Something positive to look at for once. Everyone in Canada complains about this country, I don't think they realize how good they actually live. And of course, I'm expecting some reaction to this post. I hope.

Vancouver is the world's best place to live, according to a survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

TORONTO -- Vancouver is the world's most 'liveable' place, according to a recent survey, while Toronto and Calgary were ranked No. 9 and 10 respectively on the list.

The Economist Intelligence Unit said its 'liveability ranking,' part of the Worldwide Cost of Living Survey, assesses living conditions in 127 cities around the world by looking at nearly 40 individual indicators grouped into five categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

With a low crime rate, little threat from instability or terrorism and a highly developed infrastructure, the survey said that Canada has the most liveable destinations in the world.

With a rating of just 1 per cent, as a result of a small threat from petty crime, Vancouver is the highest ranked city. Montreal also scored high on the list, at No. 16.

At the other end of the table were Port Moresby, the dilapidated, crime-ridden capital of Papua, New Guinea, and Algiers in Algeria.

Overall, the vast majority of attractive destinations were in Canada, Australia and Western Europe.

"Enough said."

"Terrorism" is a category now in how livable a place is?

Toronto ranks 9th? The survey is obviously flawed.

Yeah, risk of terrorism as a factor was also something that caught my idea. And really makes me question the survey in general.

I don't get what you mean by "Poor Mans America" so I don't take offence to it. It seems idiotic. Only someone from England could come up with such a retarded phrase.

I welcome your comments, but this is not the first time I have seen something like this printed in an article. I saw something like this last year aswell where Vancouver was rated #1 place to live.

And why is risk of terrorism such a bad catagory? I guess no one here cares about safety?

Also, a former prof told the class that Toronto is the biggest-safest city in North America. Its not thard hard to believe...#9.

Toronto is definitely an extremely safe city for the most part - but you can still get mugged, shot, etc. in certain parts of it. It's safe for North America, and for a big city.

That said, I don't find it hard to believe that Toronto ranked well. Or Australia.

But where's Norway?

And especially - where the fuck is Tokyo?

Italia311
10-04-2005, 04:24 PM
Funny you ask.

Tokyo, at No. 17, was ranked the best city to live in Asia. Other top-ranking Asian cities included Hong Kong, Seoul and Taipei.

I forgot to include that. Sorry folks. I did provide a link though...

Strange - Tokyo is beyond any doubt better than Toronto.

Less crime, better transit system... less affordable but what can you do?

Tokyo is considered by many as the most expensive city in the world, and this probably doesn't make a good case for it as far as living is concerned.

"Canada is too cold for me, period."

It doesn't even snow in Vancouver. Its not as cold as the rest of the country. Besides, the cold isn't that bad.

Better education? Why are they all at my school then?

"By poormans america I mean its just like the usa only shit."

Ahh, have a house in Italy. It's different there. More relaxed, and the weather is better. It's something I must do, and if I don't then well, I'll regret it, forever and ever.

She is smart for erasing japan from the list. I mean, you can come here to Niagara Falls, to the house of 10,000 budha's if you really wanna see that shit ya know? Some bigass budhist temple. Its crazy. You can kil 2 birds with one stone in a single trip. Besides Canada is fucking huge thats not the only thing to see. Trust me.

Yeah, no offense, but having been to both places - go to Japan. It'll cost more, but it's absolutely worth it. Japan fucking owns.

Canada? Well, it's hardly a bad place, and slightly more affordable, but it's just not Japan.

Rancid_Guyxxx
10-08-2005, 01:55 PM
I can see your point. But I think that is because you live in Canada, and you are only visiting Japan. So you are seeing a totally different lifestyle and everything is different. I think if you lived in Japan, and came to Canada for a visit you could very well say the same thing, because, well you see the same things everyday in the country you live in, then when you go somewhere else you are experiencing something new. It's a bit like a friend I have that lives in cottage country, and he loves it when he comes down to the city, then for me, I live in the city and I love it when I go up to his cottage up north. See my point? Maybe it's just me.

talk about japan... cool. I lived there for 3.5 years as well. tokyo is fantastic. if I could go anywhere in the world right now it would be tokyo. trust me, so much fun. karaoke booths, cheap convenience store alcohol, amazing shops, millions of small live music venues, lots of great places to eat and the japanese people are really cool. I want to live in asia again. might be quite difficult though. I'd have to learn a language first and languages aren't exactly my strength.

anyway, summary: go to japan, not canada.

