View Full Version : British Comedy Thread Of All Purposes
Just did a search and we've got topics for The Office, Coupling, Mighty Boosh, a fucking million British comedy show topics but not one to combine them all.
So here we have one!
My latest obsession is The Peep Show. Effing hilarious, fully recommendable, first episode is up on youtube, go here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=r1WmUkeAJus
The shows I own on DVD: The Office, Green Wing, Coupling, The Fast Show.
Shows I love enough to own on DVD: Black Books, Men Behaving Badly.
Other shows I've really enjoyed: Teachers, The Royle Family, Smack the Pony, My Family, the Ali G Show, 'Allo 'Allo.
There are a rare few shows that rub me the wrong way or rather, don't rub me any way at all.. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Little Britain, The Young Ones, Bottom.. All shows that I just fail to get, period.
Some shows are sorta trashy but I still enjoyed them, like Two Pints and a Bag of Crisps.
Then there's stuff like Mr Bean, Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Absolutely Fabulous.. Classic and old school that everybody knows by now anyway.
Share your thoughts, favourites, non-favourites or just discuss the Peep Show with me because I am fucking dying here.
Crap, all the British comedies that popped in my head when I read the title, you've already mentioned.
My Family is awesome. The Green Wing is even more awesome.
Green Wing: I've never seen season two, I've heard it's not as good as season one. I'll have to download that somewhere.
Oh hell, I need to get most of the shows you've mentioned in here. I already have Coupling, Blackadder (HA! You haven't mentioned that one), Ali G. and The Green Wing S1.
Well.. I'm off to the newsgroups!

Peep Show is amazing, I've got all four series on my computer! If you like the humour, but wouldn't mind a sketch style show then look up The Mitchel And Webb Situation/Look. Two small sketch series by the guys from Peep Show.
How far have you got through Peep Show at the moment?

YES YES YES. I love it. Can't wait until the American version comes out next year. They're keeping the same actor for Moss so it should still be good.
I watched the entire Black Books series online not too long ago as well. It's damn good. I need to check out the other ones Sanni mentioned later.

Yeah I looked their stuff up on Wiki, will search the ytube later.
I'm not far with Peep Show. Watched S1 clips on youtube and saw one S2 episode on Finnish TV. The torrents were dead so I just went and got the DVDs, should get here by the end of this week. Yay for having moneyz.
So far my favourite was the clips I saw of S1E04... "I'm 85% sure I'm heterosexual." God this show makes me laugh so hard I friggin' can't breathe.
Tijs - Re: Green Wing S2
It's GOOD and especially the latter half of it is priceless but it's not as ..legendary as S1 I guess. The Christmas special ends the series, and I didn't like much about that but I thought it was an appropriately crazy ending all the same.
S2 is good especially in terms a few characters, like Guy and Alan. XDDD
Jebus - Glad you enjoyed Black Books, w00t.

:( It never seems the same when an American version is made, although keeping Moss is cool!
On a related note of US versions, I've watched all of the UK version of Teachers (awesome program) and then watched the US remake, it severely dissapointed me. Do certain shows really need remaking for the US market, or is the humour/context too different between countries such that it needs to be rewritten?

I probably sound like a sissy when I say I'm put off by the crudeness of many of the comedies today. It just always seems desperate that so many try to go after cheap, cringeable laughs that unsettle the viewer. I don't know who set the trend but it seems to be the style of comedies right now. Programmes like Little Britain for example, don't accompany it with the wit used by say, Phoenix Nights (which rulz btw) or The Visit.
Anyway there's my rant, here's my top 5:
*Fawlty Towers
*My Family (despite)
*Anything Monty Python
*The Two Ronnies
*Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights
Also: I saw an episode of The Peter Serafinowicz show on Thursday; really, I liked it a lot.

Does anyone (outside of the UK) watch any of the British satire quiz shows, such as "9 Out Of 10 Cats" and "Have I Got News For You", I find them really funny when there are good guests on.
I know it's not intended as a comedy show, but does anyone else like Top Gear for it's humour? My parents have started watching recently, but they couldn't care squat about fast cars etc, they just enjoy the challenges and funny segments. (If no one has seen this then I recommend downloading the Polar Special and the Winter Olympic Special, also look up the challenges such as making a robin reliant rocket!)

I've only seen the US versions of the Office and Coupling.. The latter was atrocious when "translated" to America, the first is good but has been having ups and downs.
I didn't know they made a US version of Teachers! I love the UK original, though.
I gotta admit the biggest fans of Britcom I know are from the UK or Finland, not many Americans.. Then again Americans also have limited access to British comedy - not many shows get shown, not everybody gets BBC America and they have so much American comedy programming..
It helps when you grow up watching it.

