Yesterday, I was involved with a car accident. Long story short, I got distracted by a car fire down the road, ran a redlight, got hit by a repair van, and hit a display car at a dealership. (I personally can't help but chuckle at this part).

Anyway, I obviously got cited as the accident being my fault. The cop left something off of the ticket, because I was cooperative, and fairly shaken up, and he wanted to cut me a tiny bit of slack. I'm not sure what he left off, though.

I also have a speeding ticket on the record, and a citation for backing into someone, except that wasn't acted against because I didn't do any damage.

So my question is: what is the likelyhood of me losing my liscense, and for how long do you think? Anyone else go through anything similar?

Hahaha... that is a really sucky deal. I Sigged you though. To funny.

Why the hell would you sig that? Anyway. I'm still too young to have my liscense but I hope you don't get in any shit for that. Hopefully they take it easy on you. Losing your liscense would suck.

Is the law in the states the same as the UK for driving?

I.E points system, or totally different?

Jakebert
04-14-2007, 01:19 PM
I don't know. I'm not at all familiar with the U.S. system, let alone the UK one.

In the UK, you start off with 0 points on your licence. For each motoring offence you commit you get points. You are allowed a maximum of 12 points before you licence is taken away.

Minor offences, such as inferior speeding (over the speed limit, but not crazily speeding) can get 3 points.

Psycho 150mph speeding can grab you up to 6 points.

Driving under the influence etc you can get anywhere from 9-12 points.

We don't have anything like that, but I think there's a similar process of thinking when it comes to judging how long your license is gone, and ect. I know if I was under 18, it would have been revoked as soon as I talked to the cop. But since I'm over 18, I have no clue what's coming next.

goonadie1day
04-14-2007, 01:33 PM
You start out with like 12 points... and you lose points in accordance with what you do... i think the only automatic revocation is committing vehicular homicide. It just depends, how fast were you going when you got your original speeding ticket. Could be from 1 to 3 points assessed.

Then it depends of how many infractions you committed, etc. So really you could lose it, but if you explain you were distracted etc. You might get off a little easier. I feel bad for you.

Neither do i then.

It will depend on:

How old you are.
How long you have been driving.
The damage you caused.
Your previous convictions.
The cops statement on whether you acted like an ass, or it was a genuine mistake
How much of a tool the judge is.

I'd say it's highly doubtful that you'd lose your license. It may depend on the state, but in my experience you need three speeding tickets in three years in one state for them to threaten to take away your license. According to the Ohio insurance institutes's website (http://ohioinsurance.org/factbook/2003-04/chapter6/chapter6_g.shtml), running a red light is equal to a speeding ticket... and that you need to accumulate twelve points in two years before they take your license away. Sure, you caused an accident, but it was the result of an unintentional error, so you should be fine. Were I you, I'd most worry about insurance.

Definatley. You're insurance will go through the fucking roof.

Down here your license would already be history. Count yourself lucky. On every count.

But provided you can pay for them, you can do some license-internships that help you regain the points lost (12 points to a driving license). You look at vids, nod in approval, & listen to horror-stories about drunk driving etc. Very formative. My dad did some. Went ace.

Thats because the french drive little shitty cars. You gotta be a major asshole to cause damage in one of those shopping carts.

The italians have ferrari's. The odd one though. The germans have porche's, which aren't too bad. The french only have peugeot, though.

Shit, a car that runs would suit me. :D My mom totaled her Oldsmobile, so she ended up stealing my 'Ford Taurus' and shit, was a nice car for me! 2000, and i paid for it... now i hope i can get a new car paid off by the time i graduate!

I'm sure you'll have it before that, Maria. I seem to remember you started learning around the same time i did (last october?) and i have my test May 22nd. Wish me luck.

To goonie: Aaah, how fortunate you are not to live here. You don't know the brand of bastards we have to reckon with, we drivers-to-be. At 16 you can do accompanied driving, but only at 18 can you sit your license. They're real motherfuckers, the teeniest thing done wrong & it's a no-no.

I sat it some months ago - & shitted myself so badly, man. I hope to retake it by June... but given the heap of things on my plate, I have no clue whether I'll land it. Otherwise I'll have to retake it in October... my driving code which I obtained last year is valid for 2 years. If next year I still don't have my driving license, I will have to retake the code as well.

Did I mention the budget? Pretty expensive for a shitty shopping cart.

To Stevie: the eve of my birthday! My 20th bd! Sure, I wish you luck. Merde! (merde = good luck)

The only gadget for me will be the autoradio. *ace-thumb*

I'm heading to berth. Just gone back from my Easter hols in Lyon. Pretty tired. Nursing a crick & a backache - those bloody uncomfortable French trains. Damn them.

May the whole of the driving school confederation rot in hell. *last thought before falling to sleep*

I work in a Peugeot warehouse. It's amusing that both Citroen and Peugeot use the exact same parts for pretty much all models.

That being said, I know nothing about cars, I couldn't even tell you what a peugeot looks like. Other than boring, ordinary and small.

Duskygrin
04-14-2007, 02:59 PM
The brand is Peugeot-Citroën. No? I hear it mentioned as such a lot.

I get the idea that wasn't really your question. Did you mean that the different models should have different parts? Methinks it's pretty much standardized.

One can guess I know shitfuck about it. *shrugs*

& for pity's sake, leave off peugeot for a mo, you ppl are so fucking mean. Yes, it's small, small, small & drab. Got it.

No, Peugeot and Citroën are two different car manufacturing companies.

I didn't get the last sentence, too techy. I trust the wine tasted good. At Lyon my bar is filled with bottles of sundry gift spirits & potables. It's eye-candy. But I only drink champagne these days.

Update on the court situation: I was looking over my citation, and realized that even though the cop filled out the court date and time, and location, he forgot to check the little box that says "Requested for court appearance". Well, my mom called the courthouse, and they said I'm not scheduled for an appearance. So, I don't have to go to court all because the cop forgot to check a box. I <3 stupid cops.

If you're over 18 your insurance will probably just go up a lot. If you're under 18, good luck. Don't take my word for it though, i think that's just because of the graduated drivers license thing where you gotta be ticket and accident free for a year, but i've had friends who've been in several accidents while in high school and they got no legal trouble.

That's not too true, you can get banned straight away for speeding if the judge decides. Also if you get more than 6 points when you've been driving less than 2 years, you lose your licence anyways. I'm on my limit atm with 6 points :(.

Bazza

Yeah, in the UK anything over 100mph is an instant ban and court case (where you're given the opportunity to try and persuade the judge to let you keep your license to you can go to work etc.).

In December of 2006, I was written up for possesion of an open alcohol container in motor vehicle, and careless driving. The cop attempted to schedule my court date in January, but he wrote January 2006 (which had already passed) on the ticket. After reading your story, I wonder if I could've gotten out of it somehow.
