Sure Dave is better player than Kurt but Kurt is a better compositor and he is so charismatic (I'm not sure this word exist!).

no, drugs did affect morrison and hendrix, but they WERENT SHOOTING UP HEROIN, and they werent addicted in the sense that the drug ruled there life. cobain lived on the streets, before he hit fame with nirvana he was already on a downward spiral of addiction and depression. its just wrong that cobain is painted as a hero. he should be remembered for his brutal yet honest music. his whole life was a tradgedy.

To get on the original topic, Pearl Jam is a million times more talented than Nirvana. Pearl Jam incorporated so many different styles into their sound ranging from blues, grunge, punk, folk, country, metal, and a few others. Eddie Vedder's voice has more range than Kurt's ever did, and his lyrics are better too.

Nirvana basically played by-the-numbers grunge without any deviation from the formula and anything interesting or new. The reason they were the most accessable band of that era is because they were the easiest band of that era. There was nothing too abrasive that would turn off simple-minded music fans, and there was nothing experimental that would turn off their original fanbase.

I think it's funny that, at a time, Nirvana was so incredibly overrated that now they're actually underrated. I used to be on the "ZOMG NIRVANA RAWR SUCKS" bandwagon. I still wouldn't call myself a fan, as the songs I listed are the only ones I still like, but I don't really hate them anymore.

I think Dave is a good drummer, to be honest. His stuff isn't amazingly technical, but when I've heard friends play Nirvana drum parts without the rest of the song, and I can actually say "hey, that's *insert song*" because the drum part is so specific to that song. I have to say that's a good thing, rather than doing interchangable yet technical parts.

One of my favorites is when I read Rolling Stone's updated review of Bleach, which they had to update after Kurt died because they originally said that it was a shitty album. They gave an in-depth discussion about the meaning of "School", despite the fact that Kurt admitted in early interviews that lyrics from the first album really ment nothing at all and he just strung together random stuff because "songs had to have lyrics".

From the reading I've done (I used to be an obsessive Nirvana fan, so I've read a lot about them) it started out as the press's fault, then Kurt started to believe his own hype, then change his story and start agreeing with what the press said about him while at the same time criticizing them to keep up his indie cred.
