The cool thing about BTMI! is that they give all their music away for free. Here are all their albums in order of how you should probably listen to them:

Goodbye Cool World (2006) (http://www.quoteunquoterecords.com/qur002/qur002.zip)
Get Warmer (2007) (http://www.quoteunquoterecords.com/qur013/qur013.zip)
To Leave Or Die In Long Island (2006) (http://www.quoteunquoterecords.com/qur004/qur004.zip)
Album Minus Band (2005) (http://www.quoteunquoterecords.com/qur003/qur003.zip)

If you like it, then they have a split EP on www.quoteunquoterecords.com, where they also have all their lyrics, as well as on www.bombthemusicindustry.com

When I Was A Little Girl (rerecorded/better) (http://www.savefile.com/files/1352579)

And "Silence" is literally silence that leads into the bonus track.

Then again, you're probably missing the bonus track, New Orleans Is Stinking (http://www.savefile.com/files/1352586)

Against Me! - Reinventing Axl Rose (http://www.sendspace.com/file/shujtw)

Against Me!'s Reinventing Axl Rose is an impressive debut that manages to combine fist-in-the-air singalong choruses, lagered-up rhythms, and urgent drumbeats with the underground, raw intensity these punks are known for live. It's a dynamic record that not only stands firm in its own right, but also hints at a propensity for songwriting in Tom Gabel -- the group's hoarse, politically conscious singer/songwriter -- just starting to be fully realized. From the rowdy, country-influenced drinking anthem "Pints of Guinness Make You Strong," to the somber closing notes of "8 Full Hours of Sleep," Against Me! performs every track with the passion of those who truly believe a song among friends can start a movement for change.

Seriously, the truest of punx, but it's a legitimately great record. Tom Gabel is a fantastic songwriter and has a lot of passion behind him as he yells out his thoughts and emotions. Great stuff.

Because I uploaded it for the indie thread:

Q and not U - No Kill No Beep Beep (http://www.sendspace.com/file/xqr3gn)

Quirk-ass posturing matched with infectious D.C. backbeat and overly catchy singsong/shoutfests comes together as one of the best aggressive indie pop albums to see the light of day in many years. Q & Not U offer a take on the classic D.C. sound by bending its rules a bit, making things more infectious and fun to listen to than the Dischord world is used to. Their minor melodies and to-the-throat rhythmic drive, matched with an aesthetic sense that offers no cliché, offer more replay value than many of this band's peers, such as the other 2000-era Dischord addition, Faraquet. Shows are know to turn to dance parties in quite a hurry. Buy this for the enjoyment of technical spazz pop that few can produce with such tact.

Actually, I'll post a list of the stuff I'd put up with AMG comments, and if anyone thinks some of it sounds interesting I'll put it up.

Garbage - "Version 2.0"
Everything that made Garbage a success is here -- Shirley Manson's seductive strength, strong pop sensibility, a production that falls halfway between alternative rock and techno -- presented in a slightly newer form. Version 2.0 may be gilded with fresh drum loops and shiny, computerized production, but it lacks the thrilling immediacy of the debut. It isn't that Garbage's sound is no longer appealing -- it's that high-tech production has a tendency to make the songs sound the same. That was a problem with the debut as well, but it's discouraging to find that those flaws are repeated, not solved. Still, when Garbage pull it all together, the results are irresistible, and there are just enough moments on the album -- including "Special," "Push It," "Temptation Waits," and "I Think I'm Paranoid" -- to make it a successful follow-up *I actually disagree, and think it's a lot stronger than their debut*

Ayreon - "The Universal Migrator, Pt. 1: The Dream Sequencer"
However, the band does indeed perform with a late-'90s edge, while also maintaining a consistently identifiable sound and style as many of these textural soundscapes are enhanced by sweet-tempered vocals, layered synths, and seductive melodies that skirt the fringes of ambient electronica and classic progressive rock. Whereas, Lucassen excels as an accomplished guitarist and colorist who chooses his notes wisely yet is equally adept at seizing the moment by way of bone-crushing leads and concisely executed chord progressions. The Dream Sequencer is brimming with climactic overtures, enticing vocal harmonies, and memorably melodic themes. Basically, Lucassen's strong compositions and alluring arrangements strike an engaging chord as the music and overall production hearken back to the glory days of defiantly inventive progressive rock. Highly recommended.

