - both albums. I'm the only person in the world that likes their first more than their second.
Weezer - Pinkerton
Outkast - Aquemeni; 1/2 of Stankonia (This would have made one of the greatest 30-40 minute albums ever, but they threw too many shitty songs on it)
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Shake the Sheets
Devo - Are we not Men? We are DEVO!
The Cardigans - Life

coke_dude:
The point of this list really wasn't to point out how many things pwn the Offspring, it's just to open other, less fortunate people's eyes to the possibility that yes, there is a lot of good music out there that you've never heard because you suck. Hell, my list barely even scratches the surface of good music. There's a whole lot of lesser-known stuff out there. Deal with it.

Probably because those albums aren't very good.

Those who still think The Offspring is the best music ever produced on this Earth probably just haven't heard enough bands.

That said, BREAK, you're not proving anything.

It's alll relative, but I think few of those can be compared regardless... as they're completely different styles.

I don't know why I even bother saying this.

Woo, let's compare Bach to Metallica...

Why it couldn't be the best for some people? How do you define "the best"? Why The Offspring couldn't be the best? Does "the best" mean the same to everyone? Tell me, bacause I think that's very childishly said.

I really like probably a little more than half of Josh's list and a little less than half of Jake's. But both list a lot of really good stuff.

My list wasn't very long since I didn't want to repeat everything. And I didn't include things that I think are really good, just not fantastic.

And London Calling IS one of the best albums ever.

^Yep. Love Rhymes With Hideous Car Wreck is catchy as hell, but the rest of the album wasn't as strong. Man, I've been addicted to that song lately.

Have you heard March On Electric Children or This Adultery Is Ripe? Those both seem a lot more geared to your tastes than their last 2 albums. Hell, you might even be one of those weird people who think Rumors Laid Waste is their best material. Aren't you?

i've listened to those three a couple times, but i feel they lack as much style as piano island. the older stuff is all fine and dandy, but it doesn't seem as defined as burn piano island burn. and crimes sounds good and although i don't think it has any particular faults it just isn't as strong as the previous.

Who gives a shit, ABBA fucking owns.

Too many of the people on this forum refuse to listen to anything that's not in a similar genre to the offspring - they're elitists in probably the most oxymoronic sense of the word ever.

They're just missing out on a lot of great music. And by a lot, I mean pretty much all of it.

Including The Eurythmics and Blondie.

If you're going to mention a Social Distortion album, you should've mentioned "White Light, White Heat, White Trash." I think that might be better than anything Offspring has ever then, but I wouldn't say that about Moomy's Little Monster.
