Default Artist of the Month, November '09: DaPantz!

Intro - I've been interested in creating all kinds of music my entire life, but I'd never had access to the kind of training or resources that would put me in a position to do so. But chip music is really accessible and has a real DIY culture around it; if you have access to the same tools you use for other shit (e-mail, video games, work), you can put together some sort of chip music set up that will allow you to make some stuff.

That's my little spiel.

To be more straightforward in this introduction, I'll just say that I've been making general electronic music under the moniker DaPantz since 2006, and chip music on the Nintendo Game Boy since 2008.

Musical Style - Hard to say. I once described my music to a colleague as equal parts salsa and merengue music from the Dominican Republic, American hip-hop (mostly East Coast NYC stuff), 80s and 00s synthpop, and, yeah, some skate punk all vying for attention in my music (which explains why half my songs make no fuckin' sense).

Musical Background/influences/etc - I think most other established chip musicians have a great impact on the stuff I've been doing lately (Nullsleep, Divag, minusbaby, IAYD, Kris Keyser), but to be more broad and historic, my influences have mostly been Depeche Mode, Legowelt, Pet Shop Boys, The Human League, etc. Not much of that good electronic stuff ever made its way over to the United States before the Internet age, so I ended up being influenced by whatever I could; fortunately, that also ended up being some solid stuff.

As far as background goes, I don't really have any. Zero musical training. What you hear is mostly trial and error. I commit to memory the stuff that works well and try to build on it in the future.

Congratulations!
Finally an award that worships TECHNO music!!!

...
Just kidding! You really deserve this award since you not only cared about your thread but have also been busy in Your Band and thus contributed a lot to our community
My favorite song of yours is the one you submitted for the first BBS Mixtape (Nightlife).

I've liked Ricky's music for quite a long time and I was surprised he had never been an Artist of the Month. He deserves it. Although my appreciation comes mainly from me being an 8-bit games maniac. Go Ricky, go!