I didn't know they made a US version of Teachers! I love the UK original, though.
They only made one series, and stopped since it didn't get very good viewing figures. Nothing beats the UK version, although it lost it's edge in the fourth series. I've just started to watch it again and I'm halfway through the 1st series, damn I have far too much free time (when in actual fact I have far too much stuff to do!). Also Teachers has the best soundtrack of any sitcom!!
Been a while since I watched Teachers, was actually going to buy it on DVD but like Black Books, never got around to it..
The series 1-4 DVDset is a bit on the pricy side, though. x_X

I fucking love those shows. Along with "mock the week", "never mind the buzzcocks", "QI (to a certain extent)" and my favourite is "the big fat quiz of the year" Although sadly, as the name suggests, its only on once a year.
By the way, did you ever catch a show called "man to man with dean learner" that was fucking hilarious.

Yeah it's about £50-60 ($100-120) over here :s . It's the price of boxsets that drive me to download them (although it always makes for a good xmas/birthday request!).

I'm writing a british comedy. Just because I don't have the resources for anything epic and no, I'm not ever going for "Monty Python epic". Fucking impossible.
ruroken WTF?!
My friend and I watched some of her The Mighty Boosh DVD's at her place today. I loved it but prefer something less random and with an inkling of plot myself. I mean, nothing against it, it's very awesome and everything but just not close to my heart, I guess. I can see why my friend loves it to death, though. :)
Also watched episode one of Spaced. Not hugely impressed but will probably watch more soon.

10-25-2007, 01:50 AM
Spaced is a great show, and I'd also like to add that it's nice to see Green Wing get some recognition, I don't really think there's any decent british comedy still being shown at the minute, but while Green Wing lasted, for me it was definitely the modern example of a great brit comedy.
Oh wait, yeah the Peep Show is awesome. However I hated That Mitchell and Webb Look. I think that's what it's called.
arak0r
10-25-2007, 02:25 AM
if you like cars at all, top gear is great ;) i know it isnt straight up comedy or whatever, but there is quite a bit of comedy involved to be completely honest.
spaced, the office, blackadder are ALL brilliant. then theres father ted, which is irish actually but still hilarious. the other three have been mentioned but not father ted!
mrconeman
10-25-2007, 02:29 AM
Father Ted > every brit comedy. But it's Irish. And I'm biased, alot.
Top Gear is fantastic, the three presenters are great to watch, and I know nothing about, nor have any interest in cars. They're just really entertaining to watch, the one when they went to America and were almost lynched was pretty awesome.
I watched some of the Web & Mitchell Look on youtube last night because I was sick of waiting for my Peep Show DVD's to arrive. It's okay and the episodes I watched had some great gags but I skipped through some lamer proportions altogether. But it involved some of the best parodies of reality television ("Coverage of People Buying a House and Living In It", "Coverage of People Being Ill at a Hospital and Getting Treatment For It" etc) and a hilariously homoerotic snooker commentary.
I'm into sketch shows but we get too many lame ones in Finland.. It's a rare show where they actually know how to make good sketch comedy, or make fucking comedy without it being skits and sketches.
As far as sketch shows go, I prefer some stuff by Harry Enfield and of course, the Fast Show.

ruroken WTF?!
Hahaha yeah, I've been really bored lately. So I decided I would write/(poorly) direct an independant movie and, after thinking about it a lot, I decided british humor would cover my lack of skills by making it seem purposefully shitty.
..but British comedy means comedy done by British people or at least comedy that comes from the United Kingdom. It's not a genre.
Unless you're being all lolololololol British comedy suxxx in which case, go fuck yourself. Twice.
ruroken
10-26-2007, 10:31 AM
No, I'm just being wierd and talking in a british accent. So... I guess its more like "mock-british humor" but I'm not trying to make fun of it. I just thought of Monty Python and the Holy Grail and decided that I would do something like it from lack of a budget.
Sounds like possibly the least funny thing I've ever heard.
ruroken
10-26-2007, 10:40 AM
Yeah, I know. It's an independant movie. Plus I have no experience in this kind of thing. I'm doing it for fun and experience, not for making people laugh.

Thank you for introducing me to my new obsession. Just finished season 2 of Peep show and I'm loving it so far. Sometimes it just hurts too much watching Mark when I keep seeing myself in him. The guy is way too relatable.
As for Dark Place, I started watching it as soon as I found out two actors from IT Crowd are in it. Great show.

Has anyone heard of Monkey Dust?
The best british animated series ever! :p
Monkey Dust was amazing.
Mother: I know what we should call him. How about Jacoby?
Baby: [thinking] What?
Father: That's nice, although I had rather set my heart on Hugo.
Baby: [thinking] Hugo? Hugo?! You fucking twat!
Father: Then again, we could name him after my grandfather, Thursby.
Baby: [thinking] You absolute fucking tosser! They will beat me like a Chipperfield monkey!
Mother: No, I know what's nice.
Baby: [thinking] Dave! Steve! Chris! Steve! Dave! Anything!
Mother: Hercules!
Baby: [thinking] Oh, that's a good idea - if I want to be a fucking gladiator!
Father: The classical touch is nice, but how about Archimedes?
Baby: [thinking] How about "Fucking Gaylord" and be done with it!
Quote taken from Wikipedia.
I wanted to quote that guilty husband who always tells his wife really extravagant lies to cover up his sordid private life. The horrible little things they came up with: "I was spit-roasting a hooker with your dad", and "I was trying to fill a bath with come".
Brilliant.