Porcupine Tree - "In Absentia"
Continuing in the growing commercial vein of their previous releases, Porcupine Tree's In Absentia may be the most accessible release to ever spew forth from the group. Rolling electronic percussion blends with simple and solid live drumming to provide an understated backbeat as perennial Tree leader Steven Wilson pastes his complicated pop over the proceedings. Wilson's ability to bury his layered vocals in mountains of spacy electric guitar without drowning out his fragile lyrics is still a valued feature of the music, and the rare moments of clarity that his vocals display are breathtaking in their power. A reliance on a somewhat gothic heavy metal sound makes for some bizarre moments, especially when held up against his gentler material. The best example of this is the chugging "Wedding Nails," which recalls Dream Theater in its grandiose scope without utilizing the same sort of technical wizardry. But Wilson manages to bridge the gap between the various genres he utilizes, creating an environment where his haunting melodies could take a drastic turn at any minute. Porcupine Tree also continue their Radiohead fascination, although the influence is much less direct than on their last few efforts. Instead, it comes through at odd intervals, like the moments of sparse instrumentation on the otherwise lush "Heartattack in a Lay By." Sonically gorgeous and deceivingly complex, In Absentia has the most immediate appeal of anything Wilson has released under this moniker up to this point. By keeping the songs at manageable lengths and avoiding the avant-garde electronica flourishes of the band's early days, Porcupine Tree has grown into a fully realized pop group without cutting any of the elements that also make them an important force in the neo-prog movement.

Rob Thomas - "Something to Be"
With its anthemic choruses and achingly sincere sentiments, Something to Be is clearly the work of the lead singer/songwriter of Matchbox Twenty, yet it lacks the lean rock-oriented sound of the group's albums, even if it is helmed by Matt Serletic, who has produced all three of the band's records. Serletic and Thomas have made a conscious attempt to have this solo album feel lighter, brighter, and a little hipper than Matchbox Twenty's music, adding slight drum loops and electronic elements to the rhythms while taking Thomas away from strictly guitar-based arrangements. Heavy on keyboards, elastic guitars, horns, insistent rhythms, and even the occasional gospel-inspired backing chorus or worldbeat inflection, this is a far splashier affair than the average Matchbox Twenty album, and that alone would make Something to Be a noteworthy solo record, since it is indeed a different beast than Thomas' regular gig, but the fresher sound is married to a strong set of songs that play to his strengths as a craftsman of big, anthemic post-alternative mainstream rock.

Scissor Sisters - "Ta-Dah"
Soundtracking his own mythical night at Studio 54 circa 1978, Babydaddy's Discoball Jazzfest Studio in New York City pumps out tracks gloriously in debt to the Bee Gees (of course), Elton John (although not on the track he contributes piano to), the Rolling Stones' brassy late-'70s stompers, electro-disco arena rock (if there is such a thing), and some sort of '70s disco hokum that features a very talented Gina Gershon on jew's-harp.

Toad the Wet Sprocket - "Dulcinea"
Without changing the formula too much, they conjured up 12 more hooks, stretching them ever so slightly to make the alternative tunes a bit edgier and the mellow ones a little folkier, and scoring a couple of modest hits along the way with "Something's Always Wrong" and "Fall Down." One of the thematic threads of Toad's music has always been a certain spirituality, a sense of awe and wonder in regard to life and death. Dulcinea exploits and explores that theme with reverence and humility, going so far as to close the album with "Reincarnation Song," a delicate examination of a soul's transition shrouded musically by a veil of electric guitar feedback. Counteracting that heaviness with an offbeat, country-tinged ditty about the pros of Nanci Griffith versus Loretta Lynn is pure Toad, never being pinned into a stylistic corner. One of the best songs on this album, and perhaps their entire catalog, is "Windmills," a moody look at the fragility and futility of existence that will cause not only the exquisite melody to linger with you, but contemplations of your own purpose in life. Framed by the flawless production of Gavin MacKillop, every song on this record creates a world of its own that is impossible not to be drawn into.

Okkervil River, The Weakerthans, The Mountain Goats, Sufjan Stevens, Bright Eyes, The Postal Service (same singer as Death Cab, I like them more than DCFC, though), The Good Life, Architecture In Helsinki, Cat Power, Jens Lekman, Lily Allen, Los Campesinos, Metric, The New Pornographers, Of Montreal, Stars, and Wolf Parade.

If you need me to upload any of these, then I'll do it much later than expected.

The Weakerthans - Left And Leaving
The Mountain Goats - The Sunset Tree
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Bright Eyes - Lifted or The Story Is In The Soil...

I want to add a few to this...

Neutral Milk Hotel- In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (this is a must)
The Mountain Goats- Tallahassee (much more subdued than the Sunset Tree...I like it better, but both are amazing)
Rilo Kiley- Take Offs and Landings
Nick Drake- Pink Moon

I have all of these on my computer, so if you need them, I can up them. Except I'm having trouble finding out where "Aeroplane" is/what folder it's in.

Assuming you mean Fox Confessor Brings The Flood, yes, I do.

On a side note, I would like to say that Challengers by The New Pornographers is a fantastic album, despite whatever bad reviews you might read. Listen to the title track; it's one of my favorite NP songs from any album.

