THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.
He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.
He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that' is when it occured.
Mr Irwin's body was being flown to Cairns.
Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.
It is believed Mr Irwin's American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and has yet to be told of her husband's death.
Mr Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!".
The father of two's Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world on cable network Discovery.
He has also starred in movies and has developed the Australia Zoo wildlife park, north of Brisbane, which was started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin.
There you go. Sucks what happened.

people totally overlook the power of sting rays. They are dangerous things.
from a story of a guy getting attacked "Once aboard and seated, I lifted his leg to view the wound, and just above the edge of his tennis shoe near the ankle, blood pumped out of a dime-sized hole like water running from a wide-opened faucet."
http://www.jerrylabella.com/stingray/barb.jpg
"Never underestimate the penetrating ability of a stingray’s barb, even on the smallest of stingrays. The stingray’s barb is designed to penetrate virtually all sorts of dense materials, including wood and leather. And as unbelievable as it may seem, it’s been documented that large stingrays are able to drive a barb through a boat’s wooden planks or completely through a persons arm or leg."
"Aside from the pain and serious laceration caused by the razor-sharp barb, which can sever arteries and possibly an Achilles tendon, a poison is released that can produce a drastic decrease in blood pressure, increased pulse, dizziness and possible shock."
...and Jelly Fish get all the glory.

If the barb went through his chest and injected poison into his blood stream, I'm sure he died of a seizure of some sort, and would've died even if there was no poison.

deathstar, you're wrong. maybe only one death is common knowledge, but there have been way more than one death by sting ray. if you get hit pretty much anywhere in your torso, you're done. also people who get their achilles tendon hit (people step on them a lot) have very low survival rates.
It's just not a word I know in English, because that's not something you learn in school, or something you use very often.

In Colombia, health authorities register more than 2,000 cases of
freshwater stingray incidents annually. Over a five year period in one small local hospital
there were eight deaths, 23 amputations of lower limbs, and 114 other cases
where victims were unable to work. Veterinarians should be aware of these facts.

It's not really that ironic... if he was in an area to film such a show, that means there are a lot of deadly creatures around. If he's just chilling out, hanging with some coral, he's not gonna be paying attention to a sting ray. Normally, he's on the ball, paying attention to everything around him. Waves can be very very strong indeed, But woulnd most of the force generated by the wave slip past the barb insted of propelling it thru the water like an arrow.
What i'm trying to say is that a barb is very slim and it dosent have enough surface to be propeled.

If it was propelled by waves it could.
I doubt a wave could propell a stingray's barb through a human's heart. It had to be attached to a stingray.

AAE, if I'm swinging at your nose and you take a stray punch to the jaw, it's still connected to my arm. 'Stray barb' means they think the ray wasn't actually aiming at him.
And lamas, stingrays are only scary to faggot Americans and Europeans. We have blue-ringed octopi. Stonefish. Swimming abos. Sea cobras. Sea wasps. Irukandji. Saltwater crocodiles. Every type of shark imaginable.
You think anyone here gave a fuck about how deadly stingrays were until now? People will nervously avoid them for about five minutes, before casually ignoring them like we always did ; in order to try and avoid shit like motherfucking sharks trying to eat us.

Stuff like a mans heart? No. Short of a tidal wave, no.

It COULD but most likely it would only be strong enough pierce him a little bit, not go all the way into his chest and puncture his heart. Plus he was in shallow waters by the reef, I'd imagine it would have to be deeper and under much worse weather conditions for something like that to happen.

It's not really that ironic... if he was in an area to film such a show, that means there are a lot of deadly creatures around. If he's just chilling out, hanging with some coral, he's not gonna be paying attention to a sting ray. Normally, he's on the ball, paying attention to everything around him. It figures to me that he would die by an animal he wasn't paying attention to at the moment.
He was paying attention to it, he just swam too close to it. Read below.

Stingray Kills Famed 'Crocodile Hunter'
By BRIAN CASSEY
Associated Press Writer
CAIRNS, Australia (AP) -- Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and conservationist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.
Irwin was at Batt Reef, off the remote coast of northeastern Queensland state, shooting a segment for a series called "Ocean's Deadliest" when he swam too close to one of the animals, which have a poisonous barb on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said.
"He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat at the time.
Crew members aboard the boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead when they arrived a short time later, Stainton said.

I don't. I stay on land and watch out for tiger snakes, black snakes, coastal taipans, redback spiders, funnelwebs, white-tailed spiders, paralysis ticks, tarantula wasps, scorpions, cassowaries, non-swimming abos, goannas, wild pigs, etc.

Irwin died like a real man, yo!
Video footage of Steve Irwin's last moments shows the popular crocodile wrangler pulling out the stingray barb which ended his life, according to Irwin's producer.
John Stainton, producer and director on many of Irwin's projects, described the video as the worst thing he had ever seen.
"I have seen the footage and it's shocking," Mr Stainton told reporters in Cairns. "It's a very hard thing to watch because you're watching somebody die and it's terrible."
"It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up, and spiked him here [in the chest], and he pulled it out and the next minute he's gone. That was it. The cameraman had to shut down."

Oh, and here's the actual sting ray death stats.
This was only the third known fatality in Australian history from a stingray attack, and the first since 1945. As of 1996, only seventeen worldwide fatalities had been recorded, and it is believed to be the only fatal attack ever captured on film.

Do you really not understand this? Steve Irwin was a celebrity. Those other people aren't. It's really quite simple. People are sad because they feel like they knew him. No one gives a shit if somebody they never heard of died.
Are you implying that we should either be saddened by all death in the world or none at all? If so, that's rather ridiculous.

To be honest, the only two celebrity deaths I can really remember being deeply saddened about were Johnny Cash and Freddie Mercury.
All others just leave me vaguely saddened in a selfish way because they remind me of my own mortality.
In other words, I only really care if I was a big fan of that celebrity.

It's the way Steve Irwin died that makes this harder to take too. All deaths are sad, naturally, but let's say my friend is a surfer who drowns, or something. The fact that he knows all about animals and trusts animals, then dies because of one...that's the kind of thing that fucks with your head and your sense of general trust and logic.

The thing is that steve irwin had quite a positive impact on the world. He showed people a lot of things they didn't know about many creatures in the world, and probably helped people get over fears of things that they had before. He was one of a few scientist people who seemed genuinely good people who weren't corrupt, and did a lot of good for society. That's why people are sad about his death. Atleast, for me.

If you look at interviews he did explaining why he did that, it makes more sense: "If I could have my time again I would probably do things a little differently," he said. "But I would be considered a bad parent if I did not teach my children crocodile savvy because they live here. They live in crocodile territory ... so they have to be croc savvy." It co,es with having the crocodile hunter as a ather. It has nothing to do with being "brave."

I think he was really admirable actually. He made people care about animals through means other than the anthropomorphic "aww they're cute" way that most self-proclaimed "animal lovers" abide by. It's easy to make people care about pandas, baby seals, and dolphins, but Steve Irwin made people care about crocodiles, scorpions, snakes, and jellyfish. All of his stunts and enthusiasm forced people to see them the way that he saw them. He gave most of the money he made from his show to conservation efforts, and he ran the Australia Zoo. He was sort of a reminder that the world is theirs as much as it is ours.
