Many of you will argiew with me but
I think offspring's darkest punk album is splinter:
Let me explain, splinter have the strongest lyrics offspring have made: the noose, lightning rod, long way home, never gonna find me and race against myself.
I think this album have very deep lyrics.....its very serious shit, it deals alot with depression and suicide directly.
Another thing is muscially, musically we can see many fast ripping punk like the noose, never gonaa find me, lightning rod and long way home.......................but i have to say the song that surprised me more is da hui.........da hui is an extremly energetic punk song....a very underground one.
the other songs like hit that, spare me the details, can't get my head round you are very emotional songs.........hit that is not a joke......it talks of guys who left pregned women.....its the cause of almost all bad matrimonies.

And neocon.......neocon is a damm very good protest song........its all we need.....it doesnt say how shitty are we, and that we live in a fuck and stuff like american idiot for example..........ceocon simply tell us we want pease!
and we wont loose to you(this are very good words)nothing violent, you cant deal with violence causing more.

in conclussion i think this is the most serious record from the offspring.

athough this is my oppinion :)

Great English. :)

ontopic: yeah it's a pretty dark CD, but i think their most dark album is ST or Ignition, just the way it's recorded and the looks of them.

^ I agree with NRK, although more ST than Ignition.

Splinter, no. (MY opinion)

Oh and what's with the '................'?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who realizes that Hit That is not only a great song, but it's more than just a joke. Yes, they use a bit of humor to get their point across, but there's some decent social commentary there.

I think most people dislike Hit That just because they think they're supposed to dislike it, since it resembles Pretty Fly and Original Prankster so much. But it's a really good song.

In my oppinion.....

ST was their darkest,
Ignition was still dark, but some offspring trademark sounds beginning to form.
Then smash came along....nuff said.

I'll rate each of the albums in terms of how dark I think they are.

1. The Offspring- I think this is undisputably the darkest one. Every song deals with a serious issue, war, death, emotion, politics (except Beheaded- a humourous song, but with a special dark and macabre sense of humour) Darkness rating 9/10

2. Ignition- They're in higher spirits this time. Lyrically this is a very serious album. 'Burn it up' has humourous lyrics in part, but still deals with a very real issue. L.A.P.D, No Hero, and Dirty Magic are the darker songs here. Get it right, Session and Nothing from Something are fast energetic songs closer to the trademark songs. Darkness rating- 7/10

3.- Smash- Considered by many to be the best. The songs are more upbeat than Ignition, but lyrically it's just as dark. What happened to you adresses Drugs, So Alone adresses anger and hatred, Genocide (self-explanatory) and Not the one adresses people's 'couldn't care less attitude when there are serious problems). More political than Ignition and some social commentary in 'Come out and Play' Darkness rating-7.5/10

4- Ixnay on the Hombre-
Meaning of life promotes freedom and the liberty to live your life the way you want too, Mota adresses the affects of drugs (serious message, but humourous lyrics) Me and My Old Lady is more social commentary, Cool to hate again social....Leave it Behind is quite a dark song as it refers to grudges that can last decades between enemies. Gone Away adresses death, and loss a very emotional song. I choose is again about freedom and liberty, a high spirited song. All I want is more of the same. Way down the line is political/social song about teenage pregnancy../Pick it up their first real novelty song. Although it has a message about not 'messing around' too much, the other verses render it quite pointless. It is a likeable song, at least.
Amazed is a song about the difficulties we face in life. Finally we hear Change the World. This adresses corruption and people saying one thing and doing another.
Darkness Rating- 7/10

5- Americana- Have you ever- Social again, serious lyrics.
Staring at the sun- An outlook on life
Pretty Fly- This is a novelty song. Not serious in the slightest. You could argue it was a social commentary, but it's not a 'big' problem that the youth aspire to be like their MTV idols.
The Kids aren't alright- Another social song about how people's lives have gone down the drain as they grow up.
Feelings- Cover song
She's got issue- A pop-punky 'relationships' song. Not that serious.
Walla Walla- Serious social commentary about the prison system and it's ineffectivness to reform.
The End of the line- About the sadness of loss
No Brakes- A fun song with no hidden meaning.
Why don't you get a job- Quite light-hearted, not an important song, because of the way the issues tackled. At least it does raise a point though.
Americana- Political- about the way America has turned out today.
Pay the Man- Besides the end of the line, this is the darkest song on America. Quite different, an epic! Thought-provoking lyrics too.

