...so the usual way for you is a barre version, and the new version is the open chord? In general, open chords almost always sound warmer and more resonant and awesome.

This is true, but B7 is just an open chord that I've been unaware of for a really, really long time. I don't know, there's something about the way the 3 low notes are played together that really makes me love the sound.

it's very dissonant and almost sinister. I love it and have been trying to find ways to use it with an E minor with the fretted notes up half a step. I really like how the bass note stays the same and the notes move down, but the chord itself is moving up.

EDIT: It's got a pretty ambiguous tonality, though the major second does add some majoriness.
