A kid from my school was shot and killed Monday. Not at school; we were off for the holidays. He was downtown, and three Hispanic guys pull up (probably drunk or on something), and start flashing gang signs. The student and his group (all Black; about six) aren't in a gang or anything, but the three Hispanic dudes must have thought they were. Apparently the Student had a beer or something, and they threatened him for him to give it to him. He hands it to them, saying since they have a gun, he's not even going to mess with him. The oldest of the three (~20, the other two were ~17) drinks it, and throws the bottle back at the student. The student barely flinches, and they shoot him. This is all in what's basically unclaimed terrority for gangs.

What the fuck. What's the fucking point. There's no reason behind the shot except drugged out racism/gang violence. I mean, shit. You're going to shoot a seventeen-year-old who's four days from completing his junior year, because you think he looks wrong, or doesn't make the right hand guestures? In the end, what is the gain? Nothing. Nothing except one dead student, who everyone liked, and had a lot of stuff going for him. Some victory, bastards.

I don't feel like you can look much into the gain or anything. One of my friends used to be involved in a gang in Chicago when he was around 20... he spent a little time in jail, and eventually got a clue and left Chicago so he could start over. He doesn't even know how to talk about it, because he can't believe how stupid it was. He doesn't know what the point was or what motivated them to think it was logical or anything. It's ridiculous... and horribly sad.

I watched a guy get beaten to death in front of a bar a block from my apartment this past weekend. I walk past tonight on my way home from work and everybody is singing along to "Sweet Caroline."

Yeah, it's crazy. I mean, I can't complain, I've never even seen a gun outside of a situation where it would make sense, but there's a lot of knife violence and shit around here, outside nightclubs and stuff. One of my friends got thrown to the ground and repeatedly kicked in the head (like 10 times by 4 guys) a few months back, obvious hospital visit. All over some disagreement over who hailed a taxi first.

With the old school way of policing gone, you all need to take a tip from my town. You need to relax business aquisition and dirty money laws to let the gangs get so powerful that they manage to consolodate their gains, carve up the city between them and put a stop to all this petty violence and ass-faggotry and start acting as a second police force, twelvepacking any gutterscum nigger who thinks it's okay to stab people for no reason.

Obviously gutter criminals aren't going to be afraid of three days in the slammer before bail, and then an eight month suspended sentence. But they're still afraid of the big dogs taking a hammer and chisel to every joint in their body.

For some reason, my initial response to this was, "Why do we have to learn to be Canadian?" I'm so lame.

Anyway, the shit is all too common... I lived in a rather ghetto neighborhood one year, and a few weeks into living there, I came home one night and the neighborhood was pretty taped off. I had to tell them I lived there to get through. I asked some guys what happened, and they said some girl was walking up the street WITH A HOOD ON and some car was driving by, slowed down to a stop as it passed her, and put 13 shots into her. (They were only like 2 feet away from her.) I started crying, because I'd never been around that a lot (though it was the first of many that year), and I went up to my apartment, where my roommate answered the door and greeted me with a sly grin, "Happy shooting!"

We have plenty of deaths around here, but it normally stays out of the school. The last two student deaths were a car wreck last year when a kid stole a car, and then three years ago in a drunk driving accident.

This reminds me of every bar in the 2 neighboring towns. Really high crime areas, but all the college kids go because they serve underage. There always ends up being some kind of violence inside/outside (beating, stabbing, etc)....and either later that night or the next night, everyone is singing along to *Sweet Caroline* again, as if nothing happened.
