Carbondale gets the creeps

Film mixing horror, love marks debut for Topeka production company

A little bit Laguna Beach and a lot Stephen King, "The Key," a horror film being filmed in Carbondale, is adding some drama to Kansas' own OC -- Osage County.

"The movie is about a group of college students who come out to Carbondale to film a documentary," said Michelle Fridley who serves as the indy film's screenwriter, director and co-producer. "They sort of release part of hell, and then it kills everyone."

"No, just kidding."

Actually, Fridley isn't telling the end of the movie, which began filming Aug. 19 in an old Carbondale building on Main Street. She'll only hint at the synopsis.

"When they come out here, they realize this building has sort of a dark past in relation to the Mason Society. That's all I'll say," Fridley divulged. "Oh, and we kind of added the OC love triangle."

Evan Ghies, 17, holding a microphone, and Dustin Cross, cinematographer and producer, are working behind the scenes on "The Key." The film is part horror, part love story and is set to open Oct. 29, just in time for Halloween.

"We haven't had to deal with any drama," said Tabby Lester, one of the film's leads. "We get a long well so far."

Lester, 17, is one of the younger cast members. Most of the group is college-age, including a few Washburn University students, such as 21-year-old Marcus Miller. He said getting cast in "The Key," after attending the open auditions in July, is the first step toward his future.

"It's my dream to work in film," said Miller, a Shawnee Heights graduate. "What I want to do is move to California. This is just helping me put myself out there."

And though "The Key" won't be released to theaters nation-wide, Fridley said, upon completion, the film will definitely be put out there. She has plans to enter it in horror film festivals from Rhode Island to Hawaii, where she and co-producer Dusty Cross worked on a television show for several years.

For the Topeka area, the cast and crew of "The Key" have something much bigger planned for the release.

"We're going to have a big screening in Topeka with everything -- the red carpet, the limos," Fridley said. "We also have a big after-party planned at Jul's."

No location is planned for the opening, but Fridley said the date will be Oct. 29, just in time for Halloween. The opening also will serve as the kickoff for Fridley's new Topeka production company, T3V Productions, which will work on TV and films.

Lester said she knows audiences will appreciate "The Key."

"I think this film is going to be very successful," she said. "It's really going to get people's attention because no one has ever done anything like this in a small town in Kansas."

Actor Ryan Donigan, 17, left, and Marcus Miller, 22, rehearse their lines before filming a take in the movie "The Key," which is being filmed in Carbondale.

But does she believe in gates to hell or buildings with haunted pasts?

"I'm not saying no, and I'm not saying yes," Cook said.

Michelle Wishon, who plays the high society blonde in the film, said whether audiences believe or not, they will be scared and entertained by "The Key."

"I don't get scared very easy, but I think this will be very scary," Wishon said. "I would say it's a thriller with a lot of depth and some drama."

That's pretty cool. I don't think it will reach Europe, but should it, then I will check it out.

Cool. I'll have to see if it gets played anywhere around here.

That's so unlikely as to be almost impossible, but there is a decent chance that it could appear in a video store near you.

It might reach Europe. I'm sure they'll be trying to distribute it for European television.

Leave Kansas alone, bitch.

But yeah, I might move to Austin after next year. Apparently it's a pretty cool place for independent films.

I'm sobbing, Richard.

I don't know why, don't make me explain.

EDIT - Seriously, this is such a stupid thing to comment on, I have no idea why I did.

Doesn't sound like a film I'd like to see, honestly.

Fixed now.

And yeah, if I hadn't worked on it I wouldn't want to see it either, so don't worry. My projects will be better.

I don't have cable (which is the only possibility in Denmark for watching tv besides satellites.) So straight to DVD would've been better. It will be for sale though, right? Can you buy it online? Independant.

Oh yeah, it'll be for sale. At the very least you'll be able to buy it online, but I'm hoping they'll actually get a distributor. Having seen some of the complete crap that was sold by certain distributors, I'd say there's a very good possibility.

I'll make sure it rests nowhere near Starship Troopers 2.

You "recently finished working on it", but what exactly was your job? I'm guessing you're not an actor.

edit: Fuck you Tijs! That damn trailer... grr.

I was the assistant to the cinematographer. I helped with the camera and pretty much any random thing that needed doing, ranging from getting water to stopping traffic. I also helped out a bit with the story when they had a last minute rewrite. Actually, I came up with most of the ending, though until I see the finished product I don't know if I want to admit that I had any creative influence.

No, I'm not, although I did end up playing a small role. Very small.

The article mentioned something it maybe being played at horror film festivals, so there's always a chance it'll be at one of those.

Yeah, that's true. I should know more soon, there's a meeting later on tonight about marketing and such.
