I want RXP to read this thread and prove my point in his attempt to defend himself.
Come out and face the peoples court, you gutless retard.
"I'm buff"
Ha buff = bulked plus ripped. I'm a skinny fuck plus ripped. I used to be buff but had a lot of fat on me therefore not ripped. I bulked to 135lbs from 105lbs which is quite something let me tell you. My lifts went up big time. However, currently I am ripped. I will start bulking again soon so the rippedness will go. Sorry ladies.
Also why do I have to defend myself? I agree with everything said.
I feel so flattered a thread was made about me. Awwwww. Cheers people.
Also here's my impression of BREAK:
Sunny said I'm hot! So did Nina! So did Sara! OMFG I'm hot!

Also it's pretty amazing how you all 'judge' be by my postings on this board. The people I 'care' about on the board really do know me and the fact of the matter is my best friend is a female. OMFG! The 2 people i'm closest to are female!
I think a lot of people don't realise people who post on a bbs do it for fun. I post serious stuff at other places rarely here. This place is mostly full of vets who stick together. It's tiresome. The thing I really like about the new board is the politics section with Sic, Wheelchair man, Betty keeping it alive.
And yes women are stupid cunts, but I believe that about most of the human race. It's just fun to take the piss out of women because all this PC men defend them like some fags. I like doing it.

The randomness was to emphasize the pointlessness of your capitalization. And everyone knows that all musical elitists always pick a few bands they find lame (such as Abba) and then say stuff like "I know it's lame, but I can't help but like them". It's even more elitist to do that. So hah! And anyone with any musical knowledge like the Beatles, except for stupid death metal fans and punks.

I'd say the Fall is less existentialist then the Stranger. Of course, it had existentialist themes, but it was filled with so many other themes as well.
I'll check out The Fall one of these days. I'll read Caligula next, after I finish Sartre's lecture. Why exactly did Camus and Sartre have a falling out?
SicN Twisted
12-16-2004, 10:18 PM
Many different reasons. I think it's because Sartre became so obsessive and narrow minded about existentialism that he couldn't cope with Camus not being an existentialist.
HornyPope
12-16-2004, 11:27 PM
They each split existentialism into slightly different groups. Sartre taught that will and liberty are notions acquired from your very birth -- "one is condemned to be free", he argued. Camus on the other hand believed that freedom is only attainable thru a fight with oneself -- one becomes free only when one understands that everything else is absurd and meaningless.
The difference in the two philosophies caused a major devision between the existentialism school of thought. But yeah, there's obviously more reasons which I ignore. I nevered looked into that much detail in their relationship per se.
SicN Twisted
12-17-2004, 12:01 AM
Camus's philosophy was not existentialism. This is widely misunderstood, because the Stranger was considered to define existentialism by many people. Camus was a writer who's books had philosphical messages that included existentialism, as well as many other ideas. He didn't consider himself an existentialist, which is one of the reasons he distanced himself from Sartre.

My european history teacher was unable to answer that question in high school... it seems like a very vague movement to me.
Betty
12-17-2004, 12:03 PM
I find existentialism fascinating. I agree it can seem vague though, probably partly because of the different interpretations. I'm not going to attempt to explain though, because I believe I might massacre it.
I read some Heidegger (popular existentialist German philosopher), and I wasn't overly impressed. It was very difficult to understand, and the parts that I think I did understand didn't really blow me away. Sometimes I feel that philosophers are just totally talking out of their ass, or maybe it's just too "deep" for me, I don't know.
HornyPope
12-17-2004, 02:17 PM
What a stupid assertion. Of course Camus was an existentialist. He might have been more than just an existentialist in that he didn't limit his philisophies to one school of thought, but he was deeply rooted in existentialism and there no denying that.
And existentialism is really not that vague. Unless you get into the details and try and examine everyone's particular approach, but the overal philosphy is relatively simple i'd say.
DirtyMagical

blah?
how did this topic go from RXP to imitations to existencialism?
SicN Twisted
12-17-2004, 03:01 PM
You obviously don't know too much about Camus. He publicly declared that he was not an existentialist. He was simply a writer who espoused many different philosphies in his writing. He may have been influenced by existentialism, but he was not part of any existentialist circle, and alot of his views lie in contrast with a whole lot of Being and Nothingness, the existentialist Bible. Existentialism is a specific philosphy, and calling Camus an existentialist you could just as easily call Kofka one.
HornyPope
12-17-2004, 03:49 PM
Funny. I didn't know he denied being an existentialist all together. That's fucking ridiculous however. The man's novels/plays were as close to existentialism as I came to understand.
SicN Twisted
12-17-2004, 06:02 PM
Camus was much more apathetic then the existentialists. Existentialists believed that each person was capable of fulfilling their own reletive sence of good and that was a humans purpose. He was influenced by existentialism, obviously through his friendship with Sartre, but existentialism was incredibly specific as a philosophy, and in some ways dogmatic, since it was invented by one man.
blah?
how did this topic go from RXP to imitations to existencialism?

