I don't like them. They don't necessarily suck but they're simply not my type of music. I hate the vocalist's voice and they are too depressing. They are ruining today's youth.

They are pretty good. Jade is a pretty badass guitar player and Davey can sing some of the catchiest shit you've ever heard.

Dexter doesn't has that much to do with nitro records.
on-topic: Their older "hardcore" stuff is way better than their new emo kind of style.
I agree with BuddyHolly, but I do like their new stuff aswell.

I like both. Very different styles. Some really high quality AFI in my opinion would be The All Hallow's EP. Sure, it's just an EP, but those songs are pretty classic.
It is kinda sad that their best work included only 4 songs on an E.P. but what did you expect?
AFI is meh, but there is a lot of better stuff out there.

Black Sails In The Sunset was their best, and Art Of Drowning seems to be their peak, but it's too early too tell.
The Boy Who Destroyed The World is a great song, and All Hallows EP is aweosme, but far from their best.
I'm one of he few who like/love Sing The Sorrow. I just hate the image change that came with it, because it's fucking pathetic.

I don't like their first albums so much. I have them and almost never listen to them. They are not bad, there's just nothing special to them. My favorite CD (you probably guessed it) is Black Sails. The EP was pretty good too. Sing The Sorrow was okay, but the problem is that some of the songs are the worst they have ever made and others are really good. So everytime I listen this album, I skip a lot of songs.

Very Proud of Ya was kinda shitty, but had some absolute classics. That was my first AFI album and I got it a LOOOOOOONG time ago (1998), so it holds some sentimental value for me. "He Who Laughs Last", "Wake Up Call", and "Perfect Fit" are perfect songs. Oh, and "Theory Of Revolution".
Shut Your Mouth And Open Your Eyes was weak as hell, but again, some of my favorites are on there. "A Single Second" is wonderful, and "The New Patron Saints and Angels" is my favorite love song ever.

im not sure about this, i heard the rumour but havent heard anything else about it, surely they wouldnt have just taken it lying down and let dexter get on with it?!

^They put an official statement about it on their website, bitching about the fact that Nitro did that, when they should be happy that anyone is even interested in their old albums. It's not like they've accomplished so much that people were dying for a box set, so they should have been proud, not bitchy.
The message they put on their website was really pretentious too. Something like "we're not living in the past! we're paying attention to the future!". So cliche.
Hmm, AFI crying over a petty thing like that, even though they're fully aware that DEXTER AND NITRO RECORDS HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO WHATEVER THEY WANT WITH MATERIAL RELEASED ON THEIR RECORD LABEL...AFI crying over something? I'm shocked!

Shut Your Mouth sucks pretty bad (too hardcore in my opinion) but I LOVE LOVE LOVE "A Single Second"... even though it's pretty hardcore in itself.
I really like both "Very Proud of Ya" and "Answer that and Stay Fashionable"... fun listens and a few really good songs. Like "Perfect Fit" as you mentionned... SO good.
I find Black Sails kinda weird... it's not one of my favourites... but a few of the songs I really like. #5 and #8 in particular I believe. I can never remember the names of their songs... Art of Drowning is possibly my favourite albums by them. And Sing the Sorrow... I don't know... it's good... I just never fell in love with it. No songs particularly stuck.

Personally, I find their first two albums to be nearly worthless. I just don't like them.
Shut Your Mouth... was when they started developing a darker sound, and it's a better quality album.
Black Sails in the Sunset truly defined their direction. And I honestly think it's gotten better ever since. Their most recent album I own by the is Sing the Sorrows, and it is definitely their best.

I like Black Sails and Art of Drowning the best... but my favorite songs are random.. they include Girl's got Gray, The Days of the Pheonix, and Totalimmortal.

i much rather prefer there old stuff. i think sing the sorrow is over produced and just gay. Black sails in the sunset is my fav album by them.

I like both the newer and older music from AFI. The older, more Punk rock kinda stuff is nice to listen to every now and then, but I do prefer Black sails, Art of Drowning, and Sing The sorrow. Answer That and Stay Fashionable was pretty much straight up punk rock. Very Proud of Ya was the same with a slight dark twist. Shut you Mouth was when Davey started writing deeper lyrics, but it still had that hardcore sound to it, same thing with the AFI E.P., Black Sails is truely a master piece of AFI's later work, All hallow's E.P. had the sound of Black sails, but was only an E.P., Art of Drowning was almost as good as Black sails, but still a great example of AFI's deeper side, Sing the Sorrow was good, and would have definitely been better if it wasn't so over produced.
Wow, I wrote a little review for every AFI album. IMO, I think Black sails was Their best. But for their earlier stuff, I'd recommend Answer That, and Shut your mouth.

Each AFI album has its own unique sound. As the band has evolved each album reflects that. Answer That has a lot of "jokey" songs, primarily because Davey was too scared to open up and write more personal material. Shut Your Mouth marks the point when Davey really beings to open up to the listener. Black Sails is the biggest turning point, as the band's sound becomes darker and more melodic and Davey is finally comfortable with writing from within. Sing the Sorrow is definitely the most "layered" album, incorporating a lot of new sounds and elements into their style.
Even though the sound and lyrical content have changed over the last 10 years, an AFI melody is still very unique.