I've listened to this album, like 8 times over the past three days. I didn't add it because I didn't think it was very "poppy" or whatever, but yeah, it's fucking amazing. Also, thanks for Tallahassee, I don't have it, and I want it.

I have Pt.2 or The Final Experiment if you're looking for those.

Edit2: Also for Mike/anyone who wants an awesome album. Jimmy Eat World - Chase This Light (http://www.sendspace.com/file/esxo1v). Not quite as good as Futures, but still has some of what are my favorite songs from any band at the moment. Definitely a must have for most people. Jimmy Eat World is so much more... good than they were a few albums back. It's amazing.

New Pornographers stuff coming next.

New Pornographers - Challengers (http://www.sendspace.com/file/t98kz0) People rag this for not being as whatever as their other albums. Being slower and stuff. But I think that it's just more influenced by Neko Case, and if not, that's what it sounds like. In my opinion, it's the perfect mix of Neko Case with normal New Pornographers. Definitely worth a few listens to get used to the new style.

The Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride - http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?4wwokzb3xjt

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drj700/j708/j70890wfiaq.jpg

Darnielle at his best writes finely observed, slightly surreal, impressionistic vignettes that manage to mix life as we live it with life as we wish we could live it, and as such he has more in common with a short story writer than he does with the typical singer/songwriter. At his worst, he sounds glib, wordy, over wrought and ultimately unbelievable. Thankfully there is little of that kind of sputtering here, and Heretic Pride is almost perfectly structured

This cd came out today, but I got it a few days ago. It's really fucking good, as The Mountain Goats always are.

I dunno how familiar you are with the Mountain Goats, but I'll put it in context of their other albums since I don't know any other way to describe it: it basically sounds like a cross between all of the albums that they released on 4AD, but a little heavier on the drums. Lyrically, it's much more like their low-fi stuff, more stories about fictional characters than autobiographical stuff.

That's like saying "everyone should listen to Buckethead because he plays fast!" (which, yes, I know you and lots of other people like to do), without taking regard to people may not like that style of guitar playing.

I'd much rather listen to music that doesn't take itself as seriously and seems as fun to make as it is to listen to. Granted, I haven't listened to Tech N9ne, but based off your own descriptions, you're listening to the music for the wrong reasons.

Also: Nieh, think indie-folk with short-stories/poems for lyrics, lots of awesome, plenty of acoustic guitars and orchestral strings, and, as Jakebert said, some pretty sweet drumming.

Reflection Eternal - Train of Thought (http://www.sendspace.com/file/qygx2l)

http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/12150.jpg

Another one of my picks, this is an amazing album by Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek, working together under the name Reflection Eternal. If you enjoyed Army of the Pharaohs, as I was pleased to see some of you did, check this one out too. It'll blow your mind. And don't be skeptical if you don't really enjoy Kweli's solo stuff. I thought Eardrum was a bit bland and was ready to write him off, but discovering both this and Black Star within the same week have cemented him in my mind as completely legendary.

JohnnyNemesis
02-20-2008, 12:34 AM
Quality is one of the greatest albums of all time. The Beautiful Struggle is not as praised, but I think it's a masterpiece. Anyone who hasn't heard those albums has not heard any of his solo work, because Eardrum doesn't even count (it's THAT boring).

Autonomist
02-20-2008, 12:41 AM
Eardrum was my first ever Kweli experience, and I'm sure you could see how that could be incredibly disappointing (I do like Everything Man though). If you could upload Quality I'd greatly appreciate it, because now that I can see what all the fuss is about I'd really like to emerse myself in his good stuff.

And if you haven't heard Reflection Eternal and you're not downloading it right now you have no excuse!

JohnnyNemesis

Eardrum was my first ever Kweli experience

That's just tragic. Seriously, tragic.

I'll give you both Quality and Beautiful Struggle. If you don't like one, try the other. Quality is universally praised by fans and critics alike (it's considered his magnum opus), but sometimes I actually like The Beautiful Struggle even more. He was criticized for having more poprap beats on it, but he never did lose substance in his flow as a result (maybe just a bit in his rhyme scheme)

Anyway, I'll edit them into this post shortly. Maybe even in one .zip file.

And if you haven't heard Reflection Eternal and you're not downloading it right now you have no excuse!

Of course I have!

EDIT: Here ya go (https://vspace.vassar.edu/rialmonte/Talib%20Kweli.zip?uniq=-lqlll3)

I might pick the album up then. In regards to NMH, I've always thought their music is just ok. Not bad, but I've never seen why it's supposed to be so amazing. The vocals were always pretty grating for me for some reason though and I don't see any reason to sit through grating vocals for music that's just ok in my ears. So hopefully the Mountain Goats are better.
