Guitar buzzing

I just a got a acoustic "Aria auditorium" guitar. I had a old classical nylon yamaha before. The problem is my new one is buzzing like a bitch whenever I play power chords. It's pissing me off. Am I playing too hard, or is there anything I can do to stop this?

Probably the frets. Have you had a guitar tech person go over it?

You could just be not pressing down enough.

Edit: On the frets. Trying pressing down hard with your fret hand, and using average strength with your pick hand.

If it don't work, the frets are probably too high, or the action is too high.

Wow, thanks AAE. That helps a lot. It'll take some time to get used to though since on my nylon string and electric guitar I was able to really pound down on the strings hard without any perseverance whatsoever.

Littlemiss: Yeah, the guy at the music store mentioned something about the action. With that, and the technique adjustment, I should be all set.


Thanks for all the help, people. Although being a pretty good guitarist for a someone playing for only one year, I know a little more than nothing about how a guitar works. I know the lingo, just not what any of it means.

Definatly sounds like the action is too high to me.
This is a classical guitar right?...what are you doing player powerchords on a classical?
Classical guitars are designed for finger picking and slide techniques, if you want an acoustic for playing powerchords you should have bought a steel string, the buzzing may be caused by trying to play powerchords on nylon strings.

if you don't want to take smaller frets you can also try to use thinner strings or a higher bridge (saddle).
