Holy SHIT, this song is so great.
Don't you love it how you can automatically tell when a song was written by Dexter? I can't really articulate what it is about it, but every song written by Dexter for other bands (whether it be punk-rock, standard "rock" stuff, or something completely different like J-Pop) has that distinctive "Offspring" flavour. It's fucking rad! :)
Makes me wish we got to hear the song he wrote for Ozzy years ago. Argh, that could have been so classic.
Like...especially in the end of this when the drums kick in full-swing, that is just 100% Dexter, y'know? It's almost like one of the lighter songs off Conspiracy or Splinter.
This is better than any of the singles that came off the last two albums (well, three, if we're counting the Greatest Hits).
All-in-all, this is the best Offspring-related news we've had in 2006. This is better than knowing they've re-recorded Dirty Magic, this is better than knowing Dexter ran in some marathon, this is better than knowing that some sad bastard is going to pay hundreds of dollars for his sweaty shoes.
It may not be "punk rawkz, hardkor!" or whatever the cool kids look for these days, but this is honestly the best song he's written since Defy You came out. "Next To You" is my favourite recent release, but that's not his song. This has been stuck in my head all goddamn day.
 Mr. Holland, you've done it again. Rock on!

Tokyo, I'm on my way
In my brand new auto, it's not so far way
Tokyo, I'm on my way
I'm going to be in love
Tokyo, I'm on my way
In my brand new auto, it's not so far way
Tokyo, I'm on my way
I'm going to be in love
We're racing down the highway that's always on our mind
We're thinking about tomorrow and going back in time
Our final destination is really so sublime
It's home
Our hands are out the window, the miles are counting down
Just waiting for the moment when we get back in town
We'll meet up with our friend and we'll turn it upside down
It's home
Tokyo, I'm on my way
In my brand new auto, it's not so far way
Tokyo, I'm on my way
I'm going to be in love
We kick it with our friends and we scare our enemies
We're laughing at the world just like Thelma & Louise
The ones that cross our paths, well we'll bring them to their knees
Yeah so
No more sorrow, now it's on for me and you
We're together now we'll always make it through
All our cares are gone when we get back again
Oh yeah
Tokyo, I'm on my way
In my brand new auto, it's not so far way
Tokyo, I'm on my way
I'm going to be in love
Tokyo, I'm on my way
In my brand new auto, it's not so far way

You people are insane.
It's all in the structure, man. Simplified, effective. This song kicks the shit out of Can't Repeat, Hit That, and CGMHAY. I'm reluctant to say Spare Me The Details, because while I can't stand that track, it's just about perfectly written.
No way is it the worst track he's ever written. Not even worst single. I'd dare say it's the BEST since Million Miles Away and Defy You, if we're even counting the former as a true single.

personally, catchy does not equal good. There is nothing remotely clever, unique, or smart about this song. It sounds like it written with a "how to write a catchy pop song" guide.

i'd say 'how to write a catchy pop song 4 KIDS'
i think this song if written 4 the youngest music lovers, so there's no point in flaming it. it's not an offspring song, so there's nothing to be worried about. :)

Emily: I don't mean to come across like I know a lot. I think it's just because I state my opinions very straight forward, and I'm sarcastic a lot. I don't believe I know more than other people, you probably just take me too seriously :p

Don't know if someone said this already(couldn't be bothered to read all the 10 pages), but the song sounds a bit like "Don't pick it up" and "What happened to you?" and those song sound alike too.

Ok. Sorry to mention it again.
And yeah, there isn't much anything else that sounds like those songs.
But the lyrics sound a bit something that Dexter would write. Not meaning that he would write something about going to Tokio and being in love for them to play...but what he would write to some other band.....you know what I mean :)

Oh, go buy some rope and find a nice oak tree.
Look, we're Offspring fans, and this is the general Offspring board. This is pretty directly related to The Offspring. It's a slow news period in terms of the band's releases, no direct updates or tour journals to bitch about like we usually seem to do, so chill, alright?
It's an update, it's central to one of The Offspring's members, it's valid discussion.
Nobody is "obsessive" or in need of a shrink because they're appreciative of a song that doesn't fit the usual Offspring mould. Quit the stupidity.

Or maybe, just maybe, he's a fan and decided he'd enjoy writing a quality track for these young aspiring individuals?
Hmm?
Just maybe. Maybe he's not a complete retard such as yourself, and has an appreciation for a wider style of music than what your pointless elitism requires?
Fuck. I mean, just because he's a "pUnKz RaWKeRRR", doesn't mean he can't write a song for a J-Pop phenomenon.

