I've never heard any of their music, but I saw them in the movie, "Back To School". What kind of music do the play?

wow, its hard to describe them in a couple words. they formed in the 70s, played through the 80s, so they have some of that 80's sound, mixed with rock, mixed with country, mixed with punk, mixed with, geez everything. the way i explained them prolly makes them sound like crap, but trust me, its good stuff.
I like them when they play stuff other than New Wave. Even when they play New Wave it's better than when most people do.

Ah, so there is a Boingo thread here. Cool.
I've been listening to these guys a lot lately. Elfman was quite the faggy-lookin' frontman, but they're such an amazing band.

haha i forgot i even made this thread!
the band still plays (sans elfman) every once in a while. Under the moniker "Johnny Vatos and friends"...or something like that.
I heard they found a guy who sounds just like Elfman, but i think i would rather them get a guy who does his own interpretation, then a wanna- be carbon copy.

agreed! a magazine ( i think it was maxim) had them listed as "one of the worst bands of all time". which blew my mind.
they were grouped as part of the new-wave bands, but they did things musically that no other "new wave" band did.
plus the band spawned one of the most popular, and sought after, movie composers.

LOOOOOOOVE Boingo. As weird as Elfman is, he has an amazing pop sensibility.

Not to mention a goddamn incredible voice.
But agreed, they can be a little, err, weird. "Little Girls" probably being the highlight of their "what-the-fuck? eww" factor.
I didn't even realize this thread was bumped so recently. I just got Boingo Alive on Saturday and have been listening to it pretty much non-stop since. I've never really been a fan of these guys (though I've tried a few times). I had gotten a couple of their albums before and only ever really liked a handful of songs. Then I heard the version of "Who do you Want to Be" from this album which was about a billion times better than the original album version and nearly every other song on here is the same way. The live-in-the-studio thing works really well for them and a lot of the songs I had previously disliked are pwning my ass on this album. The only one I can think of where I prefer the original is Goodbye, Goodbye despite the fact that this one has better sound.

Here's some of the other songs I really like off there:

Tim Burton's a fucking tool, but Elfman's scores for his movies are usually pretty great.
Elfman hasn't written anything exceptional in a while now (his recent movie compositions are pretty lame and derivative, Spider-man for example), but back in the day he was the absolute shit. :)
"Insanity", "No Spill Blood", "Gratitude". I can't get over how fucking amazing and fresh those songs sound, even now 20 years later.

Fun fact: Danny Elfman is the genius who composed the Simpsons' theme.
As far as Oingo Boingo, they're not really my thing, but I do think they're a good band.

I don't think there's ever been a more appropriate moment for that stupid "Duh!" expression. ^
He did the old Batman theme too, along with just about every Tim Burton movie and a bunch of others.

Oh man, you guys. One of my favorite online comics just introduced me to the farewell concert version of "We Close Our Eyes," and I'm a little fucked up over it right now:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11jY0v5t1WM
From the final show at the Universal Amphitheater. This is the only song I've listened to all day, except for a few minutes when I had a friend in the car and she couldn't handle the same song OVER and OVER. I get crushes on songs, and this one is a doozy.
That is a great song. The version I have on Boingo Alive is very close to the version in your link.

Ah, so now I have to get that one too? :) tx
EDIT: just heard the clip on iTunes. It's a lot closer to the original with the drumming and all. I love the original song but I love the stripped-down one more. Though can you really call anything played with a zillion piece band "stripped-down"?
Also, I'd like to point out that Warren Fitzgerald is playing guitar in the farewell show.
I've never heard the original studio version of it, but the sample on amazon makes it sound WAY 80s compared to the one I have. The drums are a bit more subdued now that you point it out, and I can't hear the xylophone/keyboard part either. You know, I think they do a close-up of everyone except Warren in that video.

i just thought i'd quote this, as I cannot stop listening to "Insanity" right now, nor can I stop watching the Farewell Concert video of when they opened with it, nor can I stop wondering to myself how much I would do Danny Elfman given the chance.
"Stay" is also the tits.

i love how when they do "No Spill Blood" at the last show, Danny Elfman beats the crap out of Warren Fitzgerald. And he never stops playing
ps--i'd do the snot out of danny elfman.
