Well, up until an hour ago, I liked Audioslave. While not perfect, I thought they were one of the few active rock bands with balls who didn't make generic, radio-friendly crap. I liked several of the songs on their debut, and was looking forward to their sophomore album coming out this June.
And then I heard their new song on the radio, "Be Yourself"
OK, let's start with the title. "Be Yourself"??? What is this, first grade all over again? I don't know what the hell Cornell is thinking, but I don't think his target audience needs to be told how special and unique they are.
And regarding the song itself...well, granted, I only heard the last 1/4 or so, but what I heard shocked, revolted and disappointed me all at once. It sounded like some U2-esque, upbeat, generic, sappy pop-rock. I was blown away. What the hell is going on? Is no band safe from selling out nowadays? Is Chris Cornell musically castrating the former members of Rage Against the Machine? I gotta tell ya, I am seriously bummed. It sounds like Audioslave is going down the crapper, fast. And that sucks, because they were one of the few remaining rock groups I considered good.
Hopefully, I'm wrong. It's possible that the song is not wholly representative of their new album. If that's the case, maybe there's still hope and the band simply picked a bad song for a first single. If it isn't, well, I will definitely not be buying the disc. I dunno what Tom Morello is smoking, but if "Be Yourself" is what he considers a "ridiculously rocking" song (that's how he described their new record), something has gone horribly, horribly wrong.
Man..........
