Hi folks,
I'm translating the lyrics for "Cool to hate" and some words make me difficulties with understanding:
- Quad,
- jocks,
- unhip.

What is the context of these words:
- lame - something like "lame duck" or "lame in the left leg?,
- stuff - things/material or something else?
- office - bureau?

And, who is Dr. Martens and Muscle T's?

Is this a joke?

Quad = Public School and university slang for the square open meeting place enclosed between the school or college buildings.

Jocks = Opposite of nerd. Nerds can't be jocks and vice versa, since jocks usually have little or no interest in books and nerds have little or no interest in gyms.

Unhip = Some one who is not hip.

Lame = Not cool.

Stuff = Things.

Office = Principal's Office.

Dr. Marten's = A brand of shoes.

Muscle T's = Sleeveless T-shirts.

....wow I can't believe i just did that.

It's not a joke. As you can see I'm not American. Besides these words I couldn't find in my dictionary. Thanks for help. Btw. I think "hip" isn't a piece of body? :)

No problem man.

And yes, "Hip" does have different meanings.

Yup, you're right. "Hip" in this case means cool or trendy. Or not cool or trendy, as "unhip" in the song.

Thanks, you're hip :)

There are few other words that I'm not sure about meanings:

jive ("All I Want") - prejudice/superstition?
give you lip ("Cool to hate") - to kiss?
thingies ("Don't pick it up") - things?
bummed ("Don't pick it up") - ?

Translating "Ixnay on the hombre" is almost finished :)

"back off your rules
back off the jive"

"jive" is a dance, meaning that someone should stop using empthy phrases, saying like "quit the small talk, I'm sick of it!"

"give you lip" is something I don't understand myself

"It had a pair of thingies (referring to a female, pair of things, like breasts)
But a mustache too (referring to men, they usually wear mustaches)
Not clearly male nor female (now you get the sentence?)
So now what to do"

"You‘re gonna be bummed that you went that way"

You get your ass kicked, that you decided the wrong way, that's it basically.

Hey man, no problem. And you're hip too. :)

"Give you lip" = talking back. Or arguing.
