Aesthetically it makes sense, because you read from left to right so it slants in the direction that you're reading, thus giving the text a sense of urgency.

Nice answer. I wonder if other countries that read right to left have italics inverse to ours.

Letters can slant the other way, I'm not sure what it's called though. Maybe still italics, for all I know? Although according to Maria, that's untrue?
