View Full Version : A brief rant on accusations of favoritism and 1337ness on this board.

as for the cliquesh or however you spell it thing.. it's true
Um, y'know how about a bajillion people have made this exact same comment at one point or another concerning the community of BBS users here? They say it for a billion different, invalid reasons, when the truth is they're usually just getting pwned so hard or are just so stupid that they're not taken seriously here, but those are just a few examples.
So many people say that the "1337" here protects one another all the time. They say that they only like "1337" people. They say that the "1337" calls other people stupid not because they truly are, but because they're not part of an exclusive club.
To some, it seems like a reasonable accusation...which is why it's too bad it has no basis in reality whatsoever.
Did it ever occur to you whining fucks that we get along because we're like minded, relatively intelligent people who contribute to funny and/or interesting discussion, and THAT'S where our connections come from? I could go on and list a number of examples, but it's late and I feel like I'm not making sense (which is why this is just a rant).
But seriously, if the 1337 was so biased, why do so many of us rip each other apart on a daily basis? You might say that the 1337 does it in a friendly way; my counterargument would be that it's not that we do it in a friendly way, it's that we're not a bunch of crying pieces of shit who shout out "1337, 133333333337 is unfair zomg" every time we're getting into it with someone.
Also, if this place really were so unfair and exclusive, would the following posters have been accepted so graciously? mrconeman, Jakebert, T-6005, PilZ-E, 0r4ng3, All About Eve, ilovellamas...and even JohnnyNemesis? I mean, my first interaction with mrconeman was a dumb argument in our forum and now he's one of my all time favotite members here.
I've made a similar thread before. The other one was better and more concise. This one is gonna get a bunch of justified "tl; dr" responses. But I had to get it off my chest.
Oh, and in advance: stop crying.

Ricky, don't take it so seriously. The list of supposed 1337 grows and shrinks every time someone picks a huge argument and finds they've hung themselves out to dry. OMFG no one is defending my insane arguments that means they are all a huge conspiracy!
Please tell me that Linda is being called one of the 1337 because she's been standing up to Mark. And I can't believe no one has noticed that Mark coming after me so hard and claiming it's self-defense has united the board! What up, Linda? It feels good not to be fighting.

Yes, that's probably occurred to some of them. Especially the ones who show eventual improvement because all along they just wanted to be like us. But I do feel some sympathy for them occasionally. It's not easy looking up to a group of people, wanting desperately to be like them and be acknowledged by them, only to be insulted at every turn.
Still, they really should stop crying.

The only point I was going to make was that its extremely clear to see that from the get go everyone is given a chance, and alot of people become accepted, but that was already made, so yeah.
Also it's totally natural and justified to have favoritism, to an extent I guess. I mean I can recall way back in the day when I only lurked the boards, some members were around way back when and made friends and have stayed friends all the way untill now, naturally they'll favor these members...and not new mods.

Actually no, people have more than one chance here. no_way, for example. My God, she was one of the most fucking annoying people I've ever known. Although she kept acting like a real idiot she had friends. People replied to her when she asked questions and helped her.
If you think you have no friend on this board or you are hated by everyone than you must reaaally suck.

It's hard to say usually whether or not people are given a chance right off the bat. I personally was immediately disliked, and a few people indicated that it was partially because I came from GOD. However, the number of good members who join compared with the number of losers who join, it's hard to give everyone a chance when chances are, you're wasting your time. You just have to prove you're a worthwhile member, and there's nothing wrong with that.
Also it's totally natural and justified to have favoritism, to an extent I guess. Right. It doesn't make sense when people say it's cliquey... when it's so natural to favor your friends. I'm sure that in real life, everyone favors their friends over some random dude. That's just how it goes.

