I'm learning to play the guitar and i'm thinking of getting a Gibson SG. If not a Gibson, i want to get a Schecter. Which is better? Gibson, Schecter, Washburn, HALOs, or Fender?

Fenders are the most versatile of them, but Les Pauls can be used for many different genres, too. I have a Fat Strat, and it works perfectly for any kind of music I want to play.

Isn't a Fat Strat just a Fender Stratocaster with a humbucker closer to the bridge or something like that?

Yup. What kind of music are you looking to play?

Yeah, I'd go with a strat.
Which reminds me, I have to look into getting one myself.

Well, if you're just starting out, I wouldn't get a Gibson just yet. Get an Epiphone SG. They're cheap and have the same look, but are worse in quality, but who cares? You're just learning.
Speaking of Epiphone SG's, I'm buying one this week.

lol DIAF lol.
Really, who gets a fucking $1,000 guitar as their first instrument? My first guitar was an acoustic out of my uncle's attic. The fretboard was warped, the action was set at an extremely high level, there punctures in it... and I loved it.
Even now, 4 years later, my guitar is still a step below that.

My first guitar was really cheap, because of a sale. It's a quality guitar, but not some humongous expensive namebrand. My electric was also 40% list price.

Well some people, like me, really want something, and know that it is worth the investment. I learned how to play before i bought it.

That makes perfect sense. Obviously, the $1,000 guitar was necessary to learn how to play power chords, other guitars simply aren't built for that kind of true punk power. The fact that you wanted it is reason enough, I mean, people want things all the time, I suppose they should deserve them by desire alone.

anyway, I've got an acoustic guitar with iron strings. a Bruce Wallace, don't have a clue about the details. I was wondering, you can turn any guitar of reasonable quality into an electric monster, right?

For a first electric instrument, a Yamaha Pacifica 102/112, preferably the latter.

I love my Fender. It's so sleek, shiny, and sexy. But I find it more fun to play really cheap, fishing-pole-wire guitars because its easier. Plus, the worse it sounds, the more fun it is to play (for me). I love to experiment with sounds. Though if you want it crisp and beautiful, Fender ftw. It'll hurt though :(
Out of curiosity, does Les Paul make acoustics?

Les Pauls are made by Gibson.
But I just Googled it, and yeah, I guess they do.

Guitars generally suck. I'd start to play a different instrument if I were you. Triangle would be a good choice.

When I was in marching band in high school, some kid came up to me and said, "so, if you like, play the triangle, do you still have to wear one of those gay-ass uniforms?" I almost kicked his ass.
Anyway, I play guitar, and I agree that it's really not that great of an instrument. I've never really understood why it seems to be the most famous instrument.

My friend's just selling me his Schecter C-1 Classic. He says it has "Vine of Life inlay on the Fret Board. Seymore Duncan Humbuckers. Five Channel Switch. String thru body, tone pro's bridge, and sexy ass racing stripes on the back". (His exact words [AIM]) He wants to sell it to me for $700.
Since i know shit about guitars, is that a good deal?

Not for a used guitar, it isn't. At all.

That seems like a reasonable deal, those guitars are very nice.
On the guitar being an inferior instrument, its not.
EDIT: on looking at T's post, I realized I actually have no idea how much those cost at retail price. oops.

I think the best choice is to start playing the guitar with an acoustic one. It`s much more harder, but after playing it for 1 or 2 years, you pick up an electric one and the sound goes alone. Don`t start with Offspring songs...

Thats the guitar misconception that bugs me the most. The only advantage starting on an acoustic will give you is building calluses on your fingers a bit quicker.
It's totally a preference thing that makes no difference in the long run.

Agreed. My problem wasn't getting used to it or finger strength; it was coordination. I started on an electric about half a year after getting my acoustic, since it would be easier to get used to transitions that way and such. The electric helped me get better at acoustic a lot more than the other way around.

You're right, it is a nice guitar, but 700 is around a hundred dollars over the retail price, and it's just not worth it for a used guitar.

Wow. That's a cheap guitar. From the reviews, seems like it's a great guitar for beginners. Awesome. I'm going to have to check this one out.
Thanks.

Your welcome. I was at the Guitar Center today and my friend pointed it out and the red one (the picture is way dark) but the red one is stunning. I started messing with it and i was just blown away. I am actually of thinking about going back and getting it. It has a really nice sound, and the price blew me away. The frets (which is the only complaint i have about my fender) are really smooth and everything.
And as far as purchasing an amp and other accesories, i would do what i did, which is get that at a pawn shop. :P My amp cost 50 bucks and its great.

Yes. They had another one (http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_schecter_omen_6_electric_guitar?full_sku=10155 8112) there also a Schecter that i liked, but it didn't tickle my fancy. It was really pretty, but the frets and a little sharp on the edge... but i mean, it's the same thing with my fender.