Well now the impersonation thing is over, don't worry I'll get you next time around.
The rest of y'all, I'm planning on buying some Sartre this summer (visiting Eugene, a University city, so you can get philosophy books for a dollar), can anyone recommend me a specific book by him? or two? Something that does explain his philosophical viewpoint.
And the only length I ever got with existentialism, was to read Søren Kierkaard, which I still haven't finished yet.
His major philosophical work is Being and Nothingness, but I think it would be better to start out with Existentialism and Human Emotions, which is taken from a lecture he gave explaining existentialism and also defending it. His novel Nausea is also a good read and it explores his philosophy to a certain extent.
HornyPope
12-18-2004, 01:44 PM
Camus was much more apathetic then the existentialists.
That's true enough now that I think about it. I always thought this was part of the absurd.
Existentialists believed that each person was capable of fulfilling their own reletive sence of good and that was a humans purpose.
No way. Existentialists believe that humans have no goals to fulfill, nor is there a definition of 'good' per se, even if it relative. Existentialists think that humans will do whatever they choose to do for they are condemned to make their own choices. No more, no less.
As for Sartre, you gotta start with "No Exit". It's an easy read and will best introduce you to what to expect from him. Plus the quote "the hell is other people" ('l'enfer c'est les autres') is very memorable, if a bit over rated. I remember when Betty had it as her signature once haha. Also read The Devil and the Good Lord, it has some kick ass medieval characters and lots of slaughter. The book redifines the whole concept of good vs evil we humans came to understand. Nausea I found a bit boring and never quite finished it, and Being and Nothingness, i'm ashamed to admit, I never read at all. So there goes Jean Paul Sartre for you.
Nausea does have its boring moments, but I guess that's bound to happen when the climax of a book is when the main character stares at the roots of a chestnut tree. But I thought it explored some of Sartre's philosophical concepts pretty well, like facticity and the interactions between the being-for-itself and the being-in-itself. I forgot to mention No Exit. It was the second thing by him that I read. I think either of them will serve as a good introduction along with The Wall, which is about a prisoner about to be executed. I want to read The Devil and The Good Lord but I can't find it anywhere.

The Wall is my absolute favorite. No Exist is great too.
Being and Nothingness is his defining work of philosphy. What Vlad happened to miss was his belief in the reletive self fulfilling meaning of life.

I would understand how the existentialists argue that life is self fulfilling, but I can't quite imagine them coining a "meaning" to it. Do elaborate.

Basically, there is no general meaning of life, one person's perception are their own meaning of life. People bring meaning to their own lives.

I have a larger meaning then you though.

Alot of people think existentialism means "life is pointless." They're morons - it's not nihilism. It's not even that bleak when you think about it, it's just amoral, which was rare amongst philosphy at that time.

It is pointless. Just not useless.

Plus the quote "the hell is other people" ('l'enfer c'est les autres') is very memorable, if a bit over rated. I remember when Betty had it as her signature once haha.
Not sure if that's supposed to be good or not. Going to assume you're referring to me.
Either way, I'm PRETTY SURE I never had that as a signature. I generally don't have signatures. The only one I can ever remember having was:
"No time for the ol' in-out-in-out love, I'm just here to read the meter."

Shut up. I know you better than you do. Someone had signature and unless I can think of anyone else, it's gonna be you by default.
How about "can I rub your bum with a soap"? Was that not yours too? I remember the Clockwork Orange quote though.

I always thought Camus was an absurdist, not an existentialist. I also read that the falling out between the two was due to conflicting political ideologies.
On another note, has anyone read "The Outsider" by Colin Wilson?

Oh man, I think I have a stalker. I remember you used to always adress me by my full name, which was also stalkerish.
I suppose I generally remember little details about people, but that's VERY impressive. Wow...

He collects dossiers on all of us. I wouldn't be surprised if you see a big scary Russian at your door one of these days.
HP is an international spy. Why do you think he gets around so much?

I don't remember anything about hardly any of you.
That means you remember everything about most of us.
