So every year on muchmusic Ed the Sock has a Special called "Fromage" where they play the worst videos of the year with his commentary.

I was watching some old videos tapes of mine a little while ago and I found an episode that I'd taped called "Fromge: Cruel Summer" where they were playing all the worst summer themed videos with Eds commentary and one of them was the Pretty Fly video. But he was saying how it was the only good video on the show, and that it was the kind of video you laugh with and not at.

I thought it was pretty funny, and since it only aired in Canada (as far as I know) I figured most of you had never seen it, so I typed up a transcript of it for you guys. I watched it a few times in a row and I'm typing it out of memory, so I'm not positive that it's 100% word for word, but it should be close enough.

Ed the Sock on "Pretty Fly"

Another prime example of a video you laughed with instead of laughed at is one of my all time favourite videos. From The Offspring comes one of the sharpest satires ever, not only of hip-hop videos, but also of the white wannabe culture that has grown up around them. This video is like "Hip-hop For Dummies". The dummies being the suburban, white, mall-rats who call each other "Holmes". This songs commentary is effective enough without my 2 cents worth, so pay close attention.

(Plays the first verse and chorus)

(During the scene were the girls are dancing next to Guy Cohens car) Enter the hoochie mamas, apparently picked up in bulk from Skank Depot. Sure, they're planted for laughs, but how different are they from actual hip-hop dancers?

(Shows a clip of some hip-hop dancers from a Jay Z video, comparing them to the dancers in the Pretty Fly video)

Yes, all the elements of hip-hop excess are here, lampooned for your pleasure, but it's not all joking around. In many ways you could consider this video a magnetic take version of Orwell's 1984, a cautionary tale that went unheeded, because sure, we all laughed at the concept of a skinny, white, middle-class, poser being taken seriously in black music, and then...

(Shows a short clip of Justin Timberlake in one of his videos)

I guess The Offspring were right. The world loves wannabes.

(Plays the final chorus of the song while cutting between clips of Guy Cohen dancing at the end of the video, and Justin Timberlake dancing in one of his videos and comparing the two)

Awesome. Thanks for sharing, really. You don't happen to be able to upload the video, would you?

cool. i always think of this kind of thing when people on this site say they hate this song. it's not meant to be a great "offspring-esque" song music-wise, it places its emphasis on the message (satirical commentary on society) through the lyrics and the video.

Really cool. Pretty Fly is one of the funniest videos I've ever seen. At least for me.

I really wish I could upload it, but I can't. I only have it on VHS so I have no way of uploading it. Sorry
