It was in a language arts book. They also talked about cheating and sex.

you can't be in sixth grade, aren't you only ten?
Anyway, when I was in high school, I had the class called "Formation Personnelle et Sociale" which you can probably figure out what it means. This class comprised of several subjects including sexuality. My first FPS class was in Secondary 1 ( or seventh grade if you prefer, so there is not a big difference). The teacher talked to us about abortions, sex, STD, etc. I think it was a good class, but the government decided to remove those classes (starting now if I'm not mistaken), so no one in Quebec's high schools will have them anymore.
I think it is appropriate, because some parents don't talk to their children about sexuality for several reasons and since people have sex younger and younger, it's probably a good thing to talk about it.

I was ten in the sixth grade, too.

You know what a pregnancy is right? Why shouldn't you know what an abortion is then?
- WCM & Tizz
To be honest, I think it's important to establish some basic facts about human sexuality early on. Otherwise kids will get things confused, like you can't get a VD from anal sex or oral sex or get pregnant when you lose your virginity. Lack of sex education is probably the biggest reason to America being the promised land of teenage pregancies.

Of course. Why wouldn't it be?

Because it is a sixth grade language arts book. I don't think it is appropriate because they use it in as many sentences as possible when giving examples of things and I find it hard to believe that they did not at least tell us.

All of my male friends are 17 or older and some of them still doesn't know anything about menstruation. That's why most of the people in Turkey are virgins.

Knowing where to stick it is important, indeed. It's also not difficult to find even if you've never done it before, but I suppose going over the theory of it all can't hurt.

yeah but still, parents can get really pissed because of that. Last year, in art class, there was this art book and like, you know that famous sculpture of that naked dude? Well, like, they put like a post it over the dude's penis in the book and parents still got pissed because of even showing the picture even though the damn sculpture's part was covered up. Did that make sense?

That's some serious over reaction. I think its ok to talk about that sort of stuff on the 6th grade, cause kids these days are having sex at very young ages. So young in fact, that they're usually not fully aware of all the possible consequences and how to avoid them. 6th grade sounds like a proper enough time to start the whole subject, but you gotta be careful how you approach it, so as to avoid lawsuits.

Just looking at the title of the thread, one might think this is a discussion about "The sexual views and opinions of your textbooks" or possible " Text book Molesters: Is it right, am I gay if I rape my Science Book?"

See, the entire parental disapproval thing is ridiculous. And people automatically throw around the word "sue". It's just sad - how do they want their children to learn? With some random person, drunk out of their minds, nearing 3AM and they figure "Hell, why don't I find out now?" If children don't learn about the dangers of STDs and conception (I'd put it under STDs, but yeah) then they could very easily end up like that. Much better to break them into, if not necessarily a graphic course, the concept that there is a danger there - early.

Okay, things like that have no place in a language-arts/grammar book.
Now, when it comes to sex-education:
As soon as puberty hits (or right around the age of 11 or 12), kids should be taught everything there is to know about sex, pregnancy, and STD prevention. The basics are okay starting at age 9 but by the time they start high school they should know what the parts of the reproductive system are (both male and female), the stages of pregnancy, the different types of contraceptives that are available (and how to use them and where to get them), how STDs spread, their symptoms, prevention, and treatments available, "alternative" sexual behavior (oral, anal, homosexuality, bisexuality, transsexuality), and possibly even the abortion procedures available.
Arm the kids with knowledge, not fear.

I know seriously, my cousin got married and pregnant at 16. She dropped out of school 2 months after she got married, now she has 2 children, her husband beats her, she has no job so she depends on him for money(that's why she lets him beat her), and they live on welfare, oh yeah, and her husband did underage drinking.

Kids hit puberty too early these days. I think 10 is a really appropriate age to be given all the necessary information. Basically everything that leo mentioned. Maybe kids don't talk about these issues at home with their parents but they find out from peers. The 7-9 year olds I currently teach already claim they watch porn. Because it's cool and forbidden, of course. When we're drawing, they're drawing penises and naked people instead and think it's extremely funny. Like, everything has to have a 'dick, balls and titties'. Boys do it, girls do it, it doesn't matter.

They told us about sex and stuff in 4th grade no lie. They did seperate the classes though. The girls would learn one day, the boys would the next, as to not make anyone gender embarrased in front of the other. I learned what it was in 3rd grade by kids who knew older kids(kind of hard to remember what its like not knowing why you get erections lol), but the school didn't break it to us until 4th grade.