I don't buy anything. season 3 of Mighty Boosh isn't as good as the other 2, i'm pretty disappointed. My mum bought me the extras for easter but so far Ive only gotten to seeing the 1st ep, I liked it but I love ricky Gervais. My dad like Top Gear but I always forget when it's on... Also I saw one ep of the IT crowd but I also forgot about it. I reeally want to see the office though.

You love Ricky Gervais but haven't seen the Office? Wow. I actually rewatched some of The Office S2 just to spot the guy who plays Garth Marenghi as this dead-pan computer guy in it. Hilarious! I noticed how little patience I had with Brent this time 'round, though, I mostly just skipped to the bits with Tim/Dawn/Gareth and the other office personnel.
IT Crowd is one Britcom I just don't get. I watched a few eps and hardly laughed at all.

My sister does a scarily accurate version of the Christmas special dance from The Office  I think she's seen it way too many times.

I know what you mean. When it first started I wasn't a fan at all, and lasted about 4 episodes into the first series then tuned out.
However, I caughed an episode of series 2 a few months back and laughed heartily. I watched the rest of the series and loved it. I also revisited series 1 and lo and behold, I loved that too! It's odd, but quite a few people have had the same experiences with the IT Crowd; hated it at first but then loved it after a year or so.
I think it's best watching it after watching a few classic episodes of Father Ted and maybe Black Books, as Graham Lineham's brilliant writing talent really does shine through with an effect that it almost guaranteed to leave anyone with smiles beaming from ear to ear.

Watch series 2. Srsly. Plus, Matt Berry (DarkPlace's Dr Sanchez) is in it for the first few ep's. His outrageous characaterisation adds much lolz even if you don't like the show itself.
Has anyone mentioned Nathan Barley yet? It's a brilliant satire of the pretentiousness of modern media culture, written by Charlie Brooker and Chris Morris. It also stars DarkPlace/IT Crowd's Richard Ayoade and Julien Barratt (of Mighty Boosh fame). LOADS of other young British comic actors sprinkled about in there as well.

I adored that first series or two. Everything about it was awesome. I was the only person in my circle of friends who enjoyed it, crazily
My friend got me into Press Gang and I'm fully convinced it's the BESTEST TV EVER.
Not strictly comedy, basically made for kids/teens but SO FUNNY and so GOOD. Written by Steven Moffat, head-writer of Coupling. Made 1989-1993 and the fashion looks like it, but it's just so funny and amazing and full of lovable characters and omfg.

Share your thoughts, favourites, non-favourites or just discuss the Peep Show with me because I am fucking dying here.
two pints is brill lol if you like men behaving badly try 'not going out' and 'game on'
game on is a lil old (probably around same time as men behaving badly) very funny though

i think with bottom you had to be a kid to get it even though there's lots of swearing and sex related comedy
little britain is shit i agree lol
britas empire was kinda funny though
Dearest Mr Andrew,
I apologise for not taking up on your advice earlier. How right you were indeed, and how sadly mistaken I myself was. Glad to have given this show another go, now I am happy to inform you I've seen all episodes of it and while it's not my favouritest thing ever, it is certainly among my Britcom favourites.
With love and uttermost respect,
Vera
PS. I have acquired two tickets to Gay: A Gay Musical should you be interested.

I recently came across a Britcom from about 2000, called "My Family". Although I've only seen the first 3-4 episodes, I think it's pretty great. Anyone like this show?

It is indeed a good one. Probably the most "American"-looking British sitcom although funny unlike many American sitcoms.
Little Britain I maintain is still utter shite.
A Bit of Fry & Laurie is v.v.v.v. good, though.

2 shows that I really love to watch are;
Keeping Up Appearances and My Family.
Unfortunately I don't see either one on TV hardly ever. I did see the end of KUP though a few nights ago. Both shows always make me laugh my ass off.

Wow, that's a surprise. I may have to check out a box set if I continue to like what comes on PBS.

Heh, it reminds me of every single sitcom that American comics come out with, but there's something different about it, yep.

Keeping Up Appearances is one of my favorite shows of all time.

my most favourite kinda new comedy sitcom was called the cup. its basically about parents running a team their kids play in, you really need to watch it to appreciate the humour though!

That's funny, I can't find *anything* about this one online! If you can find youtube clips or something, would be great, as I'm really curious about it.