K the topic was about Vancouver being the #1 city to live in. Now we're on Japan which was at like #17. So since this has now gone off topic, I think it should be closed.

I'm surprised Canada's so high on the list. It is in general poormans America. You may ask why? Simple reason socialism.. that and they have given up most of their rights trying to protect "mother nature" which is a laughable cause considering we have very little if any effect on Global climate. You may say ohhh but look at the recent hurricanes and earthquakes nikako.. and in that case I tell you too look at history you will see that we have had very few deadly or major hurricanes in the last few years compared to the early 20th century(MUST HAVE BEEN ALL THE CARS THEY WERE DRIVING!!). Also Canada has a poor healthcare system.. you may say but they get theirs for free, and yes thats true but the quality is very poor. If you rely on the government for anything you will get very little and very poor quality. Canada is the goal for most of our liberal members of congress.. and so we move towards it when in reality we would be better off without social security(Private retirement funds would allow you to retire earlier and with more money), strict gun controls (Washington D.C. has the worst crime rate and the strictest gun laws), and other forms of social suicide. In 1998 (I think I'm not sure if thats the correct year) Torronto and Quebec were voting on seceding from the rest of Canada, in turn the rest of Canada was debating on applying for statehood in the US, democrats however were adamantly against it because most of Canada (Geographicly) is against socialism and its gifts of socio-demographic death. However, Toronto and Quebec never seceded and so it was never brought to the attention of most American citizens.

Italia311
10-13-2005, 05:49 PM
Nikako...I have never heard of that. Toronto and Quebec "secededing?" The rest of Canada applying for statehood? Where are u getting your news? Show me an article backing this up. Seriously. It seems rediculous. If it was true, it would be all over papers.

I haven't been into politics since recently taking it in university. But since studying politics and following it in the news as much as possible (seeing as I am a Geography major its not on the top of my list of things to do) I find myself being a liberal. I like the way this country is run. I don't find anything wrong with social security. Private retirement funds? People have that. Who is stoping someone from investing into RRSP funds? or Mutual funds? Social security doesn't stop people from making investments. If it does, then people are stupid.

As far as healthcare. MEH. I like the fact that there is public healthcare, but I do think that if you have the money to pay for healthcare, you should pay for it. If it means better "service" then do it up. No complaints here. I haven't been to see a doctor in over a year.

I guess, if you just read the article, it gives you reasons why Vancouver and Canada are so high on the list. This article seems to be from and independant source so why not give it the benefit of the doubt? These people are professionals, they wont just make it up. If you can find an article that says otherwise, then lets see it. All I know is that, what I have here, is better then what the rest of my family has in Italy. And thats a FACT. So lets see an article saying there is another #1 city.

I believe Canada is a good country and I've shown and article to prove it. I don't know what else to say from this point on. Politics aside. There are things I hate about this place, for example. WINTER. But I still like it here.

Thats true Italia but Italy's is the fastest dying country in Europe right now, with a child birth rate of .5 (may be a little off).
Its not that they are forcing people to do it with laws and such, but they are misrepresenting the truth, the media makes it seem (as do politicians) that you must have social security that it is this great almighty system when its not. I also would like lower taxes as I'm sure most everyone would and getting rid of an outdated social welfare program would lower the taxes, and thats also why I say Canada can keep its government control over the medical proffesion.(As for that article I'm on fall break now should have that next week and if I can't find it I'll retract that)

Italia311
10-14-2005, 07:27 AM
I do realise the declining birthrate in Italy. But still.

I understand what you're saying with the social welfare program although I dont believe it should cancelled entirely. There are people that actually need assistance and there are people who abuse the system, its all a matter of where to draw the line.

I'm sure this article was released as a promotion for population growth in Canada, i.e., Immigrants. Someone reading this article would definently consider Canada. Healthcare and Social programs. It matters.