I'd have to disagree Bri.
I don't actually remember when you joined. But I think many people have the view I do about how to treat people. It depends very much on reputation. And reputation is not a fast, set thing. In the very rare chance that you can join the General Chat regulars and be immediately accepted, means you have a minimal level of requirements. These things usually are based on how reasonably a person can explain themselves, how eloquent they can write (varies on what your nationality is), and how serious you take things. And just avoiding committing one of the many internet faux-pas'.
So when someone new comes. They have to wade through this swamp blindfolded. And they'll probably get called out when they make mistakes. But if your name is just a generally unknown name, you simply enter the background and people will ignore you or treat you somewhat brusquely. After a while most people establish themselves to a certain level of respect or leave. Jakebert, Coneman, Orange, no one really paid attention to them in the beginning. Now they've developed more in most eyes. People like F@ Bankz, and uh, Grabbal, are still very much in the background. But they will probably accepted too if they don't leave. Of course some losers never change, Lodat and Zagmeno for instance.
Of course if you get the reputation of being brain dead, or unreasonable, or a poor speller. These things will haunt you until you improve.
There is no favoritism, there is a complex social environment, with layers of members.
ZagmenO
04-19-2007, 02:26 PM
Of course some losers never change, Lodat and Zagmeno for instance.
I've went off on this tangent before, but I'll do it again. ZagmenO ain't changin' for no one. I really don't care if I have INTERNET BUDDI3Z or anything like that. Despite what some people have said, the 1337 or whatever you wanna call them are extremely cliquey. I can't read past one thread without seeing this kind of dialogue exchange:
LYKE, H3Y GUYZ!!! WATS UP!
OMFG!!! WIIIIIIIIN!!!!!!!
LOLOLOLOL!!!!! THAT WAS MILDLY FUNNY BUT I'LL LAUGH AS IF IT WERE HYSTERICAL!!!
I could go on forever with that, but I'll just get called out for "spamming" like people like to do to me. All it takes is to see a thread with more than 2 pages and read through it, and then you'll know what I' talkin' about.
I agree completely with WCM, but at the same time I'd like to point out that it can often be really difficult to change the view people have, based on one's reputation. Some people wont let loose when it comes to really, really old stuff. And it's not like people dont change.
This is why I also partly agree with Brianna. It's natural to favor friends, maybe, but it's also natural to dislike people who you've disliked at some point, for reasons that might not exist anymore because they have matured.
I feel like I'm going offtopic, meh.

zagmeno does speak the truth to an extent. What he may or may not realize is that the style in which we respond to each other is as such out of jest. If you remain a part of any internet community for at least some period of time, I find that talking like an internet retard becomes a joke among respected community members. I can't believe I just explained that.
Favoritism, "complex social structure", or whatever you want to label it aside, it is clear that different people are treated differently for doing things that are fundamentally the same. Most times, there is a legitimate reason for this that goes beyond "me and person A are best pals, me and person B regularly e-battle".
End of transmission.

You have to admit, though, while most of the screams at the idea of a 1337clique (cleak?) are complete nonsense, they do hold some truth. There's a serious double standard that can occur when new members join, acting like they're old members before anyone even knows who they are, and while they are usually smart enough not to throw out accusations of favoritism, there can be some there.

