I read the headline "Poor weather gives space tourist extra day in orbit for free", and the only thing I could think is that this is putting an incredibly positive spin on some desperately homesick old man floating miles above our planet in a tin can, slowly realizing that he very well may die.

I guess it's still pretty good getting another day in space, I mean how much does a day in space cost??

The only thing that the headline implies to me is, the weather must be horrible in space. Why would my smart brain think that it's the weather on the earth? :p

I think the tourist would be nothing short of excited. I mean he wanted to be in space, and he got it. The weather doesn't affect him so he can't be scared or nervous because everything as far as technology goes is working fine. It just turned into a real exciting adventure.

frightning.
I rarely feel unsafe in an airplane & don't mind it a whole lot when there's some delay, because the thing can't land because of the weather. I don't mind turbulence either, not even when it toys with the plane & causes a rough flight, not as long every time the plane wobbles left & right it becomes stable again with the help of a good pilot.
with some airplanes & some pilots, though.. when the flight's been rough as it is in pretty mild weather.. & then it turns out it also can't land, because the weather is freaky.. I do mind it. but there's nothing I hate more than experiencing a rough landing with a huge hangover after excessive partying & one hour of sleep.:( before that, I had never been sick on a plane, ever.
almost wrote down series of unpleasant airtravel experiences, but never mind.

I'm not a huge fan of flying. Though it's statistically very safe it is unsettleing being ten miles in the sky with your life completely in the hands of a machine and 2 people you have never even met.
I've felt unsafe riding my bike more often than I've felt unsafe in a plane. dude, in traffic, your life's in the hands of almost every goddamn idiot with a driver's licence, that uses the same road. AND not to mention every single one of their machines, including your own.
the last time we couldn't land, because of bad weather, was mildly unsettling, though. we were circling above Amsterdam, together with at least four other planes. five planes in one piece of sky is mildly creepy, yes.

I know it sounds stupid when you look at it logically but something about being so high just makes me edgy, not so much that it would prevent me from flying again or anything, but i'd much rather be on a bike because you have more control yourself.
no, you appear to have more control. in fact, you are extremely vulnerable on a bike in traffic.

You're right... But don't think i'm going to stop being scared just because it's completely safe.

Massive flier here.
Most definitely far more afraid of airplanes than taking to the roads with a bike.

I've felt unsafe riding my bike more often than I've felt unsafe in a plane.I haven't felt unsafe biking, mainly because I'm always in control of the situation. Once, we were circling above Little Rock and tried to land three times but kept having to pull up due to inclement weather, then the pilot announced that we didn't have enough fuel to try another landing, so we were gonna have to book it to Missouri. A month later a dozen people died during an airplane crash in the middle of a storm at the same airport. I ain't never had anything like that happen to me whilst on a bike.

Wow. I agree with you about the bike thing. Biking and driving, I feel safer because I'm the one in main control. If something happens, it's pretty likely because I failed to see something. Yes, you're vulnerable on a bike, but if you personally do your best to pay attention to what's going on around you, you're rather unlikely to get in an accident. On top of that, especially if you're wearing a helmet, the chances of death upon accident is ridiculously low.
I feel more afraid riding in a car that's being driven by someone who's not me than I do when I'm driving or biking. That scares me almost as much as flying, but not quite.

I totally understand your point but statistically It is alot more likely that you'll get killed doing nothing wrong on a bike than being killed on a plane being flowen by professionals. I hear you're more likely to die from a champagne cork than a plane crash.

I'm scared if someone would have a bomb on my flight or something, or if terrorists took over. That's why I'm afraid of flying, not that turbulence and the pilot stuff. It gives me the creeps.

Yeah but I think that those statistics take morons into account who don't look where they're going, and don't wear helmets, and think cars should give them the right of way at all times.

a woman once deliberately hit me with her car, when I was riding my bike. I was crossing a street, she was driving on the side walk on the other side (I thought that was strange), we looked each other in the eye, I kind of stopped, because I thought she looked maniac-y, then suddenly she hits the gas like a mofo. maybe I was wearing the wrong shirt?
I've been hit by a car (by accident, of course) over three to five times, when it wasn't my fault. lights were green, car turned right & I didn't take a turn. one time some guy just drove into a very narrow street he wasn't allowed to drive in & hit not only me, but all six of my friends who were with me, aswell. it appeared he was drunk out of his mind. later on he was caught, after having hit several other people & a streetlight.
I've been almost hit by a bus, when it drove to the side for its stop without looking, when I was still between the bus & that particular stop. I had to stop & go backwards as fast as I could, scratching my shins open in the mean time on the pedals, & still it hit my front wheel so hard, I couldn't drive it anymore. when after it stopped I screamed angrily at the driver, he finally saw me & apologised with shock in his eyes.
I've been stuck between two trams, the police had to come to stop both & get me out. luckily they were nearby.
bus- & truckdrivers are sitting to high anyway to see everything; I heard about a 13 year old boy, the child of someone I met (his mother told me), who got under a truck with his bike the way I got into most accidents (truck took a turn to the right) & the driver didn't even notice it. someone had to stop him over by car to show him what happened & that he had just killed a little boy.
besides that, not everyone pays attention all the time in traffic. those moments of inattention can be fatal for anyone, also someone who was paying attention & who really didn't do anything wrong at all.

that's actually true, well, at least, I also heard that.
I've been in scary situations in planes, but the pilot always solved it, because it's his job & he's trained to keep a plane steady & to handle the thing during the most ridiculous circumstances. one time even the O2 masks came out. & in Saba for instance, you head straight towards the water during the lift off for a couple of moments. the track there is just real short & not long enough for a complete lift off, so the plane drives off the island at high speed, waits till it's free in the air & THEN pulls up. scary, but it always goes right.
Yeah but I think that those statistics take morons into account who don't look where they're going, and don't wear helmets, and think cars should give them the right of way at all times.
in the Netherlands everyone owns at least one bike, we're a biking nation & yet I personally know not one single person, who owns a helmet for biking, let alone uses a helmet while biking. I occasionally see someone with a helmet, but they're mainly people on mountainbikes, or whatever, biking at higher speeds.
I admit I'm a dreamer, at all times, so also in traffic. & there were times I should've watched out better, like for instance with the trams. I'd just moved to Amsterdam & I'm not used to the things. I come from a city/village with merely busses. but accidents with trams happen a lot here, if it's a biker, or a car, that really doesn't matter. & also to people who have lived here for all their lives. trams just never. ever. stop. they move at the push of a button, then it pretty much goes by itself, following the rails. tramdrivers often don't even notice what's happening in front of their own tram, until it's too late & a bike is under it.
the other accidents I described, in those situations there wasn't really much I could've done to prevent it from happening, or I should stop at every single crossroad, wait & see if someone's going to turn right without looking, but then the lights will be red again, before I get to cross the road. when the light turns green & I step on my bike & some car is heading towards the crossroad at high speed, sees he also has green light & just takes a turn to the right without looking, I can't anticipate.
I know more people who have died, driving a bike (3), than people who died in a planecrash (0). also; I know more people, who have broken bones, driving a bike (5; elbow, wrists, jaw, leg, backbone, last one being by a drunk driver), than people who got hurt on a plane (0).
you can say they were all in control & should've prevent it from happening, but you don't control traffic. you control you, that's all. you don't control if some driver is going to be drunk, you don't control if he's paying attention, or applies the rules in traffic correctly... you can maybe oversee traffic & the situation directly around you, but cars travel fast & you can't see everything coming.
I've never been afraid of flying, I love it and feel completely safe.
Oh yeah, I'm new here. A friend of ilovellamas. ;)
