I recently, finally, listend to The String Quartet Tribute to The Offspring. I know it's been out for a while but I've only come across it a couple days ago. And WOW, when you hear some of those songs being played by an orchestra, you really notice the power of the melodies. Very soothing and entertaining to listen to.
This got me thinking. A quick search on Youtube and you can find Metallica playing Nothing Else Matters with a whole orchestra, and it really worked well.
I would love to see The Offspring play live with an orchestra.
For those of you who have listend to The String Quartet Tribute, I think you can agree with me on The Kids Aren't Alright, Gone Away and All I Want being the best songs to play with an orchestra. TKAA is simply beautiful. Almost brings tears to the eyes. Gone Away and All I Want are very entertaining.
Anyway, it would be epic to see The Offs playing live with an orchestra.
Maybe one day we'll have the chance

Scorpions also played with a whole ochestra :)
So did Guns 'n Roses, so did Aerosmith, so did Brian Setzer, so did Kaiser Chiefs, so did U2, so did a million of other bands.
But orchestra? A string quartet is just 4 people, right?
I don't know, it would be cool but on the other hand it wouldn't that original. I would find it a lot cooler if they just got an actual string quartet to perform with them instead of an entire orchestra.

bad idea! I wanna see them live with 100% original gypsy band
To be honest, i was just drinking wine and the tributes sounded incredible. So why not, add Dexter's vocals and it would be even more amazing.

I love when bands play with full orchestras, but there are a couple reasons it wouldn't be a good idea with the Offspring:
1) most bands that do this have string parts in their songs on the album versions (for instance, Nothing Else Matters has strings in the original version). Offspring doesn't, so someone would have to sit down and write entire string parts for every song.
2) even if someone was going to write string parts for all the live songs, it'd be really hard to get an orchestra that wanted to do it. Offspring songs are generally very basic and simple that work because they are punk/rock songs. String parts would also end up having to be very basic and simple, and an orchestra would almost certainly not be interested in playing a show like that.
Tijs, I'm pretty sure that Kaiser Chiefs only played with a ukelele "orchestra", not a real one. To do one song live with an orchestra in fairly common, but to do an entire concert with an orchestra like Metallica did is pretty rare. I think it's really great to do, but only if a band has string parts in their music already and if it's slightly more complex of music. Some of the Offspring's newest songs off rfrg could possibly be expanded upon to be good with an orchestra, though.

You make a good point. I also agree that The Offspring playing a full concert with an orchestra wouldn't work, unless they pick special songs.
But what I imagined was this. The orchestra could play TKAA just as they did in their version, and The Offspring could come in playing during the solo or the final chorus. For example, when Dex played Gone Away on the piano. There was a performance where he played most of the song by himself, and the rest of the band came in later. I think that would work really well with TKAA. Dexter could even sing by himself with the strings, in a much calmer voice.
All I Want could be played just as The String Quartet played it but with Offspring guitars and vocals on top.
Imagine Fix You, Kristy, Gone Away being altered slightly to have strings. That would be epic.

Ah, so fyi, there's a HUGE difference between an orchestra and a string quartet... you don't want the Offspring to play with an orchestra, you want them to play with the string quartet that covered them. This is a very, very different idea, and I think it's interesting. Unfortunately, the quartet would probably not do this because they are just a group of 4 guys who try to make money off of covering various artists... they go for whatever is most popular. Since the Offspring is longer huge, they wouldn't make much money by appearing at a show to play a couple songs... so I'm pretty sure they wouldn't do it. But again, I like the idea. It'd be cool to have the Offspring actually perform a few songs with a quartet.

I know the difference between a quartet and a full orchestra. It's just the idea of the band playing with strings and timpani that I wanted to point out :)
It would be awesome either way, with the right songs, that is.

Only if there will be an organ. And it will happen in a cathedral.