Oh, and I agree that some of the accusations against the 1337 are indeed valid, especially what Mike is talking about...but many, many accusations aren't.
And yeah, with HAU we just stopped taking him so seriously in order to appreciate him.
Oh, and shut the fuck up, Zaggy.
Honestly speaking, we're far from being the most newbie-huggin', open arms community I've ever been on. And as somebody who's no longer a newbie, that's fine with me. I also believe you can generally get accepted by people if you pay attention to making your posts good. It has to be pointed out that it's slightly different a ball game in here and in GOD. I think we're an unfairly cool board but the reason most people join this place is still the big O and so I think newbies have it better in related forums. This place, it might take a while for them to get as much as noticed.
No matter how newbie-hugging a board is, though, there's no way to stop regulars forming friendships and becoming a community. Actually, I've been on a board where this *hasn't* happened to the extent of this place and it's lead to the annoying phenomenon of regulars getting bored of the place and quitting visiting. This really sucks because the newbies aren't necessarily the best of posters and anyway, it decreases the amount of good discussions considerably. It's an interest board like this one so that it could be argued some people just lose interest in the topic at hand but on the other hand I know of people I friended outside the board who quit coming just because they got sick of the passive aggressive arguments that happened.
I'm being all tl;dr here but anyway. I think it's great we have a community here and we're not just an interest board - I've been visiting this place for the community regardless of what I've been into at that point of time.
It's not a closed community.. It's just that we don't put up with newbies just because they're new. But we're not too cruel, either. If somebody's English 2nd language and a newbie and has stepped out of line, they'll be politely corrected unless they start trolling or some other crap.
Also, quite often there's no real "consensus" on any members. People silently accept other members because everybody seems to like them, even if they don't personally like them much. We're not all "omg <3<3<3<3" about everybody who's a regular. Even all mods wouldn't sleep in a big great modpile even if given the chance. And even though I get my bitchy moods, I don't voice every negative opinion I have of people. Except on April 1st. (Though I do like that on this board, I could do that - but I would also be called out if I was going overboard with it, most likely by the people who generally like me. It's just how things work here.)
two things that I seem to notice every single time;
- when you're wildly unpopular & constantly scream out how much you don't care if people like you or not & how you don't give a shit that everyone would rather see you gone, it comes off as immensely insincere, ridiculous & pathetic. the fact you take the time, effort & humiliation to say it every. single. fucking. time suggests it fucking bugs you. it's practically the same as the following (except the following can get more sympathy from me);
- when you're wildly unpopular & constantly jokingly add "please like me", or in all seriousness say that you wish you were liked more (which I can sympathise with), copy jokes/styles & basically go out of your way to be liked, it's not. going. to. happen. just take a moment to relax, take a step back to oversee the situation & focus on yourself, others & the relation between the two, instead of constantly ineffectively reaching out for attention & acceptance.
you don't get attention & affection for the mere reason you want attention & affection - it's a two way street, you have to be lovable to some degree to the people you expect the same from, to be loved. when someone's hopeless for attention & affection, all the attention & affection you're going to get will be insincere, out of pity &/or to shut you the fuck up.
cliques are formed everywhere in the real world & also online. it's an easy, simple concept; favoring your friends, people you've gotten a certain connection with over time, above some schlemiel is rather logical & reasonable. being more accepting towards someone who you find friendly/smart/reasonable/interesting is something I wouldn't ever blame anyone for. & it's relatively real fucking simple, too. an attempt at spelling correctly, even if it fails, is usually appreciated. an attempt to use your brain & a bit of logic, even if it fails, usually is appreciated aswell. just TRYING not to be an utterly ignorant moron usually charms people enough to be well accepted. so I really don't understand what the fuss is all about.
double standards, schmouble schmandards, if Zag says the exact same thing as Ricky to the same post, there's still going to be the history telling me he's a waste of air. so yes, you create a reputation, YOU, mostly. others just percieve the way you're behaving, et cetera, logically & like anyone everywhere on the world would, forming an image. if assumptions on which your reputation is based are wrong, you prove them wrong. it's not like no one here has ever turned around the way others thought about him/her. god knows how annoying people here used to find me.

That's true but it's not good to generalise it. I'm way to fucking special and my behavior haven't always been "natural".
Well, I didn't take the internet very seriously back then. I had said whatever I had on my tongue, without a shame. You know, you don't have a person you are talking to in front of you. It's not a RL where you are very careful what you are saying. I found my "enemies" and naturally became a troll. Then I breathed in life into EROS and made the greatest troll that ever walked on the internet. :p No, I didn't, just kidding. As a university student I have improved a lot. One day all of a sudden my English improved and then I started doing crazy things. I found my ways how to get all kinds of reactions of people. It's all complicated and really difficult to analyse. Some idiocy was natural and some acted...
Thanks for loving me. H4U appreciate it. Love ya too because you are very smart. Yeah, I turned it around but honestly it wasn't really my intention. Well, I don't know, I always improvise so you don't really know what you can expect of me. I just have a fun no matter what. And sometimes, I think, I'm such a sell-out.

Most people don't know a lot about politics. That's not as important as people think. It just seems like it. The politics section is usually dead. And most people give lenience to people who speak English as a second language.