It was poorly written, and an incredibly annoying song. I think it was some of Dexters Worst work and i'm glad he didn't make the band suffer and play it themselves. Even though it probably would've sounded better then two asian girls singing it.
Apathy
06-03-2006, 10:49 PM
I dunno. It's annoying, but I'm pretty sure that's just the voice.
Besides, If he would have written a song that was suitable for the offspring, it definately wouldn't sound right with the japanese chick.
Just imagine that voice doing Session or Out On Patrol Or something.
Creepy right? The song he wrote fits her genre nicely.

Explain.
It's impeccably written, you twat. Put forward just exactly what is written that's not up to your "standards".
It's a better-written song than most anything off Splinter aside from "The Noose" and "Lightning Rod".

06-04-2006, 03:52 AM
I think the song is very formulaic and generic. I can't find anything creative about it, or well-written... it *sounds* like something they wrote for two asian girls for pop tv... not something that was meant to be "well written".

It's far from perfect you troll. It's repetitive, annoying, and with those high voices it hurts my ears. Don't you think young aspiring japan artists can write their own lyrics?

QUOTE:
"It's repetitive, annoying, and with those high voices it hurts my ears."
So is "Come Out And Play". Just one example. And as for being "formulaic", it follows just about the same structure as every other Offspring single, so yeah. If it makes you feel better to bitch because it doesn't have buzz-saw guitars and crunchy basslines, whatever. Doesn't make it any less musically driven than anything else Dexter's written.

I tend to think most of the offspring's singles are pretty damn weak. Many of their songs are formulaic, and based on their song structures, I wouldn't like them. What makes them good are their lyrics, their passion, and the emotion. This song lacks ALL of those good qualities, and even removes all pieces of originality that still remains in offspring songs.
Venom Symbiote
06-05-2006, 12:04 AM
It's humour, in the vein of "Pretty Fly" or "Want You Bad" or whatever. It's purposely cheesy, not exactly meant to be emotional. It's not "Gone" Away for crying out loud, but then again, it's not meant to be.
Doesn't. Change. The fact. That. It's. A. Tightly-written. Track.
The lyrics serve the purpose, just like "Can't Repeat". They're not revolutionary, but they work well in the context. They complement the song.
It works.

1) what's funny about it? where's the sarcasm?
2) what makes it more tightly written than a blink 182 song, or a britney spears song?
3) the lyrics are awful with the song.

How can people hate this song!? Its addicting even with the annoying voices, the bridge is the best part... Dexter wrote this song perfectly for the people who are singing it. This shows to me Dexter's still got it sort of haha, after a dissapointing Splinter and "Cant Repeat", maybe the guys can put out one more great record...
Venom Symbiote
06-05-2006, 04:31 AM
There is no sarcasm, it's not sarcastic! The humour comes from the cheeseball factor, it's almost like some squeaky-clean Buddy Holly track or something. I realise most of the humour derived from Dexter is tongue-in-cheek and sarcastic, sure, that's granted, but that's not a strict summation of his range or creativity. The cheesiness has been utilised before, and is here to great effect.
Blink Songs ARE pretty tightly-written. I don't like them much, but they know their craft. The songs are basic, classic 3-chord progressions, but hell, they do it undeniably well. And as for Britney, for what they are they're pretty decent too. Although they're not exactly having anything to do with her...professional writing team and all.
How are the lyrics awful? What makes them any worse or more derivative than "Can't Repeat" or "Can't Get My Head Around You"?
They're not innovative or artful, but they're not intended to be. They're straight-up, cheesy, and joyous. All it's meant to be. It's a pop track, after all. And, as such, it's a fucking successful one. It works.
'Nuff said.

Everyone of your posts in this thread has been great, you're my new favourite member.
Futhermore, I wouldn't go as far as to say this is the best shit Dexter's written since Conspiracy of One or anything, but I do quite like the song. Everyone bashing the song needs to get over themselves and perhaps expand their tastes a bit outside of punk-pop stuff like The Offspring. This is cheesy but enjoyable bubblegum pop stuff.

Actually, another good song by Puffy is actually a cover of "She's Joining A Fanclub" by Jellyfish. I am going to see Puffy in Chicago tomorrow, so it will be fun hearing Tokyo, Im on my way. Here is some info on puffy.
Their music has been largely a collaboration between producer Tamio Okuda, American singer-songwriter Andy Sturmer, formerly of the band Jellyfish (who is referred to as the "godfather" of Puffy, for naming the band), and Ami and Yumi themselves.
