So, I've become very board with jogging, since I've done it almost every day for about 4 years. I'm thinking of taking up biking in an attempt to try something different. But, I gots me some questions, and since the board has been dragging lately, I figured I'd ask you guys instead of Google.

1.) How much is a cheap-ish bike? I'm not looking for anything fancy, just something that works and isn't completely shitty.

2.) Is it more or less exercise than jogging?

3.) I know that everyone always says that you never forget how to ride a bike, but I haven't ridden a bike since I was about 13. Is this saying actually true?

4.) I cannot think of a 4th question, but I like even numbers.

1) A cheap bike that won't die your first time out will probably be about $120.
2) It requires less effort to go the same distance, but it exercises different muscles that you might not be used to exercising.
3) Yes and no. You'll be able to get on it and start going pretty easily, but you'll probably be a little wobbly and nervous at first. That's how it was for me anyway and I hadn't been on a bike in like 10 years.
4) I like odd numbers
5) so there

Do both. Jogging is better exercise in my opinion, but biking won't fuck up your ankles and knees that much.

3 weeks ago, I rode my bike from my house (20 miles away from Philadelphia) to the Jersey shore. It was fucking crazy...a 50 mile ride. It took us 4 and half hours. We could have made it back, but our friend said he would pick us up with his truck. It was a cool experience. But it hurts your ass more than your legs.

I have a $350 Giant Rincon that is pretty nice...hasn't busted on me like those shoddy bikes from Walmart that parents buy their kids. For "forgetting how to ride"...how old are you now? I didn't ride for about a year, got on the other day and after a week I'm back to the same level I was a year ago.

And by the way, biking is way less exercise. The wheel is an object designed to allow us to do less work, so natrually you're doing less work by using an invention that harnesses it's power. There used to be this chart in my gym class that stated the calories burned per half hour of various aerobic and cardiovascular exercises, and I remember jogging being the highest.

In one day? Wow, that's impressive. I've ridden from Antiedam to my home city, about 65 miles, but it was cut into two days (a car brought camping stuff and waited for us at a camping ground at the midway point). Biking is fun, but I don't think I've really biked since that outing. I prefer backpacking now, but I think I'm gonna get a new bike and try and get back into pedaling.

Unless you are going uphill...to me anyway. It feels like when I'm going uphill I'm exerting more energy than running.

Hmmm, well when you bike up a hill you have to pedal the weight of the bike with gravity trying to pull the wheels downhill, so maybe it's possible that riding a bike uphill is more energy than jogging uphill. But on flat ground and downhill, biking is way less energy, and going downhill on a bike takes pretty much no energy at all, unlike jogging. So overall, jogging burns more calories.

Yeah, biking doesn't expend nearly the energy that jogging does, plus it's more concentrated on your lower body as it removes the gravity component. Also, don't forget that you won't just be buying a bike, but a bike pump and (ideally) a helmet too. I haven't used my bike in months because I'm too lazy to go buy a pump.

Neither should jogging if you have the right footwear and do stretches before/after.

You should just use your bike when you would otherwise take a bus. Not instead of jogging or other kinds of exercises. Biking to get somewhere is so much better.

Don't be retarded. If you've ever run at all you know exactly the wearing effect it has on your knees, and to a lesser extent on your ankles. Pretending that stretches help is just stupid, since it has nothing to do with muscles but depend on the shock delivered to your frame.

Jogging is really horrible for your knees. It's a great method of exercise, but it shouldn't be your primary or only mode.

Also if you get a bike, you need a lock, too.

Biking is a great form of exercise. Jogging is more of a cardiovascular thing, good for your heart and heart rate and stuff, while biking is a more thorough workout. It still hits the cardiovascular thing somewhat, but exercises more important muscle groups and stuff.

Anyway, as far as getting a bike, I'd say spend about $200 at the least. Don't get a bike from Target or Walmart, go to a bike shop. Those bikes are pre-assembled before they get to the store, and the guy who sells you it doesn't know shit about it to make sure it's safe. They're way more likely to fuck up.

The knee thing is a good plus for me, because my knees suck as it is. Giving them a break for even a few weeks would probably be a good thing.

I wish I could do that, but I live so far from any place that I need to go, that biking to even the closest store or friend's house would be about 6 hours just to get there. And while that be great exercise, I don't have that kind of time.

That's what I figured, since it moves your leg in a different way than jogging does.

Luckily, I don't need a lock because, like I mentioned above, I live pretty far away from anyone, so locking it my garage will do.

Thanks for the tips and such everyone.

Good luck! :) I love biking. I wish I had a nice bike still. It'll definitely be a nice variation.

i only recently noticed how much of a strain it puts on your knees. i busted my knee snowboarding in like... february... and every time i attempt to jog, my knee starts acting up. and it's totally fine otherwise, so =/

biking ftw. downhill preferably.

Yeah, it's something people don't really think about... but a few years ago, I was going running every day to train for something, and I started to notice problems in my knees over time, so I started switching to some other methods. Then I talked to my cousin who played soccer for years, and she said that all that running + leg work totally screwed up her knees. But when you do actually think about it, running is just repeatedly throwing all your weight down really abruptly, and a lot of that force is directed right at your knees. They're strong, but they can only take so much.

And yes, downhill biking rules. I always lol inside when I'm going downhill and pass people who are pedaling up the hill.

Do you guys seriously have a knee pain after jogging? Being a soccer player since a little baby, I guess my legs are designed for running, the point is, I have no problems with knees. Except little injuries but that's the other thing because soccer demands crazy moves. Never had a pain from the straight running. All I have is a muscle pain.

Shouldn't be primary or the only!? Running is the first thing which cames to mind, you don't need anything, bicycle and shit...and it pwns every muscle in your body. I recommend swimming then if you sissies have a problem with knees. ;)

Biking is more thorough!? In what kind of way?

btw, lolz at joggers,
"A jogger is also a derogatory term for competitive runner who lacks speed, endurance, form etc."

my favorite thing is ski resorts that turn into biking destinations in the summer. the ski lifts still run, so you only get to bike downhill. like.. kill yourself kinda downhill. its amazing.

It's not running, it's because of injuries.

It's important to run correctly. You need to develop technique and then it's fine.

If you want a cheap bike that'll last you about three to five years, but it from Wal Mart. But beware, after those three to five years while you ride it, the chain can break off and the break can get stuck, so those are only good if you can handle a bike very well and are able to stop with your feet.

Everybody, take care of your knees.

I slightly underestimated knee promblems. Apparently, girls are more likely to injure than guys.
http://www.kidshealth.org/teen/safety/first_aid/knee_injuries.html

"In growing kids and teens, imbalances in muscle flexibility and strength can lead to injuries and inflammation from overuse. "

So yeah, soccer player and jogging overuse, neeeever happened. Read how to prevent it.

Well when you're just riding to class or to a friend's house, you wear your casual clothes, which for me often includes jeans. :P I ain't gonna change my clothes for that! I think they were saying that unless you're like, racing or working out hardcore or something, wearing the racing outfit is stupid... and I agree.

What's a camelbak?

Well anyway, I think there's nothing wrong with wearing something comfortable to work out in, but I ain't gonna wear fucking tights and shit just to joy ride or get some exercise.

a camelbak is basically a small backpack that holds water and keeps it cool. there's a tube coming out of it right by your shoulder, so you can pretty much drink hands-free while riding your bike. it's really useful on hard trails on hot days. love it.
