Yes, yesterday I was listening to my local classic rock radio station and Gone Away came on. I just thought that this was kinda cool and I figured I might as well share it with y'all.

What the hell? I mean, MAYBE something from Smash could qualify on a classic rock station, but Ixnay? I guess they just deemed Gone Away a classic. Much like the classic rock station here plays Californication by RHCP a lot. Gone Away does seem like an 80's song.

Clearly crap. Classic rock is affiliated with the 60's/70's.
Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Doors, Pink Floyd that kind of thing, Offspring are pretty far from classic rock.

DeAtHsTaR

Most classic rock stations play 80s stuff too. The one here plays some early 90s Metallica and grunge, and RHCP, but that's it past 80s.

this is really odd, offspring come on the "new rock alternative" regularly in my town, but of course they also play nirvana and such but classic rock, idon't think so

well, gone away is almost 10 years old, and most of the people who listen to the radio are teenagers....i think XD

With the state of rock music today?

The Offspring would be considered classic. Nobody is going to remember Panic At The Disco in 8 years, trust me on that.

It's different. Being "classic" isn't determined by age. After all, Guns N' Roses (original lineup) have been "classic" for years, and in the scheme of things they're still a fairly recent band.

Offspring is played on the local classic rock station all the time where I live. Radio stations don't always have to stick to their themes, they like to broadcast to a larger audience so they have to mix it up sometimes.

I also know a collection of cds of classic rock bands covers....the offspring were there, with nirvana, green day and others.....*bah?*

One day i call to one station and ask to play Offspring, they say - "it's not our theme", that i said, ok, put NOFX....and they piss me off :D

Here in El Paso we have a modern rock station that plays alternative and punk. COAP, Self Esteem, Gotta Get Away, All I Want, and- believe it or not- Next To You all get heavy airtime.

Gone Away is a great song, but it could be hardly defined as a rock song. Maybe All I Want would have fit better, but The Offspring isn`t a rock band...PUNK TO DEATH!!!!!!!!

leibstandarte109

In all honesty, I don't consider today's Offspring to be a punk band. Back in the good old days of ST, Ignition, and Smash, yes, they were punk. I would characterize them today as alternative with strong punk influences.

Not that it really matters, they still kick ass.

Most "classic rock" stations aren't really classic rock stations. They're usually just variety stations that rock music from whatever era they want, as long as it's not current. They don't have a strict definition on what classic rock is.

....and, as 4 me, i still can't understand why Gone away is a punk song...it's slow and about someone's death....hm...and i wonder who that dead person is

I agree.
Bands like Panic! and My Chem. are just fads and will wear away. But classic rock bands like Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd will live on forever. I think its a good thing The Offspring are being called classic.

But Gone away?? Why not Self-esteem?

I can't stand when people say that. Every single era of rock music since the beginning of the genre has had dozens of forgettable bands like Panic! At The Disco. It has nothing to do with the state of today's music. In the 50's, there were tons of rock 'n roll bands that no one remembers, same goes for half of the glam rock bands in the 70's, and half of the shitty "alternative" bands in the 90's.

The whole thing with popular music is that for every good, memorable band there's about 10 sound-alikes that no one will remember 10 years from then. It's always been that way, and it always will be.

lolz@u.

What I also meant to say was, what "classic rock" is really only depends on the people playing the song, running the station. You can have stuff from the early 70s, but also stuff from the mid 90s.

Slow down Venon. Don't worry.

I know that classic rock is like Black Sabbat, The Doors, Deep Purple, Scorpions...

For me, Offspring is a classic of punk rock. Then what is the problem in it be a classic rock? Midnight Oil is a classic rock? Maybe....

Relax man...you're too much stressed.

The difference is that the crappy bands today are huger than the good ones, and suck exponentially harder. In the past, there was a bit better balance between the two.

No there wasn't. In the mid 50's when rock 'n roll was at it's peak, the charts were filled with bands covering songs from other popular bands. In the early 90's, and shitty band that wore flannel become megastars and were plastered all over the radio. The only difference between the eras is that since you're a part of this one, you know it better than those other ones.

Though I don't agree, I can accept that. I would get into it more, but it's all really subjective anyway.

EDIT: Actually, we agree on everything except the part about it being different. This is what I'm saying: Throughout the past century, out of the uber popular bands, there were some good ones, and some bad ones. Now, it's the sucky bands that are taking over. There were always bad acts at the top before, but, these days, that proportion is much higher. I do think it is a phase, though.

I read the first page of the thread. The thing is, something that's classic doesn't have to be old, and it doesn't have to be from a particular style. You can have classic rock that's punk rock, metal rock, blues rock, pop rock, etc etc. To be classic, something has to be definitive, top quality, or always fashionable. Since these things are all qualitative opinions, nobody can agree on what music is and music isn't classic rock. Gone Away is a rock song, and 9 years after its release, people still recognize it and like it. The Offspring helped redefine punk in the mainstream, so by that, they are defnitive. I can very easily see it as being classic rock. Maybe it's not to the level of "Stairway to Heaven", but it still fits.

I just read the second page.

Meh... I've heard of weirder.

Yeah, I definitely can't see at all how that is classic rock, honestly.

I can't stand when people say that. Every single era of rock music since the beginning of the genre has had dozens of forgettable bands like Panic! At The Disco. It has nothing to do with the state of today's music. This is very, very true. Also, the standards for what becomes popular/is released suck now, so the good bands that are making music aren't noticed.

lolz@u.

What I also meant to say was, what "classic rock" is really only depends on the people playing the song, running the station. You can have stuff from the early 70s, but also stuff from the mid 90s.

Ah yeah. I clearly didn't read this before I posted. :)

You do realize that green day is currently POPULAR and offspring isn't, right? This would be why GD is played and offspring isn't. Seems pretty simple.
