dexter dozent smoke anymore
Bravo: You don't like cigarette smoke?
Dexter: I hate it!!! I fight allot about this with the others. Cigarette smoke smells terrible and ruins your vocal cords. I used smoke in high school, but only because it was prohibited. But I got off it years ago.

You've gone from saying "offspring finished next year" to "dexter has quit smoking"
Says it all really.
I cant wait to see what his next topic is about.
"OMG I think Dexter blinked!"
OMG I think I've just send a friendly email to the webmaster about summer_guy.

You sound shocked, did you start smoking because of you thought Dexter would do it too? I knew it!
For someone so annoying, he makes me laugh a lot....
Sometimes he cracks me up too, he has a nice way to express himself.

"he s not like hot but he is cool dude i wanna meet him too but i thaink i cant maybe i think he has a security"

He doesn't smoke. But he smoked a cigarr at Intermission. You can see that in the Rockpalats concert.

The story about the chick who wrote Harry Potter is fucking awesome. She was a straight C student and she gave horrible speeches to her Alma Mader and shit, but anyway, she is obviously a cool chick and she has her degree in Classics. A Classics degree is always a sign of good charachter, hence the Latin. Latin is the best degree in the world, Cura Ut Valeas.

Hail! Fellow Classics lover! :D

Well i'm still at school - doing A levels in Greek, Latin, Classical Civilization, and physics :D
I feel deeply privileged; esp because my teacher is damn hot! :p No, that's not the reason i like classics though!
What about you?

You can go ahead and expect every Classics lover that you meet to be gorgeous. At least that is my experience here at USC. Goddamn Classics boys are hot. I am a Latin lover myself and going to learn Greek soon. That is awesome that you are learning these languages early. Physics is a bummer though, i know because I am taking it this semester. Not my favorite so far. When you get to the University level everything gets more fun. My class this semtester is entitled Latin Erotic Elegy. What is not to like? Enjoy for sure. I hope your teahers are teaching you the history behind the language.

Yeah, classical civilization is about ancient life - i had an exam on Aeschylus and Sophocles on Friday in it, and Herodotus and Thucydides then greek art and architecture exams in the summer!
Latin Erotic Elegy - sounds fun! :D
Where's USC? I live in England, so i want to go to Cambridge (naturally)

USC is the University of Souther California...the best school in the US of course. But it sounds like you are learning a lot of cool stuff...mostly Greek. The only Greek I learn is when I am translating Latin and I am forced to conjugate or decline Greek words, which thorougly confuses me. I'm partial to Romans myself.
Cambridge is an amazing college. My biochem professor did his sabatical there with Francis Crick which is the coolest thing in the world. My Latin II prof actually got accepted there and he chose to go to USC instead beacuse we have the best ancient sexuality professor in the world. Amy Richlan. Check her out. I am prould to see an intelligent person with your ambitions.

Wow thanks - i'm amazed to find a fellow classicist on here! :D
I think i probably prefer the Greeks - i love their tragic and comic plays, although i did more of the Romans for GCSE; like the colosseum and pompeii in class civ.
Cambridge is amazing, i'm revising for exams so much because i have to get amazing grades to get in :(
Ah my teacher isn't quite as cool; he went to oxford and wrote a book about Pompeii, which he then managed to convince the school to buy a load of copies of as it would be useful to students!

You should come to USC. Richlin does plays in class with students and writes plenty of books. She translated some play in the original meter. It is amazing. I think the only time a book is published in English in it's original meter. I wouldn't be surprised if you have read it. Cambridge is old and crusty. USC is young and fun. And you may prefer the Greeks but that's because you don't know enough about the Romans yet. :) Latin is always better than Greek. There is so much you could discuss dealing with Classics. It's too fun.

Ah yes, Cambridge is 'old and crusty' and full of toffs - i know :D
I'd love to go to an American university and i was thinking of looking into it because i probably won't get into Cambridge and US universities seem very cool.
I do prefer the Greeks at the moment but i do know a fair amount about the Romans - not a lot though, i must admit. :) Next year in class civ (my last yr) at school, i'll be studying more Romans than Greeks - like comparing the Roman historians with the Greek ones I’m doing now, and also some of their literature.
I'm actually going to Greek summer school this summer, we act out plays there in the original language and although it sounds extremely sad; it's very cool.

No!!! That doesn't sound sad at all. I would be taking Greek this summer as well. The intensive Greek course at UCLA with my Latin II prof. He is hot. But he is also one of the best teachers I have ever had in my life. So props to Greek. I hope your Ancient Mediterannean Civ class is fun, especially if it focuses on the Romans at all. They are wonderful. If you don't get around to it, read Petronius, Satyricon for fun. And apply to the US colleges for sure. Expecially to the priveate schools (like USC). You have a better chance of getting accepted with private. Good luck buddy!

Yeah i'lll probably apply but i'd choose cambridge over them all if i got accepted because it'd be so much more convienient.
Yeah i go to a private school at the mo. which is how i can even do latin and greek - regular schools don't do them! I haven't read Petronius or Satyricon but i'll look into them - i just started Caesar's the conquest of Gaul, seems cool.
Yeah, next year i get the Romans, we'll see which i perfer then. :p
"buddy" - ah, cute american word! :D Brits never use it!

lol Well Petronius would be the author...Aribeter Elegentiae if I remember correctly which basically translates to the Cool Bastard. He was the guy who if the Emperor was like, "hey isn't this cool?" He would be like, "Yeah that's great, but what would be even cooler is if you did this." So he is a great author. The Satyricon means like "Satire" as you would guess so it is basically the coolest Latin Author writing a satire, pretty much about a guy in search of his erectoin. Very funny. Always a good combination.
I read Caesar, On the conquest of Gual for Latin II. It was AWESOME! I loved Caesar. Appreicate it, whoever makes you read it early is very knowledgeable. It can always get worse with Cicero as you will see. Caesar is one of my favorite writers he is so straight-forward and traditional. I love it.

Ah ok, you can tell i haven't heard of Petronius' Satyricon - i thought it was 2 different people! I'll have to check that out, sounds excellent - i love all the stories about what crazy Romans did to each other :D
No one made me read it, i just saw it in the classics libarary at school and thought it might be fun. :)
Is that: Gaul is all seen in part 3? I'm really none too sure....
Dead Cheerleader
01-16-2005, 07:17 AM
That is really close!! It means "All of Gaul is divided into three parts." A lot of people historically mess it up and say "every man in Gaul has three fathers" but that is good that you caught the correct form of partes. I also LOVE the crazy stories about Romans. I am convinced that Prof Richlan has more of those stories than anyone in the world, which is why everyone loves her. You know that Catullus where he says "Pedicabo ego vos et irrumabo." Well her professors at Yale told her that was just a metaphore and that people didn't really use to do that. Yeah well they did and she was the one who basically showed all of that. She has the credit for the Oxford Encyclopedia entry on "sex" and that isn't trivial. Satyricon is hilarious and a lot of Classics people hold it in their top few favorite works.

Wicked, so it's your favourite work? Mine is probably either Euripides' Bacchae or Aristophanes' Frogs. Two totally different plays, i know. :D I'm trying to read a bit more than just Greek plays now, i know most of them so i want to expand knowledge. I've got Ovid's Metamorphoses which seemed interesting when I flicked through it.
Your professor sounds awesome, btw! Maybe as cool as mine?!