What I'm wondering though, is why, in 2006 most of the so called "1337" (bah, you know who I mean) kept replying to HAU's posts with "shut up, mutant face", but now, in 2007, everyone all of a sudden loves him. So, I guess my question is: if HAU didn't change, then how come you all started accepting and loving him around the same time?
DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUN! 1337!   ;) etc
It's been fully explained, in large part by HAU himself. He did change. And it didn't all happen at once. I remember Skratch and myself admitted almost simultaneously that we had started liking HAU. Probably others too. Naturally, after bringing that up, others started to talk about how they didn't hate him anymore either.

I agree with Thomas. If you go out of your way to get noticed, then people won't like you because you're trying too hard. If you're interesting, funny, ect., you'll get noticed eventually.
I can't really criticize someone for wanting to be accepted, to be honest, even if it is on a message board. It's a natural thing for people to want to fit in. I don't see a problem with it, but it gets pathetic when people don't get the reaction that they want, then get self-important about it because they're pissed because they got rejected.
People need to realize that getting noticed or accepted on teh internetz takes patience. I was basically anonymous on these boards for about 4 months when I started posting here, but I didn't bitch at the cool kids or try to suck up to them. Sure, I argued with a lot of them in Other Bands, but I still do that now. So that doesn't count. I just accepted the fact that I was a n00b and delt with it. It's just the internet, and getting that defensive about it is pretty dumb. Almost as dumb as going out of your way to tell everyone that you don't care.

I have been a member for quite some time and it took forever for me to get noticed. I don't remember actually TRYING to get noticed, I just avoided trying to act like a mindless nincompoop. I actually did some really shitty things in my early days of the forums (perhaps some of you remember that whole SWOYM incident?) but I've moved on and I'm now a better person.
Actually, in all honesty, I don't really think I've been "accepted" by the 1337 of these boards, but i don't mind. I just enjoy the conversations I have here, without worrying about status.

I never really had objectives of being accepted, but I certaintly didn't want to be disliked. I actually joined the boards in like 2001 or 2002, back in the days of webdude, I just didn't post very much and enjoyed reading the place. Which is probably a good thing, given that I was like 12/13.
I only really started posting on this incarnation of the board, and even then it was only in GOD or Your Band, I felt comfortable there, I dunno what made me start posting here in General Chat properly, but thats actually even been pretty recent. I enjoy all the discussion here now though.

Hmmm, I guess I'll weight in here. For me, it was just a matter of eventually unblocking HAU when it appeared that he may have actually had something to say.
A BBS is a very strange way to interact, because while we can all read and participate in the same conversations, we also have the choice of which specific parts of each conversation we want to acknowledge. When I first started posting here regularly I remember the feeling of seeing a reply to thread completely washed over by ongoing conversations. And it was fascinating to notice, in the ensuing months, how I became distinguishable from the crowd by one individual after another.
The board's changed since then in the way it absorbs new members. Back then, there was an annoying preponderance of "List your favorite member" threads. One time I even made a parody thread with something to the extent of "choose two people out of the board who you wouldn't condemn to Hell for all eternity" and was amazed to see people actually replying seriously. Now there's thankfully much less overt listings, but the way this board is cliquey has changed.
For one, over the years we've definitely homogenized. Back in the day, there were many more subgroups of friends among the "popular kids". TripBoy in particular has mellowed considerably, and actually has male friends from the board now. While this has cut down on fighting and alternating allegiances, it's also created a single social group that is more collective in its acceptance.
When I started climbing the ol' social ladder, I can almost tick off the order of the people that acknowledged me, and it happened over many months, one at a time. Now, due to the social homogenization, the acceptance is much more collective. "Oh, so-and-so like so-and-so, maybe I should check 'em out too." so it snowballs much faster than it did previously. It's kinda cliquey, but it's not exclusionist. In fact, it's the opposite. We certainly take a while to acknowledge certain people, but in part that's because it often takes people a while to learn how to post and post well. However, once someone demonstrates the ability to be interesting, amusing and insightful, it's almost a point of pride for the "1337" to be the first to single them out.
It's nothing evil that new kids have to work their way into the inner circle. That's just how life works.

