Okay, this is going to sound really stupid; what age is a 12th grader? and what grade do grades go up to? and start at?
I'm English, please forgive me, i have never figured this out. :D
12th graders are 18, grades start at kindergarden (basicaly grade 0), they stop at 12th grade (we stop using grades at the end of highschool). You are forgiven my english friend.

well theyre just actors.. they arent going to depend on a bunch of people that are actually 15-18 for their big budget movies that arent supposed to be half assed disney comedies :p

A lot of the shit they do in our highschool movies would be illegal to have people under 20 or 21 do, so they have to use older, but still young people.

Up until a couple years ago we had grade 13 (OAC) in Ontario. So I did my grade 13, and was 18 when I graduated. But most of my classmates were 19.
That system is changed too because it was not efficient education wise, etc.

This usually doesn't apply to most people:
Kindergarten (Canada): I was 3
Sixth grade (U.S.A.): I was 10
12th grade (Still in 12th grade): I was 16, now i'm 17.
The only girl younger than me in the 9th grade was 13, the same age as me when I first got in tha grade, but had her birthday a few months later.

So, in Nebraska, a 12th grader's age is 18 and our school system goes like this:
elementary: kindergarden, through 6
Junior High(middle school):7-8
High School: 9-12
and our Grades go like this:
A or we call our A a 1
B our B a 2
C our C a 3
D our D a 4
F and our F a 5
Of course, if you get a 5 in any of the subjects for the final term you fail and have to go through that grade again

Aw. I thought you were going to write about grades in the testing sense.
It's always fun to see NiG write about American intelligence.
I use the word "fun" rather loosely, of course.

The grade system could actually vary from school to school. By that i mean the whole elementary/middle/high thing. I knew someone who's middle school started in 5th, and another who's started at 7th. I think starting middle school should start at 5th grade, so each section has 4 grades.

i dont know why but i didnt think americans had a middle school!
it's so different here..
Kindergarten; 4-5 & 5-6. (first grade & second grade)
Elementary School; 6-7, 7-8, 8-9, 9-10, 10-11, 11-12. (third grade to eighth [?] grade)
High School, MBO; (first grade to fourth grade) 12-13, 13-14, 14-15, 15-16.
High School, HBO; (first grade to fifth grade) 12-13, 13-14, 14-15, 15-16, 16-17.
High School, VWO; (first grade to sixth grade) 12-13, 13-14, 14-15, 15-16, 16-17, 17-18.
don't you have different levels of high school over there? (besides grammar school, of course) or does everyone just.. do the same & then get a dimploma?
Edit: for everyone who's Dutch; I know I left out the VBO-ers. how many years are they in high school anyway? four? but.. who cares.

No, not all Americans have a middle school. Some have an extended elementary and high school. My school system in Pennsylvania does not have a middle school. We have two buildings, one containing K-6 and the other containing 7-12.

sort of; everyone does reception (kindergarden) at 5 years old. Then we have years 1-11, after that people do GCSEs (very easy exams). THen a load of people leave school (at 16), but they could stay and do years 12+13 (lower and upper six) then get A levels. Then uni.

As you may know we have that in Belgium too (since we're all so close, so cosy!), after elementary school we chose which level we're gonna do. The people who aren't that intelligent (don't mean that in a degrading way) or the more "handy" people chose the more professional levels (lots of different levels and professions) while us smartypants do the academic levels (also lots of different levels). I did science-maths with 7 hours of science and 8 hours of maths + the usual subjects like languages, history, geography etc.
This however doesn't change the grade system. The only difference is ofcourse that people who do the more professional levels can work part time after te 4th grade in high school and only go to school 2 days a week (I believe, could be 2 days one week and 3 the other). They can also basically work after they finish high school, while us academic kids have to do college or university if we don't want a standard office or administrative job.
And ofcourse the grades don't really correspont exactly to the age since a school year runs from the 1st of september till the 30th of june (like almost everywhere in the West), but everyone just says it like that over here. First year of high school -> 13 (although I was 12 since my birthday is in july...).

or they could do GNVQs instead of GCSE or A level, mmh, learning how to be a builder.

nah antwerp, but what i mean is in the first year of high school from september till december you're in the year your normally 12 years old (if you didn't double or skipped), but from jan-june which is a longer period you're in the year you turn 13. I look at it like that and so does the government in the last year of high school because otherwise the studyduty (leerplicht) till 18 would be fucked up for people who turn 18 in july-december since what would they do if they didn't continue studying? Do the first months of the last year of high school again? Would be stupid and pointless.
Anyway details details....