Darkness Rating 5/10

Conspiracy-
Come out Swinging- A high spirited opener. A 'get out there and do it!' anthem. Original Prankster- Novelty song with no hidden meaning.
Want you bad-Relationships, nothing too serious. Million Miles away- A dark song at last, about the emptiness we feel when we're away from a loved one.
Dammit I changed again- I think it's about the changes we and other people go through and the unpredictability of life.
Living in Chaos- Self explanatory but a serious song. Special delivery- Quite a dark song about stalkers/ One Fine Day- Anthemic punk song about riots has a serious undertone too. All Along- About Deception/ Vultures- The Darkest song on the album/ Title track- About how the world has changed from the 'good old days'

Darkness Rating 6.5/10

Splinter

The Noose- Serious social commentary
Long Way home- A personal song
Hit that- Social again, similar to Way down the line lyrically
Race Against Myself- More personal stuff
Can't get my head around you- Relationships and such
Worst hangover- Novelty ska...
Never gonna find me- A metaphorical song about 'the real me'
Lightening rod- About 'the storm of life' could be interrpruted as a song about suicide.
Spare Me the details- Poppy relationship song
Da-Hui- A homage to respected surfers
When you're in prison- A novelty song. One of their better novelty songs.

Darkness Rating 5.5/10

@extraordinarygoodgrocer:
i agree, but 'darkness' is not simply about lyrics, it's about rythms also.

Some of the lyrics of Splinter are dark but the tunes don't seem as dark when compared to the first albums. I have trouble hearing (my ears are fine, brain just doesn't understand em) so I listened to Splinter for ages without quite understanding all of the lyrics and because of the style of music I never thought Splinter was that dark. But when I read the lyric book I was like wow this is actually pretty dark.

Splinter has its dark moments but Ixnay is their darkest by far I think, the earlier ones are more grunge, Ixnay is pure darkness even I Choose is pretty synical IMO

ps. or maybe I just think that because of the black on the cover, who knows :)

personally i think "darkness" of an album is probly is due to 75% music and 25% lyrics. i think this is because the music is the main thing here. most ppl dont buy a band because of the lyrics, the music is the main factor and u can still know an album is good without even knowing the words or paying attention to the meaning of the lyrics. i know the lyrics to offspring songs but it doesnt mean i know the meaning to the songs neccesarily.

if u compare (for example) splinter and self-titled. hit that might have a social family meaning to the song and elders might be about growing up but elders is still like 10x darker and heavier musically than hit that. (hit that is still a good song though). elders is faster harder and less farted up than hit that with keyboards and synthesizers and stuff in my opinion. but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. let there be rock!

i agree splinter is a much darker album than what appears on the surface, but i wouldnt call it a punk album in a long shot, and i also think self titled is a more deeper album. you raise a good point though, lots of people think splinter is just a rubbish album with no depth.

I think splinter isn't the darkest albums... becuz I think it's the album with the most songs about relationships... can't get my head around you, spare me the details, hit that in a certain way... but I loved Lightning Rod that's a pretty dark song...one of the darker songs... but there's still amazed, no hero, kick him when he's down, gone away etc...

ignition i think is their darkest album...it really has a lot of hopelessness in it, nothing from somethign, no hero, etc...the self-titled is dark as well, but i think ignition beats it out...i think the flying around the world will help dexter tap into something new this time around with lyrics at least, and give us all a refreshing feeling inside...and then we will all fall down with laughter.

what i want to see is the offspring at its darkest ever, while tapping into the good old spirit of their HOTTEST albums, around album 2-4, which i would consider to be by far their best. my hope would be for them to keep it good and punk like, not to far to the emo end, not to far to the techno end (splinter seemed kind of techno to me). just go take a look at Bad Religion. they have like 14 albums and they have been around for 24 FUCKING YEARS. i mean holy shit, how many bands are there that are still god (yes i mean god) after almost 25 years now of rocking it out. if the offspring can duplicate this i will personally by someone on this board a trip to see the offpsring live in some exotic country like brazil :D , which will be a while since im still 14 ;)

sorry but you ppl must learn what your feelings about music are drawn from, time is something you cannot compare, ST was probly made on a 20,000 $ budget, compare that to maybe $ 1 million, these days, the general sound factors of that money most ppl are soo naive to think its a fact... i think the producer made the new album darker in " sound " than the lyrics are, nothing anyone says will convince me otherwise, i know its my opinion, however i feel i have a musical sensibility greater than most, when listening to music over 7 albums, you kinda have to allow for factors, yes self titled was darker by far..if it was made in this day, but taken on sound.. Nemesis 89, we embelish the tones based on the newer material, the leveling alone is something i am aware of, i need to turn up the first 2 albums to get the same atmosphere