Funny. I kept resisting the urge to post in this thread about how awesome I am 'cause I always liked HAU. Even when he was more trollish, he cracked me the hell up.
I've always liked him too and never could understand why people hated him so much. I mean, yes, he was being kinda stalkerish by saving Iz's and Simma's pics and stuff but it made other people very angry. And I believe some people do the same thing to Maria too.
The "discovery" has definitely changed. Maybe the community's closer now or maybe people just talk to each other off the board more but I remember having an IM convo with Izie or somebody where we were basically like, "Oh, you'ved talked to Mota Boy outside the board, too? How cool, so have I! Omgz we totally know the same person!". But basically it was an odd bonding moment that I can't imagine happening anymore.

This has been going on for years. Crazy.
As far as I can remember this board has always seemed to consist of two different groups - the more intelligent posters (intelligence being a generalisation) and the new people that would come across as most likely posessing a single functioning braincell between the lot of them. The former have always given the latter a hard time and the latter have always whinged about the former.
I'm not sure if this board ever had a good ratio of interesting conversation to utter rubbish, I can only figure that back in the day it never really used to bother me that this place was mostly used for people to feel better about themselves. Feeling better in sense of sharing of what they get up to and making friends etc etc and unfortunately a LOT of shit slinging. Whether it be making fun of the new person because their world view could fit in a cardboard box or people that seem to talk themselves into a hole or people being friends one day and enemies the next, it just goes on... and on... and on.
As much as I have many fond memories of posting here, I've also thought for a long time that many people here need a swift kick up the arse and a few lessons in common decency 101. The way some people talk to each other here is pretty disgusting and even when there's a light hearted period it sooner or later reverts back to a pretty nasty place to be.
I guess my point is that it's not so much about all this retarded "1337" stuff, it's the board culture in general that leads to all this whinging. I used to check this place multiple times a day but then it was every couple of days, then every couple of weeks and just reading a few posts would make me think "oh god WTF". A hell of a lot of people used to shit me up the wall, either because I thought overall they were stuck up and needed to get a life or some other reason. I'm over being super-judgemental and negative. I know other people have changed and I maybe would like to get talking to some board members again (HINT HINT).
I'm not sure if this is directed whinging or me letting off steam. Maybe it's some sick sort of nostalgia for BBS chit-chat. Let me know what you guys think.
Fuck it, I'll just start CCing you and Rick when I decide to get all long-winded and serious-like in a thread.

loved that first bit I quoted. =)
the times we get to talk (mainly because I use MSN & e-mail so little, but I have the feeling you're kinda the same - SO MCUHIN COMMON OMG!!!1), I never feel like it's actually been as long as it in reality has been. we could not talk for a year & still pick up old conversations & chat away like we always do. it takes some updating, of course, but it's still an interesting phenomenon I normally only share with a couple of my closest friends in real life, who I feel I've known forever. it may be some kind of automatic understanding, or from what we've seen from each other on the board, or our conversations, but I like to think it's all of the three combined. of course I would prefer to talk to you more often. it's just that I'm not very internetty & unfortunately, that's my loss, when it comes to a couple of fantastic people I only get to speak ON the internet.
nostalgia is pretty natural, I'd say. but you were very different (though not essentially different - you never really changed, thank god, but I think it's safe to say you wisened up, when it comes to yourself & others) & your life was extremely different in the days you still visited the board regularly. I wonder with your kind of life & the way it's developed, you even feel the need for online chit-chat with a bunch nutjobs on a public message board & if it in the end wouldn't irritate & annoy you. taken into account that on here not only everyone can see & read your jazz, but you can see & read everyone else's too & I don't know if that's still something that interests you, when it comes to people you don't necessarily know/appreciate.
besides everyone from the old days, who still hangs out here, growing a bit older (& hopefully a bit wiser & more mature), not much has really changed on the BBS. maybe what you feel is some kind of nostalgia towards your more "careless" days, when you could still throw yourself in a conversation with anyone & everyone about absolutely nothing important & nothing in particular without getting irritated about people's behaviour & such.
either way, <333.
