View Full Version : One Gig of Ram is Not Enough to Operate a Half-Terabyte of Disk Storage

Le sigh. Time for another computer upgrade. And to add insult to injury, my fucking external Hd won't work thru firewire port. Well, it does, for about an hour or two but then it crashes. Dunno what's the problem. I've tried to attach to other systems but it yields the same results. And I don't want to place it internaly because it's IDE and the only IDEs I have in my system are the optical drives--the hard drives are all serial ATAs. So now it's connected through USD and this proves to be extremly homosexual. I can read and play files normally but the rate to swipe files in between drives is below one meg per second. Gay, gay, gay.

Everyone pity me.

WTF? I'm on 768mb and nearly half a terrabyte of disk space and I'm fine with my setup.

Get a USB enclosure, faster. Although it takes more CPU time with todays CPU's that's not an issue.

Well depends what apps you run. I have a vmware that takes up nearly 300mbs of ram plus I was burning a DVD which is another 80mb...

And what's that USB enclosure?

An e-bay search for it (http://search.ebay.com/3-5-USB-drive-enclosure_W0QQsokeywordredirectZ1QQfromZR8QQsatitl eZ3.5Q22Q20USBQ20driveQ20enclosure)

They really do rock. The transfer rates are basically IDE speed. SATA etc. don't make a shit of difference because none of todays HD-s are up to their peak transfer rates.

My dream is to get a SCSI drive to run the OS off. They always go cheap on ebay but the SCSI card's (68pin ones) are so fucking expensive. If I had one of them the computer would fly. It don't matter about CPU power anymore, an xp1800 is fine for most things. It's all about RAM and hard-drive speed. Hopefully I'll find a SCSI card for cheap enough soon.

Also if you use that much RAM, saying the obvious, but you gotta get more.

Another dream I have is to build a 3GB ramdisk and run an OS off that. Fuckin be insane quick.

I'll look into that enclosure thing.

Thing is, the USB does work. Just need hi-speed USB port and apperantly my mobo doesn't carry one -- but my laptop does. Go figure. And SATA does make a difference when you swap files from one drive to another.

And to ran a SCSI drive you can get a mobo that already carries the U-160 card (68pins). I saw couple of those for under 300$. Now if you were to get a U-320 card for the new SCSI drives... now that gets expensive -- the mobos are over 450$.

but fuck SCSI all together. Do what I did. Get the Raptor(from western digital) drives. They have a 4.5ms seek time. That's as fast as most SCSIs.... but if you're really looking for more, try RAID 0. I specificly bought a mobo that has both RAID 0 and 1 so that I can raid my drive in the future. So far however, no need for it. The boot time is insanely fast unless I attach a bunch of other storage HDs to it (which I do).

Get a USB 2.0 PCI card then if your mobo don't have a port. They're like £8.

I'll look into the mobo thing and the raptor. I should have some cash spare at the end of next term so I might be able to build my dream machine. That fucker would last so long. Maybe get a chip with loads of cache too rather than clock speed.

I would usually expect the opposite... at least over here... he he

Yah i'll get the PCI card. It's just a bitch because I was counting on my mobo to carry it already. It's a 250$ ASUS.

As for the raptors - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-200&depa=0 - 10000rpm, 5.2 seek time. That's the one I have.

Or - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-160&depa=0 - 10000rpm, 4.5 seek time. Good shit.

Damn I don't have SATA on my mobo I can get a PCI card though. That drive looks awesome though. £71.25 so good deal. Can you get it any cheaper from any of your various 'connections'?

Oooo can't wait to get this to play with. gonna be awesome quick.

That thing is smokin' fast indeed. I went from power-off to full windows load-up in under 15 seconds when I just installed the drive. A good buy.
