It's when what you expected not to happen does happen. Like... it would be ironic if you took your shoe off one day and there was a hand there instead of a foot.

That's okay, most people who speak English don't really know what it means or use it in the right place either.

ilovellamas

OKAY. I admit my example sucked.

Regardless, if my definition is wrong, then why doesn't someone step in and actually EXPLAIN it instead of just sitting there and being like "oh you are wrong"? That's just stupid.

sKratch
06-02-2007, 11:06 AM
It's actually not very easy to come up with a very good example of irony. Here's a loling example of situational irony from wikipedia, our good friend on the Internet:
When John Hinckley attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan, all of his shots initially missed the President; however a bullet ricocheted off the bullet-proof windows of the Presidential limousine and struck Reagan in the chest. Thus, the windows made to protect the President from gunfire were responsible for his being shot.

And I shit you not, this is also on the list:
A paper cut from a box of bandages.

ilovellamas
06-02-2007, 11:08 AM
Ah yes, those are good examples. Thanks, skratch. (actually thanks wiki, haha.) That makes the definition I gave correct.

mrconeman
06-02-2007, 11:17 AM
Irony is not just a way to get your shirt smooth.

an example of irony would be if you're a town planner, heading to a convention of town planners, to give a talk on how you solved the problem of traffic congestion.
But you were late because you were stuck in traffic.

I guess my train of thought was that, coneman made the token post. Harnum wanted to point out that he was gonna do the same thing, so he was adding something. I was adding something different because of the varied lyrics from what people know, and a link. And then dain basically reposted the initial post, just with a different line. I don't really care. It's not a big deal, I wasn't getting all freak-outy, I just thought it was dumb and redundant. But seriously, whatever.

Yeah, you used it as a synonym for "coincidentally", which, coincidentally, is the biggest misuse of "irony" ever.

Now that's ironic.

Edit: Don't you think?
Meh, if you ask me, it's just a little too ironic. And yeah, I really do think.

There are different forms of irony. Dramatic irony, such as that in plays, books or movies, is when the audience knows something a character on stage does not. Like if a character is helping out his father's killer without knowing it.

Irony also occurs when something happens that's the opposite of what's expected. See the "Tree of irony" example.

Also, irony is used in pop culture to explain something that pretends to take itself seriously as a joke, or something that a person likes not for its intended entertainment value, but for its accidental value. Like when Good Charlotte's God-awful lyrics make me laugh so much that I put them on repeat, I'm getting ironic enjoyment out of it. I like Good Charlotte's songs, but I like them because I'm laughing at their message rather than actually appreciating it.

Edit - and llamas - I love you like a third cousin once removed, but calling out Dain for continuing a running joke merely because he's Dain was a definite thread foul.

Any other requires people to know the storyline relatively well. That's the biggest issue, I think, you have to start at the beginning to really get anything that happens. I picked one that I, personally, thought was hilarious, but also required no background of the characters.
